4wd updates to ecm

Read thru what I said, I spoke to the head "read" Chief Engineer over the entire GM truck/SUV line about this update, it only reprograms the transfer case module and nothing else, that module is completely separate from the TCM (transmission control module) which handles shifting and the transmission side of torque management.

Just curious, is this the same engineer that oversaw the release of the radios in these trucks, and is now overseeing the 1-2 year update to make the reception as good as my 2011?

I had the recall done to my truck. It erased my diablo tune, and I didn't realize it until I went to adjust the tire size because I put the 275/60's on at the same time. I also decided to plug the intune in my computer to check for updates. Ironically I noticed the instant mpg drop a lot on wot acc. Before the recall/update/tires the instant wot mpg would be 4 mpg, maybe seeing 3 mpg a couple times. After the recall and tires only, the instant mpg goes to 1 mpg on wot acc., and often see 3-4 mpg on only fairly brisk acc. So now after the recall, tune update and tires, the truck is a lot quicker. It will acc fairly hard past 100 mph to 110 then start to accelerate not so hard, but still harder than before. So my frustration is since all these changes were done about the same time, I have no idea what to credit anything for. I do know that the recall erased my ecm/tcm tune. It also changed my instant mpg display, seemingly more accurate now. Overall mileage is the same. I know now my truck runs a lot better now with the tune update and bigger tires oddly. I doubt the recall has much to do with that, but find it hard to believe the recall did nothing other than reprogram the tccm.

You must have amazing pull at GM if you can directly talk to the head engineer of the entire GM Truck / SUV Line. Why don't you get him to document it in an email and show us all proof.

I wont say I have some pull, a simple email to the exec leadership staff at GM on an issue resulted in him being the one to be asked to contact me. I have already verified who he is and what his title with in GM is, so I don't need to "prove" it to you by posting an email. I had a conference call with him and 3 engineers from the infotainment group on Wednesday of this week in regards to the radio reception issues and at the end of the call I inquired about the transfer case update. The info I got from him I verified thru my service manager at the dealership I use who confirmed they only re-program the TCM unless the customer has any other open programming updates, if those exist then the dealer will update any modules in the powertrain at that time.

As of now I am the customer GM is using to test out the updates on the infotainment system as GM rolls them out, I have meet with engineers twice now that GM has flown out to my location to run market tests and collect data and also then when they came back to install new hardware and programming back when they first thought they had the issue on the radios solved. As of now GM hands are tied on the radio system as they are waiting on the infotainment vendor to finish the final testing on the new calibration which then has to be tested by the FCC and validated along with the .GOV making sure it passes Federal testing as well. Then once that part is finished GM then has to finish their side of the validation and certification before they can roll the update out to the owners, me being the first one who get the update and test it out for 2 weeks to insure it works before GM puts it into the dealer system to roll out to the customers.

All of my updates on my truck are up to date, the only one I have open is the transfer case update. I just checked on that this week and will be going to the dealer to have it updated in the next week or so.

So question if you like, I don't care. I have no reason to lie and am like any other owner that may have an issue with their truck. Maybe it was because I worked for GM for a couple of years or that both of my parents retired from GM is the reason I am speaking with someone as high up the chain as the person I am dealing with. People also need to realize when issues come up it is not always as simple as coming up with a repair and then pushing it out, some things have multiple phases of testing and certification they have to pass before the manufacture can roll them out to the public, the lighting update was another one of these issues where GM had to invest time into the update before it could be rolled out to the trucks.

Not going to question what or who you know but would be interesting to hear from the lead designer how a transfer case update fixed erratic shifting characteristics. Not saying your a liar but neither am I and this update fixed something, not sure what but the truck simply drives better.

as I said you would have to ask your dealer what all they reflashed when they did your update, the transfer case module is separate from the transmission control module (which is actually inside of the transmission). The TCM is what controls shifting and the transmission side of torque management.

Now the tech could have cleared the adaptive learning tables from the TCM which would then allow the transmission to have to re-learn all of its shifting habits again, that can affect shift quality.

Think its possible there was a bad line of code in the transfer case module that the TCM and ECM didn't agree with. In the end all of these things work together to some degree to propel the truck forward. They are all aware of each other.

When in 2wl drive, the transfer case is basically direct drive via 1 clutch which is on or off. No software required other than to apply the clutch. No magic. In auto etc it's a different story though.

Can you ask them if they are working on a transmission control update?

Also, is the Infotainment system update supposed to fix the random static I get sometimes when I open a door and the LCD backlight turns on?

How about the random black screen?

I just had this update/recall done. I've only had the truck for a month, less than 500 miles put on it, so nothing really feels natural with it yet. I can't say that I feel much of a difference after the recall. The throttle might be a little less laggy, and the trans has seemed to shift down better, depending on the throttle position. I was running 35ish and floored it, and it still took the trans a second or so to figure out what gear it wanted. It does seems to switch into V4 mode more frequently around town.

For those with the laggy throttle feeling, search for a thread about placing a washer under the gas pedal assembly. I did this last week before the recall and I could definitely tell a difference. There was about 1/4" of play at the assembly base, which translated to about 1/2" of throttle movement before the throttle engaged.

Just went in for an inspection, they performed the "campaign - recalls" 9101695 transfer case shift control module. Seriously, completely different. So much smoother, noticed it immediately. It was so smooth at first I thought something was wrong with it haha. Not going to try to explain why some notice it and some don't, but I definitely do.

I had the update done also. My truck does seem to shift smoother. Mine wasn't bad to begin with but it's smoother now. Not in my head either.

I had it done yesterday too, no change to shifting. I firmly believe the people that think this made a difference just needed to have their transmission and transfer case be set back into relearn mode.
