Intermediate Steering Shaft

Hi,

Haven't been on for a while. Anyway, I have a question.

We have two Chevys; a 2003 Tahoe LT and a 2010 Silverado 1500 CC/SB LTZ.

The Silverasdo has been flawless.

The Tahoe has, as well, except for the intermediate steering great. I know it is not a safety issue, but it is a bit of a pain in the butt to have an eleven year old vehicle with a whole 30k miles on it that sounds like a DODGE.

Our local Chevy dealership did the ISS service several times and when it was out of warranty did another for $300 (some kind of special super-duper thing that was supposed to work ... but didn't.

My question is this: Has GM successfully addressed the intermediate steering shaft rattle and knock ... or do we drive down the road ashamed of our Tahoe that has so few miles on it???

Thank you for all replies.

Blessings,

Steve

You'll have to ask GM that , how would anyone here know the answer?

what service are they doing? if they are just greasing it, thats the old service. They came out with a new intermediate steering shaft from what i've seen, and if you replace it it is supposed to fix the problem. Also there is recommendation to replace the intermediate steering shaft bearing. The parts can be had for less than $200 on-line most places and from the videos I have watched if you are handy at all you can do it in just a few in your driveway. I know all this because my new to me tahoe has this issue and i have been looking up causes and fixes. Others just simple have taken the shaft out, put a grease zerk in it, so it is easy to grease with a grease gun at home, and reinstall the shaft.

OP, do yourself a favor, and buy a Borgeson steering shaft to replace the stock one. That will fix your issue permanently.

On my old truck I had it greased and then replaced. Each worked for a little while then came back

They are high dollar but that's what I'm planning on.

They are a little expensive. Summit sells them for $213. That's the route I'm going too when I replace mine. One and done.

Make sure it's not the bearing (plastic piece) at the bottom of the steering shaft, right before it goes into the firewall (by the pedals). Kind of has same sounds, symptom as ISS. If it's white it's the old version. If it's green its the updated one. If you grab the shaft and it rattles/moves at all in the bearing then it's toast. Pop the new (green) bearing in and it's fixed. It's an easy job.

I bought my iss from auto zone and it has worked perfectmfor two years. It was like 130 dollars I think. Then I did the bearing for giggles. It wasm20 dollars atthe dealer. Neither take long, just make sure to binge the steering wheel in place so you don't break the clock spring. That's expensive and kind of a pain.

Govtech,

I was under the impression that forums like this were places where folks helped each other.

My total mistake, I apologize for my error in judgment.

Steve , there aren't any engineers here from GM that can answer your very specific question , thx for the snotty reply ,

That ISS has been a PITA for GM for years

Forum members have replied with good suggestions ,

There was nothing wrong with my reply either ,,, I was GM tech and still wouldn't know if it's been fixed once and for all , how would anyone know ???

Dorman has made an aftermarket unit to address the issue (+/- $50).

I've had one on the shelf for a few years. Curiously, after yearly disassembly & greasing of intermediate shaft, "clunk" has not reappeared...

Having owned a 2002 Silverado for 12 years now I've had the opportunity to deal with this issue as well. I went through all of the normal things suggested here to include 3 shafts (2 GM parts and 1 Dorman part) as well as 2 different steering column bushings. What finally stopped mine from knocking was the brake pedal bushing.

The ISS went south on my '05 Suburban at around 20,000 miles. I had it replaced under warranty and hasn't been a problem since; I have 120,000 miles on it now with some dirt and rough road miles. After reading your post and some of the others, I'm feeling lucky that the problem hasn't come back.
