I just used my last free oil change and I will be doing them from now on. I see that it needs to be dexos1 apporved and 0w20. I have always liked valvoline full synthetic, because after 200,000-300,000 mile when you pull the valve cover or oil pan the engine still looks like new. No sludge or oil build up. I read on valvoline website and it says there 0w20 is no dexos apporved. I see alot of guys like mobil 1 but i never used it for long period of time to know if it keeps the engine as clean as valvoline.

Also what kind of oil filters do you guys use? Ive always used frame because it is whats around most of the time. but i also see people like the k&n

I'm a Mobil fan and I also use Mobil 1 oi filters. I plan on doing Mobil 1 Full synthetic when I start doing them myself and may even keep changing at 7,500 instead of 10,000 like you normally do with full synthetic. The 7,500 that GM uses as oil life is from them using synthetic blend, but since all of the maintenance intervals are 7,500 I will probably still change every 7,500.

I use Valvoline 0w 20. I've used Valvoline in all my vehicles and have been very happy with it. I use Mobile 1 filters.

Thanks for the info guys. I change the oil from 3000-4000 miles or 60-65%. I have had 4 oil changes in 14000 miles.

As for pennzoil it is one of the worst ive seen about sludging up an engine. every engine ive ever tore down using pennzoil. has had at least a gallon of sludge just under the valve cover.

That reputation was from Pennzoil paraffin based oil and goes back decades, like when I was a kid, and that's a long time ago. And yes, it did sludge an engine. One engine I worked on had what looked like a few gallons of grease in the rocker covers. Pennzoil Ultra Platinum is a full synthetic on par with Mobil 1 or others. Completely different oil. I would not hesitate to use Pennzoil Ultra Platinum. I just happen to be a long time Mobil 1 user, having successfully used it in my last three trucks for up to 225,000 miles in one.

Use a filter made by Champ (K&N, STP), Wix, (Napa Gold, Mobil 1) or the top of the Fram line, the Ultra (only). The construction of the new AC Delco for our engines had some detractors on Bobstheoilguy.com. Something about a part that was steel is now cardboard. I bought some of the old ones. A filter can deteriorate and start to fall apart after extended use we see with synthetics. Possibly why the Fram Ultra Guard was renamed to Ultra Synthetic.

Mobil 1 is not a full synthetic anymore. Those of you that keep calling Mobil 1 a full sythentic, need to do some research. If I recall, Mobil 1 Extended Protection is their only fully synthetic formula you can buy.

I guess their site is completely wrong then.... as far as I've seen all Mobil 1 is full, but they also have just Mobil Super that's conventional except Mobil Super Synthetic which is also full synthetic. It looks like they don't make synthetic blend for a passenger vehicle, so Mobil is either conventional or full synthetic. Taking a quick look on their site helps a lot.

Why does their site say their oil is full synthetic?

"Mobil 1 is a blend of synthetic and dino oils. It was originally a pure synthetic, but Mobil successfully lobbied to continue using the 'synthetic' description while changing the formulation to a blend. They can do that in the US (where their lobbying dollars get traction), but NOT countries like Japan and many European countries where community members actually require that products are described accurately"

"Most major oil companies such as Pennzoil, Castrol, Mobil 1 are not fully synthetic. Most are hydrocracked oils that perform similar to FULLY synthetic oils. Truly synthetic oils ( Group VI and V) are Amsoil Signature Series and Redline oils. To answer your question Mobil 1 is not fully synthetic but it does contain some synthetic base stocks. Just not fully."

Do a google search on Mobil 1 not being a true synthetic. You'll be reading for days and days...

The Mobil 1 line of Mobil's oil products has always been (and continues to be) marketed as a full synthetic oil: https://mobiloil.com/en/motor-oils/synthetic

In the US, Group 3 base stocks can be marketed as being fully synthetic. Group 3 oils are very similar in performance to Group 4 (PAO) base stocks. Most Mobil 1 oils are a blend of different synthetic base stocks (Group 3,4, and 5) but they don't publicly disclose what percentages they are. I have seen evidence through MSDS sheets that Mobil 1 0W-20 Advanced Fuel Economy is 30-40% PAO with rest presumably Group 3. Their 0W-20 Extended Performance looks to be 60-70% PAO.

After some more research. You guys are right the only true synthetic oils out there is amsoil and redline. I cant find much on royal purple on if its a true synthetic. Im going to start using amsoil with there oil filter or k&n filter. I know at $12 a qourt is kinda high. but when your wanting to keep your truck until it falls slam apart. I think the best oil is going to be hard to beat, Knowing the 5.3 engine can make it to 400,000 miles being a well maintained.

A buddy of mine has a 2000 1500 with the 5.3l he bought new. he is at 420,000 miles and the only things that has been replaced is crank sensor and rearend. He always changed the engine oil, filter, and air filter when the light came on. He used standard oil, like moble one non synthetic.

If your the kinda guy that plans to trade in a few years or lease. I would just run the cheapest oil i can get.
