Exhaust with no drone?

Patriot, if you're referring to my post, I tried that and it got worse at higher speeds. Just my experience.

I did the muffler delete and left the flapper and rezzy a few days ago and am slightly regretting the decision. Around town it sounds great but at highway speeds it drones pretty bad. Not just in V4 mode but when at about 1200-1800 rpms. It sounds like an extra subwoofer in the truck. It's pretty annoying. It noticeably shakes the truck.

 

I'm thinking about the 22" manga flow and leaving the flapper on. I drive too much highway to adapt to the sound, just trying to figure out what will get rid of that deep vibration I'm experiencing without anything in place right now. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated!

 

Bite the bullet and go with the GM Performance Exhaust System by Borla. Yes it is an expensive way to go, but the payoff is "IT WORKS". I was very apprehensive about spending the money GM wanted for the system, but now that I've had it a few months, I don't regret my decision at all. I don't even know I have a performance exhaust on the truck unless I get on the gas. Then you know its there........not loud, not quiet......to me just right, with none of the drawbacks common to other systems.

 

(You have to use the real GM system. Ordering a system direct from Borla, which will be cheaper, will not include the Adaptive exhaust valve, which is on the GM version. It must be this valve that controls all that unwanted stuff.........whatever, it works.

I had the 22" Magnaflow with Flapper and Resonator delete. After 6 months I couldn't stand it anymore! I couldn't even hear the engine running!!! I went to a 14" Magnaflow... now a nice "muscle" sounding rumble, and wicked on acceleration.

 

I won't say "no drone" because that's not true.

 

But here's a fact: In my 40 years of driving, I've never had a car without aftermarket exhaust... I LIKE DRONE! :cheers:

So you're saying a shorter muffler made it quieter? I was always under the impression the bigger muffler (22") made it quieter.

No. I'm saying the 22" was WAY TOO quiet, so I went with the 14". When I said "I couldn't take it any more" I meant that I couldn't take the stock exhaust sound of the 22"... It sounded like a PRIUS! :nonod::lol:

I'm subscribing to this as I'm interested in what you guys come up with.

 

I do a lot of towing in the summer so I'm especially worried about drone. I did a muffler swap in my last truck (2009 2500HD) with a DynoMax and although I loved the sound I hated the drone... especially when towing.

 

Does anyone have the part number or series of the Borla muffler used in the GM Borla Exhaust? Maybe just a muffler swap on something similar will work?

Correct. I ran the 18 on mine and loved it. Subtle while on the highway and towing but when you got on it she would talk.

It has a nice low rumble and opens up when I get on it. Perfect. Also, and most importantly to me, little to no drone so far. Couldn't be happier thus far.

Did you keep stock everything else and just switch out the muffler? I've been wanting to get a better sound, but all this talk about the flappers and what not, I'm really unsure what to do. I've never owned a vehicle with the afm type of stuff. Any advice is appreciated.

+1, I'd definitely consider this if it's as good as you say. Does anyone have soundclips of the various setups, 22" vs 18" vs 14", it would be great to compare.

      Question for you Grumpy, why is diesel so much more than gasoline? Seems to me that it may be slightly a little less refined than gas and it doesn't have 10% alcohol which presumably lowers the price of gas

      How many years have I pointed out every point in that link to the folks here and been avalanched with criticisms and outright hostilities at times? I ran counter to even the great CUSTOMBOSS and Lake Speed Jr and the half dozen experts on YouTube and in the final.....GM, Physics (Stribeck) backs that Grumpy old Bear.    Honestly, I never said a thing engineering hadn't studied silly and laid in concrete during WWII. But I'm old, the information is old and yet, the Laws of Physics are eternal.    Okay there is one exception. I vehemently disagree with their use of the word 'tolerances' when what it meant is "clearance".   The clearance is the distance between two objects. The tolerance is the degree of acceptable variation permitted in that clearance. I.E., piston to bore clearance is 0.004" with a tolerance of +/- .0002" so the clearance is in specification if it lies between 0.0038" and 0.0042". Cutting that 'tolerance in half has ZERO impact on lubrication requirements. Makes for more difficulty in manufacturing.  But a tighter clearance 'MAY'. Depends on finish. Anyway....   It's one of those statements made by people to make themselves look smarter than they are to convince people who are as un-enlighten as they seem to manipulate their behaviors. But hey, the blind leading the blind puts them both in the pit.

      Out and about yesterday on a long Saturday drive I passed a lot of Shell stations. My preferred, so I pay attention. Lot's of small town Illinois so not six stations in three blocks like the city.    Everyone of them over a radius of say 100 miles had regular at $4.19 but one which was the one closest to home at $4.15. However Premium pricing varied greatly between 85 cents over regular to $1.50 over. I'm not counting the price of the station with the lowest regular so the reference is the same for the remainder and all within the same brand. However the spread discrepancy holds across all brands.     @txab, any thoughts on that?

      What are your thoughts? The Chevy Blazer relaunch was an epic case of 'lunchbag letdown'. Jeep Wranglers and Ford Broncos stick out like a sore thumb.    The AI photos do not look like a 'retro version', but shrunken Tahoes. Get away from the 'futuristic look'. I've seen two concepts. One had rectangular headlight like a Rivian and the other way too big headlights (similar to a previous non-Wrangler SUV) should include dual round headlights like the early version.   If not this would look OK   At least it has GM styling (albeit the K2XX) A lot of the images floating around look like Bronco IIs or the current Bronco. Looking at the Broncos in my area (central Ontario, it seems to be a mix of 2 doors and 4 doors, 'mall rated' to ones that could go offroad.    I'm sure a AT4 and AT4X RPOs could be outfitted similar to a Rubicon if the braintrust understood the whole offroad scene. Crossing my fingers that if it does see the light that the front air dam/bumper doesn't extend below the center line of the tire...
