Clearing your headlights

So i wanna give my 2014 silverado a more custom look by removing the orange reflectors inside the headlights, what steps are involved in order to remove them? all replies appreciated

Well it looks like all one piece like the previous body style and the only way I know of is taking the headlight assembly out and cutting the amber reflective pieces out. What you would replace it with I don't know.

Luckily for my personal taste the amber corner lights and reflectors doesn't look awful like they did on my 98 so I'm not to worried. If anything just buy aftermarket headlights or something.

Not trying to convince anyone one way or another on this, it's strictly for the benefit of the guy that wants to stay within the lines and may not know, but it's a federal vehicle requirement to have DOT approved amber reflectors on the front as viewed from the sides. As you were....

From what I understand is that it's legal as long as you use amber color bulbs. My 98 had the clear corners and used amber bulbs and never once had a cop say anything about it. I even think a lot of new cars come out with the clear lenses and amber bulbs.

So as long as he changes those bulbs with amber color bulbs he will be fine. Maybe some states like Cali are different and may be anal about it, but as far as I know it's fine to have amber bulbs with clean lenses.

yea on my 96 i had my orange corner lights blacked out for years and never had issues with the law but like southernsilveradoguy85 said if i removed the reflectors & run a amber colored bulb i think ill be fine.

I don't believe that is correct from what I have read on the feds website for the regs. I think the amber bulb thing is web myth.

Here you go.

Web myth? My 98 Silverado came with clear corner lenses and the lowers had amber bulbs (got it used). The old uppers didn't even have reflectors and when I replaced them I got a set with uppers that had small amber reflectors. Never had a problem with cops with either set. Also never had a problem during the annual state inspections. I had the truck for 10 years so there was plenty of time for someone to say something to me about it. I'm also not the only one that had a vehicle with clear lenses and amber bulbs. Some vehicle don't even have a reflector, the bulb can just be seen on the front and side. My ex boss has an Expedition with clean lenses and amber bulbs and he's had that thing for years also without any problems.

In 1998 the FMVSS were a lot different than today. What one cop or most cops do or don't do, doesn't make something legal or illegal. Most cops don't mess with vehicles that have the tail lights dark tinted either. But it's about as illegal as any mod can be and if I ever run into the back of someone that has tinted tail lights, I'm going to play that card.

I just want our members to be informed so they can make their decision with this FMVSS information. The link takes you directly to the 573.108 FMVSS for this subject. I think everyone can understand it. Our membership is made up of people from all walks of life and age groups. Some of them may actually be more inclined to be informed than others. YMMV.

This wasn't in 98, I had my 98 from early 2004 until earlier this year. I've also been on long trips with it. I understand cops not doing anything doesn't exactly make it legal, but it's one of those things that won't really be enforced as long as you at least use an amber bulb. I also understand you wanting to make sure nothing illegal is done, but my point is that people do it all the time and nothing is done so it's not really a big deal. Just use an amber bulb and it's solved. You're basically making a bigger deal out of it than it really is. I know people need to be able to see them, which just using an amber bulb will do just fine since you can still see it fine. Tinting lenses front or rear is a different story, I wouldn't do it, not even for looks.

I just provided factual information. I think it's OK that you don't agree with it or don't think it's factual or don't think it's enforced. It's just information. Just sharing.

I didn't say I thought it wasn't facts or that it's untrue, I looked at the link. I'm just saying I'm talking more real world where it's not really a big deal as long as you still use an amber bulb. It's what I've always read and heard and as I said, I had my 98 with clear corners and amber bulbs the whole time I had it which was 10 years. I've also seen many others that have clear corners and nobody bothers them. Now if someone had clear lenses and white bulbs then to me that wouldn't be legal since it needs to somehow admit an amber color for a turn signal. Maybe I took it the wrong way and you're not making a big deal out of it and if that's the case then my bad. I guess when you said it's a "web myth" made it seems like you've never seen anybody with clear corners when I have all the time including myself so I thought I'd have to give some insight on the subject..

