There ya go! Glad to hear you got the problem at least diagnosed. May not be fun work, but it will be rewarding once its back together and running well.

Keep up the good work.

SOAB! Sorry to hear that.

Any updates?

I finally got the cam shaft out last week. That is a bugger of a job right there. I had to drop down the steering assembly and front differential in order to get the oil pan off, so that I could remove the bolt from the oil pick-up tube on the bottom of the oil pump, so that I could remove the oil pump, so that I could get the timing chain off, so that I could get the cam shaft out.... did you follow all that?

I sent the cam shaft off to get re-done. The one lobe was damaged pretty good. I should be getting it back any day now. Then I get the fun job of putting it all back together! I'm hoping to have it done this week.

While I got it apart I'll be cleaning up the heads and re-seating the valves. What else should I do while I have it all apart?

Oil pump has to come out now? WTF! Never worked on any LS - just old school 350's or 262's.

Valve seals wouldn't hurt, if you haven't already done those. Maybe springs too, but I don't think you've got enough miles on them to worry about that too much.

This isn't my picture, but it's pretty much the same. The oil pump is on the crank shaft.

Valve seals will be replaced. New gaskets for everything that came off.

Whiskey Tango Foxtrot ....... GM designers never sleep! AHH now I see why it had to come off!

Wasn't picturing that style at all - looks just like a larger version of what was on a '00 Focus 2.0 SPI that I rebuilt the top end of, after it ingested a valve seat ...

My brother and I picked up a 2009 Silverado Hybrid with what was supposed to be a bad motor.

Put a rebuilt motor in along with a new AGM battery and the truck bucks violently after starting the engine and so now I'm trying to figure out what is going on. Going to hook the Tech II up to it again (unfortunately the Tech II card is a 2010 so it's not the latest).

VVT and AFM were deleted using the parts, but they are not programmed out of ecm yet as I was told that as long as I used all the hard parts for deleting those, the computer wouldn't be able to do anything to cam degree, or cause the engine to go into 4-cyl mode in any way (not even fueling).

New engine details:

I picked up an identical 'core' that wasn't able to start from a local salvage yard (lucky to find a LFA core within 50 miles) and went to town collecting parts to rebuild it, but with some changes, utilizing factory parts and an aftermarket Melling 10295 oil pump.

Parts used for the rebuild (all new or rebuilt):

GM LS3 head gaskets (verified they are the same thickness as LFA gaskets)

GM LS7 lifters

GM LS7 lifter trays

GM Ly6 valley cover

GM LS9 camshaft

ARP cam bolts

LS9 4x cam sprocket

rebuilt stock 243 heads

LS9 valve springs

LS2 timing chain

LS3 timing cover (no VVT)

LS2 timing chain dampener

Durabond coated cam bearings (original front cam bearing had a little scoring so I got the new bearings for peace of mind/cheap insurance).

Clevite 77 main and rod bearings (stock sizes as there was no crank/rod damage)

Piston-to-valve clearance was measured and stock pushrods from another engine were used as they were a perfect fit)

New oil pressure barbell

New timing/rear main cover/valve cover/valley cover gaskets

Block was cleaned and checked/honed prior to reassembly

Crank and cam were 'timed' prior to timing set being installed

Is there anything outside of the gas engine (aka in the hybrid system) that could be causing the truck to run so violently? Truck has 142,xxx miles.

Thanks in advance for any help.

I said that code 304 misfire #4cyl moved coils injectors to see if code moves to no still #4 cyl misfire code timing light flashes on all plug wires but no flash on#4
Likely a wiring problem to the #4 coil

    • I can only guess as well that something was clicked on that brought you to the half ton choices by accident. By all means try again and chose the 3500 and sort out that its the cab and box configuration you want and choose four wheel drive ( rather obvious to have a transfer case ) and to make sure the dually isn't chosen. I find or at least did a couple of years ago when I was sifting through the options that it would sometimes jump ahead after choosing the series of truck and in this case 3500 and skip some of the other initial configuration choices and have to watch the heading bar and sometimes back up by choosing the first in the series of option break downs. I think sometimes the computer will remember items that were last chosen and skip over the first part. Anyway go through it all and depending on the trim level chosen and I think the LT is one that may fall into that where the option of having the 4 high auto transfer case can be chosen, where as a High Country doesn't show that option as it just comes with the fancier ( not necessarily better though in terms of potential problems ) transfer case but for sure both transfer case choices are equipped with high and low range in the HD truck segment. Like Newdude said who works at a dealership, its the half tons that are the ones that will come with the single speed unless certain options or trim levels are chosen that add the two speed transfer case but as your looking at an HD, you don't have to worry about that hot mess.    One item that at least didn't show up and not sure if it does yet or not in the HD options on the manufactures pubic website is the upfitter in cab switch option if one is desiring that. Unfortunately its not wired in at the factory but the panel with the switches is on the dash but the wiring harness to be installed gets tossed under the rear seat to be installed by whomever after the fact to complete the installation.
    • Yesterday we brought home a 6yr  old Havanese dog from a nearby SPCA.  We've had her for 24 hours and we are delighted with how well she is adjusting to her new home.  It  was a huge decision to adopt a dog at this stage in our lives but we believe we made the right choice!   it was reported that her first 6 years were ones of neglect.  I think she's already realizing her life is going to get a whole lot better...  so is ours!
    • I thought I was building a HD 3500 srw, maybe I was lost.
    • No doubt, I definitely agree with you. However, considering the 6.2 and 3.0 have been catastrophically failing with very little miles, I figured I would put trouble free. I’m at 18,4xx and still not a single issue.
    • It’s never dry here but it gets hot. My 4 vehicles I keep at home drive an 18 mile loop. One 6 days a week. Two about 3 days each and one once a month. Only one goes on trips about 4 times a year 1000 to 2000 miles each time. One 26 years old gets driven once a month for 22 years. One 14 years old goes 6 days a week. The other two are recent at 2 and 4 years. All are performing normal no extra service other than that would be half of recommended or severe service in the maintenance manual. No extra water or steam out the exhaust or premature plug wear. I would consider an 18 mile loop would be enough. So apparently once a month at 18 miles for 22 years has kept the collector car running well. About 45 minutes a month.
