2015 GMC Sierra Paint Problem

Recommended Posts

Posted

I have a 2015 GMC Sierra SLT CC All Terrain in Black, I purchased about 6 weeks ago and currently have 1600 miles.

I washed my truck over the weekend and noticing a lot of scratches that go beyond paint and clear coat.

Its been through the car wash at the dealer when I purchased it and hand washed since. I used a micro fiber hand mitt.

My question is, is the paint on the '15's that thin or is my truck that faulty?

I had an '05 Silverado for ten years and never had scratches like this on my Silverado.

Just looking for insight before taking it to dealer.

Not just your 15....the paint black paint on my 14 is pretty thin too. I have quite a few nicks on my front painted bumper. I would avoid any mechanical car washes. Hand wash is the best. And get a couple coats of wax on there to help protect the paint a little more.

Not really anything we can do aside from a complete repainting, but thats just ridiculous I think

Its just less durable than previous years due to EPA standard of water based paints.

Yes, it's that thin. Don't look at one spot too long, you'll burn a hole right through it. The paint is the worst I have ever seen.

Good luck with the dealer. The service manager will try to change the subject, at all costs. Mine is going to get one more chance after winter is gone, and that is it.

I just received a letter from an attorney in the mail Saturday. Don't ask me how he knew I had a new Sierra, but they found out some how. Obviously enough people are getting fed up, and tired of hearing the same old song and dance from GM and the dealers. They had a list of several of the defects in the letter, and they are spot on. I'm not throwing it away.

Paint is water based now and is thinner weaker paint. My experience with started on my 10 camaro, one of the first few years that they used the new paint. Camaro was black and they used a white primer, so you can see how that went.

From what it sounds like though, you would have little recourse with a dealer. scratching unless noted at pick up is very hard to come back on a dealer for. Which do the dealers defense I can see why,

Ive heard about this paint, is this standard on all makes? (water base) or just something GM cant figure out, I do use a car was alot during the cold months, and have noticed my hood has some marks, nothing that won't rub out thou, Well I think,,,, uhgggg but when its 5/10 degree's I don't really have a choice, only thing that gets touched is the hood and roof, so its not totally "touchless" as they say

Im pretty sure its GM widespread as well as the other two of the big three. As far as imports I dont know, assuming some do. I have a 14 silvy, wife a 13 malibu, before that I had a 2011 F150 and she had a 12 Taurus, all of which used the water based paint. IMO it seems GMs paint was weaker.

I have a lot of paint experience from the picture it looks like the paint is flaking because of a contaminant under the paint. Looks like in those spots the paint did not properly bond to the surface. Just my opinion.

GM has super thin paint, blaming it on water base paint is a joke as the other auto makers have no problem putting the paint on thick enough...

So.... went to the dealer yesterday. Was told that because I have 35's, my odometer doesn't read correctly and that GM might not cover the paint because they can't verify the mileage...... Which i know the mileage is correct. :D My truck has just over 13000 miles on it. The lift went in at 9000 miles and I was having paint issues before. I had told my service manager at the time about it and he was suppose to make note in my service record. I also told the NEW service manager that I had talked with the manager then about lifting the truck and if it would do anything to my warranty, he had assured me that it wouldn't. So now I wait to hear from GM as to what they are going to do. When I was talking to the manager yesterday, he told me that "we haven't had any issues here so far" Well I know the people the work at the body shop the dealer uses and I had already talked to them about the paint problem. They told me that they already had a new one come in for the same exact problem and they repainted it!!!!!!!!!! So I quickly let the manager know that I knew there was at least one claim through the dealer for it, he didn't like that I knew that. LOL I have also went through and found as many pics and 2014+ trucks that have paint issues to show them i'm not the only one.

I WILL FIGHT THIS TO THE DEATH!

To this day I am trying to figure out why the dealers are so scared to present issues to GM about complaints? It makes me wonder if that is why GM always says they have never heard of a issue is because the dealers wont push the complaint up.

The Corvette owners had issues with the paint on the new C7, took it to GM and the plant manager at Bowling Green. They agreed the pain quality was sub par and corrected the paint process and then worked out resolutions with the affected cars. Why is it so hard to get that for other GM vehicle owners as well?

The water based paint is the culprit though, my dad worked and retired from a GM plant, they had the same complaints at the plant level once they changed his plant over to water based paint. Poor coverage quality and was easily chipped or scratched. Water based paint is just not as durable as urethane paint.

I am currently on the phone with GM and this guy is telling me that tire size should have no affect on warranty. There is no reason it shouldn't be covered, i'm on hold, he is talking to the dealer.

It's off to the district rep. Should have some news today. I will keep this updated.