There are all kinds of things we do to our trucks on this site that alter them outside of the FMVSS or other local regs. In CA, most exhaust systems that make more than 95db (per SAE test) are not legal, but it's done everyday. I have headlights that aren't compliant with FMVSS and driving lights that aren't legal in my state. I'm not pure as the driven snow, myself.

The window tint threads discuss the legalities openly. Just doing the same here. It's good to have an informed membership, don't you think?

    • I've been eyeing an upgrade to my tonneau cover for a bit now.  Intrigued by the BAK MX4 EZ-Lift with the torsion spring and went for the upgrade.  Thoughts and musings during unpacking, install and a few days of usage.   Once my order went into Realtruck, it took about 4 days to ship.  Unfortunately, FedEx Ground destroyed the box and contents and it was unusable upon receipt.  To Realtruck's credit, one email with pictures and an RMA was sent to me to send the first one back, and another unit was shipped out.  It arrived 3 days later, unscathed.   I opened the box and it looked like every other BAK MX4.   Biggest differences are the rails and retaining clamps, and of course the spring attached to the cover itself.     NOTE - if you are upgrading from a MX4 to the EZ-Lift, you will have to replace the rails.  The EZ-Lift rails have a notch cut in them to allow the new style retaining clamps to fit properly.  The new retaining clamps also have 2 knobs/carriage bolts and there are two tracks underneath the front panel. The strap clips are mildly different (more like the Undercover Flex clamps) in that the screws go in from the underside.  Personally I prefer these over the BAK clamps that use the nutserts that are a nuisance to install.  The remainder of the parts in the box (drain tubes, rail clamps, and bumper pads) are standard issue BAK.     I did not replace my front bed seal at the time because it seemed to be in decent shape.   BAK recommends shims on the GM trucks unless you place the clamps on the flanges about 1/3 of the way in from both the front and rear of the bed.  I shimmed the front and the middle, and initially placed the clamps equidistant.  This also turned out to be a mistake, because when I set the cover in place, the new style retaining clamps wouldn't clear the front clamp.   New style clamp inserted in the track:     And the issue which occurred because the front rail clamp was too far forward:     Once I removed the shim from the front of the bed, and slid the clamp back to the front flange, everything cleared fine.     The cover set on the rails without issue and I installed the strap clamps.  After I completed my adjustments, I pulled the pin to activate the torsion spring.  Mistake #3 on my part.  PULL THE PIN AS THE VERY VERY VERY LAST STEP!  The reason is, once you pull the pin, the torsion spring is activated.  If you have to loosen the front clamps and adjust the cover, the front panel will - by virtue of the spring, refuse to lay down.  The only way to get it to lay down so you can reinstall and tighten the clamps is to fully open the panel against the back of the cab, which will then allow the front panel of the cover to lay down and be tightened.  Not a big deal unless you haven't installed the foam pads yet (typically the last step) because minus the foam pads, you will need to place something between the frame of the cover and the back window so it doesn't get scratched.  The next time I install one I will install the foam pads before I pull the pin and activate the spring.   After using it for a few days:   The spring assist is great.  You literally can open it with one hand.  My shoulders aren't getting any younger and this was part of my motivation to swap out. The second panel latches and unlatches itself as you open and close the cover.  Neat in concept, however it took me a minute to get used to closing the cover and not hearing the "latching" sound that would tell me it was locked in place. The paddle handles are a huge upgrade and I wouldn't be surprised to see them become the standard across the Realtruck line.  They effectively eliminate the concern that a thief could coat hanger the cover open and get to the contents in the bed. I'm not sure why the very front panel on my cover has a different finish from the other 3 panels.  I have a request into Realtruck to find out if mine was not manufactured properly or if it was by design.   All in all I'm pleased.  Same level of protection, looks good, keeps stuff mostly dry (they all leak around the tailgate) and easy to install.
