Sell '06 and buy new or keep?

My dad drives an '06 Sliverado crew cab Z71 that has less than 75k and is mint. He's thinking about buying a new Chevy or RAM, but I'm wondering if he should just keep what he's got? In the end it's his money, but after driving a few the other day I wasn't super impressed. Sure they are shiny and new but unless he gets it loaded, which he probably won't, I still like the older one maybe. I still love my '04 Yukon XL Denali with 240k.

There are days I wish I never got rid of my '05 Silverado Z71. Other than the blend door actuators clicking and going bad, I never had a problem with it. And it only had 100k miles on it.

But for the most part, I'm glad I upgraded. I got some new gadgets, a little luxury. Only hate it on the day I have to make payments now

My 2006 has everything I want... If I wanted a fancy head unit I could get a much better one than GM offers for a lot less than $50k... I'm very happy with my pickup, so for me it would make no sense to buy a different one. If he's happy with it, may as well keep it. If not, there are plenty of people ready to grab it.

I've been in the same boat for a few years regarding my '02 Silverado. I finally made up my mind, and I am definitely buying a new one. But since so much time has passed, the only person that see's my '02 as having any value is me, so I'm keeping it instead of putting the few thousand dollars toward a new one. I'll beat it up around the farm until it dies. There's a lot to be said for owning a vehicle outright.

Make sure that if he buys a new one to take it on the highway and make sure it doesn't vibrate. Because if that's something that will bother him, it will be a fight to get it fixed. Trust me. Go read some of the last pages of the vibration forum in the Chevy problems/recall section of this forum.

DO NOT SELL IT! KEEP IT! That thing is a gem with only 75k miles! 2006 was the last great year to buy a GM truck in my opinion. The last year to buy a truck that will easily go 200k+ miles with proper maintenance. These newer trucks, and all vehicles really, have become like disposable plates and utensils...use them for a breif period and then buy or lease something new every few years. I have a hard time seeing anything built after 2006 lasting 200k miles without expensive repairs. They simply just don't build them like they used to.

Only 75K? That means he hardly uses it. No need to drop that much money on something that seems to be used for utility purposes. Tell him to buy some toys to pull behind it :)

My 2011 had 24,000 miles on it when I traded for my 2014. If I had to do it all over again, I definitely would have kept my old truck. I usually trade every 3 years or so, and this is the first time I've been disappointed in my decision. As Bdkfl said, be sure he drives the new one in varying conditions and speeds. Some guys love the new trucks, and some guys convert to other brands after experiencing the problems of the 2014+ platform.

Thanks for the replies! I was thinking of telling him if he wants something different to just lift it a couple inches, new rims, bigger tires, step bars, CAI, and a few other goodies. Not sure if that's his style though. If he does that I'll buy it when he wants to sell again. :)

I would vote to keep it if possible. I loved my 2002 (ext cab, Z71, 4.8) and had planned on being in it for a minimum of 15 years but alas major rust problems is what got me into my 2014 last year. My new silvy is nice with a lot of cool options and a ton more power than my old 4.8 but I do not think it is made as well as my 2002 model. I would have kept my old truck but I drive my company truck 5 or 6 days a week and my personal rig only gets driven on the weekends plus I also ride my motorcycles quite a bit so I couldn't justify it just sitting around and not getting driven. I bought it used in 2003 with 25k miles on it and put another 100k on it myself with no major problems in the 11.5 years I owned it. I would suggest if that 2006 model is still rust free and no mechanical problems is to keep it for a few more years at least.

I had a 2006 crew z71 and I believe it was lt1 package (basic). Still bad power windows and doors and driver seat, but nothing crazy. Mine was great shape with 102k miles. I was able to get $16k toward a new one on trade. They re-sold it for around $17,200. I was sick of the horrible suspension on that 2006. Front end was the worst with the rack and pinion, and torsion bars.

Overall, glad I bought a new truck, and did well in value for my old.

