It will cost less than 1k. I love my 6.2L but i can't leave things alone i put a 2" leveling kit and 33" tires didn't really affect performance to much, but would like to get a little extra power. I will do the maintenance myself with a few buddies so only paying for parts and beer.

Do you have previous experience with changing gears? It's a pretty involved process. I've been around it enough to know that it's something left to a professional, haha. And, you're figuring the cost of a tune into your budget, right?

Have you priced them through GM yet? Last time I checked just a Ring an Pinion from the GM dealership was north of 800$ and you are going to need 2 plus the shim kits, crush sleeve, pinion seal and nut at the least. Bearings should all be good still. As far as I know no one makes an aftermarket set for 9.76".

Edit. The front you can go aftermarket for around 350; it is same as previous years.

Are their any visual differences we could look for? Some of you guys with post some pics and if you have max tow and 6.2 or 5.3????

But according to the response... all 6.2 and only the 5.3 with max tow.

Here is the axle/differential under my 6.2 with 3.42 gears.

Thanks for posting the pic. Unless they look identical, that's the 9.5" rear end. Mine looks exactly the same (also a 2014 6.2 3.42).

Could somebody with the NHT package post a pic of what the 9.76" looks like?

I think you (and I) have the 9.76 axle... I talked to a product rep from Detroit. They said all the 6.2s had 9.76. Not sure of the difference in looks of the 9.76 and the 9.5. More pics would be great.

Yeah, we need pics of a confirmed NHT 3.73 axle. There may have been a change from '14 to '15 as well.

This is interesting I was just under mine and I have a 6.2l 3.73 with NHT. I know I have the 9.76 it was on my build sheet. I was looking because I wanted a new differential cover from PML.

Differential is marked with:

0134

R9652

12 bolt

I have looked high and low for a differential cover without success.

I suspect the 9.76 and 9.5 are one and the same with exception of the ring/pinion set. AAM manufactures the axle assembly for GM, on it's website it lists the same carrier #40090728 for both 9.5 (3.42/3.73/4.10) and 9.76 (3.23/3.42/3.73). Both axle assemblies use the same pinion seal. Gear sets are different part numbers though. Just a guess, the 9.76 is using a HD gear set with a slightly wider tooth on the ring gear to increase contact area.

Wow, so they do look exactly the same. Given all the advertising of the 9.76" GM does I was sort of thinking it would be a beefier housing, maybe larger axles, etc. But if the housing is the same, carriers are the same, bearings are the same, etc, it's really not all that much of an upgrade.

Either way I think this is good news for those looking to swap gears as I would assume the 4.10's AAM now makes should work in either axle. Hopefully anyway.

2011 6.2 with NHT was 9.5". Are you getting confused with year. Maybe the new ones have 9.76" and pre-2014 has 9.5"?

Could have been a change for 15 to handle the lower gear ratios (higher driveshaft torque) behind the 8 speed.

Don't have a pic of it, but on the web from the pinion to the axle tube on pass side it will say 9.50 or 9.76 in the casting.

    • Hi all - my current truck is a 2022.5 1500 High Country 3.0. I bought the truck used last year. After doing some digging, I noticed that my truck's software is stuck on the original build from 2022. I have no available software updates. I talked to my dealer about this and they recommended not trying to force an update since the 36,000 mile warranty is expired. This is a big bummer since there have been many major releases since that have fixed small issues and improved speed/usability.   For reference, the current software build number is: full_gminfo37_gb-user 10 W158E-W164.4.2-QIH22B-563.3 158 release-keys Has anyone had a similar experience? Should I just forget about it and move on, or try a different dealer?
    • Sure. Buy it for me 🤣
    • Using zip ties but 2-3 they snap due to sharp edges. Just using a shoestring. Last longer. 🤣
    • I ordered the Snap On...waiting for it to come in later this week or early next week.   New front cover, new crank seal and new balancer are on. Water pump, pulley, fan, hoses, and plastics reinstalled. I can move forward knowing all my timing marks are dead on and the front engine is hopefully sealed better than it was. Take 2 with the water pump...trying high temp thread sealer on the lower bolts.   Rebuilt injector and new-new regulator is in, it looks like new. Top intake reassembled and all the bits are reconnected and snugged down.   Thinking about knock sensors again, I located both of mine and, there's your problem, Francis... The driver's side one is broke, plastic is bashed in, part of the wire is bare, and it appears to have been damaged like that for a long time. I saw the wire but didn't think anything of it. The knock sensor might not be my pulled timing issue, but it sure looks suspect. It must still be conducting, otherwise I'd expect a CEL. But perhaps with its sacred crystal inside exposed, jilted and dirty, maybe it's sending mixed signals. So I'm waiting for one of those and a new pigtail to come in. Pass side sensor looks good, except for the spark plug wire resting on it (!). The plug wires are healthy so it shouldn't be causing an issue, but I separated them and added zip ties to nearby looms to keep everything well apart.   So, I'm down to installing a knock sensor AND, oh, replacing the exhaust and cat. I actually think that's going to be fairly easy, it's all bolt-together, all new stuff from Walker is laid out on the shop floor ready to go. Hopefully have this thing on the road again for the weekend.   My luck? It will still be leaking oil, coolant, pulled timing, intermittent CEL for running rich, or it probably won't run at all -- because that's how this project has gone.   I've never worked on a vehicle so ...hurt? ...cursed? in my life. Everything has been effed with SO HARD, but I think...knock on wood...I've managed to undo all the backyard stuff and we're almost reset back to "just" an 80k mile, 30 year old Blazer.
