Stabilitrac Issue from lift or tires

Recommended Posts

Hopefully you get it solved. Either way please keep us updated. I am very interested in this topic as my truck should be finished with lift install tonight or early tomorrow and if I experience any of these issues I would like to at least have a small idea of how to handle it.

Mine comes on less since I had the alignment redone but not as much. I am going to a BDS authorized installer next Wed to get my coilovers lowered an inch or so and they are going t o re align it again. Hopefully the way they align it will fix the stabilitrack issue.

zero issues with mine. i'm running a 6" bds lift, i think improper alignment jobs might be contributing to this.

An alignment shouldn't be an issues for me. The place I used is by far one of the best alignment shops I've ever used and they are use to lifted trucks. But you never know they could have messed something up. I'm going to a shop this weekend to have them check the lift and I'll let you guys know what they say as well.

All,

Please keep this post updated with your experiences. Due to this issue, I am hesitating on pulling the trigger on the lift. If we can solve the stabilitrac issue, then I will proceed. Planning on BDS, possibly coilover set up, leafs and 35's but not if its going to make the truck annoying to drive.

Will do! I was actually looking at a Southern Comfort Automotive 2015 GMC Sierra 1500 APEX edition that is park outside my work on display. I noticed the truck has a 6" lift but the stabiltrack lines had far more slack than mine did. I am going to go over my truck tonight with the BDS installation instructions and see if possibly that is the issue.

Maybe there are extended lines for lifted trucks? Wouldn't that be a kicker if all these problems were because during turns we're pulling the wires tight and it breaks/loosens the connection just enough to trigger it. I wish it was something as simple as that, then I could order my lift and stop agonizing over whether I want to take the plunge or not.

How often does the stabilitrak kick on and is it annoying enough to make you wish you hadn't lifted the truck? Does it make it difficult to drive or cause anything squirrely that can cause other driving problems?

I am trying to get an idea of how much pain I would be in for with a lift. I don't need a lift, I just like the look of lifted trucks better and would prefer to do it to my truck now and enjoy it, rather than waiting until its old. But if it is going to make me have regrets, I won't do it at all, or wait until there is a bona-fide fix out there. Comments?

i've installed my kit plus 3 others 2 were 14 gmcs and 2 were 14 chevys and all have no issues, i took the time to make sure all the abs lines had ample clearences too, there is some massaging to be done to the lines and wires.

I'm also having this problem. Only in sharp turns both left and right turns. 6" lift 35" tires. people having this problem, is your gas pedal also shuddering?

I am pretty convinced the stabilitrack issues are caused by poor alignments. I have had NTB and the dealer do alignments and the dealer was the worst I could visibly see the positive camber. Like BDS told me it needs to be done by an alignment shop that has experience with lifted trucks. The alignment cannot be done using OE specs as he truck is no longer stock. It needs to accommodate for the size of tire and how much offset the wheels have. You still likely need to go to the dealer to reset steering position and yaw sensors to 0. BDS told me these trucks are extremely sensitive and if alignment is out by just a few degrees in any way there will be stabilitrack issues. My stabilitrack comes on maybe once a week since NTB redid the horrible alignment the dealer did. I am still going to a BDS shop next week to lower the coilers an inch to give it some rake and they are going to align it. They say they haven't had any issues after they install BDS and their alignments are done. Forum member Scottsglock17 lives near me and he has a 6.5 zone and body lift with no issues. I am going to the shop he used hopefully I will be trouble free after Wed next week. By the way the ride has improved a lot since it was installed it took longer to breaking the rear springs since I only commute 1.5 miles to work. I only average 500 miles a month or less.

What is stabilitrack? I have a 12" lift with 22X12 wheels 44 offset, with 37" tires and I've never seen it before, but always hear about people talking about it

Stabilitrac = GM word for traction control.

That is actually incorrect. Stabilitrac and traction control are actually two different products but piggy back off each other. Traction control is designed to keep you from spinning the tires where as stabilitrac is designed to apply the brakes to each wheel at different intervals to straighten the truck. The idea is to help prevent roll overs and I believe is also now a government standard.

    • Late reply, but yes—it works on the SLT trim. Compatibility comes down to the plastic shroud shape behind your mirror, not the trim badge itself. On the SLT with auto-dimming, it uses a plug-and-play Y-harness off the mirror/rain sensor power, so no need to run wires down to the OBD port. If anyone's ever unsure about fitment, just drop a photo of your mirror housing and we can double-check it.   Appreciate the detailed feedback on the install! On the windshield glare—we actually took feedback like yours and developed a dedicated CPL (polarizer) filter to cut down dash reflections on sunny days. If you're still running the cam, shoot me a DM. I'd be happy to send a CPL filter over for you to test out—no charge.
    • There are no stickers in your glovebox?
    • Look at the numbers on the stickers in the door jam...
    • Yes, every time the developer updates his code, you must recompile. I will private message you with the latest because it changes pretty much with every version.
    • After I wrote that reply I went for a ride. 85 F out. So trans started at 85 F and it shifted the same as it did an hour latter at 168 F. I've never actually recorded the to cold to shift point but it is under 32 F before they start hanging on to a lower gear or leaving the converter unlocked. Both intended to heat fluid.    Yes, brake or bake. Absolutely.      Your welcome. True research ended decades ago. Field trials are still in play.    There is a thing called oxidation onset temperature. This is the heat related oxidation not the O2 exposure kind. For mineral oil that starts at 140 F. So what happens after 140 F? Each 20 F cuts fluid life in half! Does using a Full Synthetic improve that? Yes! By how much? Depends on the base oil type and a few other factors. But enough to notice. Some esters are even higher. There are even synergies between types the will raise it higher than any one component is alone.    Then there is "Hindered" oils. Antioxidant additives. Hindered Polyol Esters can sit at 500 F for years in a turbine.   When a blender brags his oil will 'take 500 F" in service he doesn't specify for how long. Water will dance on a 500 F hot plate for several seconds. @newdude put up a chart showing the relationship between fluid temperature and it's life in an automatic transmission. Here's a version of that chart for Group III based oils. These temperatures are those in the pan as observed as 'normal'. that is you drive as you do for as long as you do under what load you ask of it and whatever that temperature is this graph applies to. Flash temperatures of a few minutes isn't what his means.    Note that fluids held at a constant 240 F have a service life of only 20K miles. 220 F explains the factory exchange limit, eh? My equipment I keep under 180 F and I'm good if the cooler will hold it as low as 140 F. But that's me.