When I'm towing my 14 makes me smile all the way, but honestly I had a immaculant 05 with just over 100k and I think I should have kept it, reason for this is I do not for see me keeping this truck for 100k and 6 yrs, at least if his radio poops he can replace with ease

    • Hello hello looking forward to expanding my knowledge of the 2026 2500 HD that I just bought.   Truck has 3500 miles on it four-wheel-drive crew cab and I’m about to put a 6 1/2 inch BDS lift on it 18 x 10 -25 offset with 37’s   Already have the wheels and tires just waiting on the lift install in about three weeks   Question what surprises am I not gonna be happy with?  I’m not new to lifted trucks so I know that acceleration towing gas mileage all that is affected..   Question is those of you that have this truck this powertrain with a 10 speed Allison and have done the mods that I’m doing,,, how bad is it? Is that Allison constantly gonna be hunting for the right gear to go into? And what about towing, acceleration, fuel consumption as mentioned?    Lastly how come I can’t find any ring pinion gear set up for these axles and when could I expect to see them?   I apologize if there’s any typos I’m doing speech to text on my iPhone.
    • I've got a 2013 2500 6.0L Flexfuel. Drove the truck earlier today with no issues. Went to run an errand tonight and noticed key fob wouldn't work. Figured battery was dead, so replaced fob batter. Still wasn't working. Grabbed my other set of keys with the other fob and that one wasn't working either. So I manually unlock truck and insert key. Interior lights come on, dashboard lights up, turn key and truck starts. Turn truck off, like a moron, and try starting again. This time no crank, no click, no nothing. Lights still come on and dash lights up, but now I'm getting a service 4wheel drive, service tire monitor, etc. Check voltage on battery and Im showing 12.2v. Throw my battery charger on it and give it 15 mins and try starting again. But still no crank no start. Decide maybe its a bad battery, run to autozone grab a new one and put it in. Same issue. Disconnect battery and let it sit for 15 mins. Try again and still nothing. I had managed to roll the windows down earlier as its a humid night, but now I can't get them to roll up. Power locks are also not working now. Then randomly I try the key again, and it fires right up. Immediately I roll up the windows as we have nothing but rain forecast this week. I shut it back off wait 30 seconds and start up again. Worked a 2nd time. So turn it off, start putting things back together. Try one more time, and back to no crank no start. And now the car alarm starts going off. Had to disconnect battery and leave it that way for the night as I don't think my neighbors would appreciate my alarm going off again tonight. Any thoughts or help would be appreciated.
    • No one will care for you like you care for you. Do what you can for as long as you can. IMHO of course.
    • How about them NICKS!!!
    • Hi there.  Long time lurker, first post.    i have read the previous posts regarding the water ingress problem with this emblem.  I bought my 1500 SLT the  summer of 2025 new and after reading the MANY problems with these emblems failing I decided to install one anyways.  As per a YouTube video, I sealed ( or tried to) this sign with silicone sealant around the outer perimeter joint and the holes that were already somewhat sealed on the rear plate of the emblem.  And installed the connector assembly using dielectric grease on the connectors. The installation looked great and worked well for about 4 months……then FAILURE.  Grrrrrr…… I live in the great white north and wash my truck weekly in an automatic car wash  to keep the salt off.  Let me tell you that removing the old, failed emblem is a whole different animal than removing the OEM individual letters without removing the grill assembly. Mainly because the illuminated logo is built differently than the original letters which  you can remove the red surface lettering with a knife or some kind of blade which gives access to the tabs which hold the logo onto the grill. So I had to essentially destroyed the old emblem to remove it. Doing so killed my chance of doing somekind of autopsy on the failed , old logo.  But there was plenty of water inside when I ripped it apart.  Prior to installing the new assembly I tried it with the old harness and it works fine.   Does anyone have any insight as to where the water is getting into this emblem? I intend to seal the new logo with slow curing epoxy this time around using a syringe.  I think this newer emblem may be an updated unit which I hope GM got the vendor to fix. It has an October 2025 date on it.    If this one  fails,  I am just going to revert back to the non-illuminated letters….AFTER PULLING THE GRILL.    Any thoughts on sealing with epoxy would be appreciated. Thx!   Doug
