Morimoto Sierra Spec HID

Recommended Posts

The Sierra Spec kit from TRS includes the capacitor link, kit has everything you need. You don't need a canbus if you have the capacitor link.

Yup ordered the right kit just wanted to confirm.

What happens to DRL's with this kit? I believe the stock HIR's are ran at a lower voltage for the DRL, but with a HID that is not possible, the bulbs must be at full capacity. How does this kit compensate?

The capacitors tell the computer that all is working properly and since the signal from stock output goes to the wire harness which pulls power off of the battery, it will activate the lights at full power. So yes the kit will compensate and all will work properly. Your HIDs will be activated at full power when they are working as the DRLs

Excellent. Thank you.

This was the first thing I did to the truck. The stock lights were garbage. I couldn't see anything at night. When I did the lights they didn't have the "sierra spec" kit yet because it was early on and the truck was so new. I put together everything individually that now comes in the "kit" TRS was super helpful when we built the set up. I've had months of problem free use. the only issue arose when my plow was installed. The plow installer was not familiar with Hid kits and screwed up the wire harness for the plow/truck. Its all fixed now. I had TRS stuff on my last truck. Did 250k miles with them and never had issue. I keep a spare bulb and ballast for shits but doubt I'll need them.
The Sierra kit does have everything you'd need including the capacitor. Just an FYI. when you install them. if you get a buzz in the relay swap the way the factory harness is into the capacitor. If its backwards the relays get upset. Other than that its a user friendly install. Keep the ballasts in areas as dry as possible.
The light is better than oem for sure. I wouldn't call it fantastic but its definitely better. The high beam setting is bright but the way the projector is designed it actually points the light up. Too far in my opinion. No matter how low I adjust the housing I feel a lot of the high beams are lost into the trees. Its a lousy design in my opinion but it is what it is.

I'd suggest doing the HID fogs if youre particular because they will not match each other when you change the headlights to hid. I found TRS to be very helpful and have not had a single issue with them.
Also, I'd suggest getting the wire extensions when you order the kit. The truck is pretty wide and to keep the equipment high and dry you need to get them away from the front a little. If you get the extensions you'll have plenty of wire to put everything in the best location. Its worth the couple bucks extra to get them. On smaller vehicles the harness is enough but from experience I found, on these trucks the extensions are money well spent. Allows you to do a clean organized install.

I am planning on ordering this kit in the next day or two... can some of you who have it, take pics of your ballast mounting locations? I'm well aware they need to be in a dry area but if I know beforehand where I should install would be a great help!

I don't have any photos but I'll try to get some.
As far as installation, you need to remove most of the front pieces to get at the lights just for starters.

You need to trim the back of the oem cap that covers the actual bulb inside the housing. That is how you will get the feed out for the harness.
I have my relays mounted along the upper cross member above radiator.
The ballasts are mounted along each side for respective lights.

For such a big truck there is surprisingly little room for stuff like this. Because I have a bunch of extra things with wires it seems I'm almost out of space. I also have 2nd battery which takes away some room.
If I can get some photos I'll try to post them.

FYI, I had some flickering last night, but then it went away on it's own. I will update if it comes back or gets worse.

I troubleshot my flicker down to one of the relays, which happened to be buzzing very loud. So loud that you could hear it with the truck running. I contacted TRS and they sent me a new relay so I'm waiting for that. All that being said I did mention to the rep that the other relay was humming and asked if it was normal. Well...low and behold BOTH headlights went out on the way to work yesterday, making me late. I am really hoping they sent me two relays and not just one.

Spurshot mentioned in another thread he was having problems with his morimoto setup! Very concerning
