Door rattle

Truck has been in for adjustment to the driver's door twice now and it still rattles. It seems to me that there is way too much movement in the driver and passenger door. It moves to the point that the weather stripping makes a rattling sound against the painted surface of the door.

The first time they adjusted it they pulled the top in too far and it still made the noise at the bottom of the window, now they have adjusted it out too far and it makes the noise all around the window.

I am thinking about taking it back for service trip number 7 next week so they can fix this, the solenoid lock for the shifter and a rattle in the upper dash. I am also going to complain about the brand new transmission they just installed at 6200 miles.

Anyone else have the door rattling problem? It is right by my ear and really annoying.

Other than items I put in the truck, like my cell phone in the cell phone tray in my Silverado, my truck is 100% rattle free and I am VERY conscious of sounds. I'm pretty OCD when it comes to cabin sounds and my truck is the most "rattle" free vehicle I've ever owned.

What happened to your first tranny? And which one do you have?

This is by far the biggest rattle box I have ever owned.

Mine is a 2015 double cab made in 2014, 5.3 with 6L80E.

I could reproduce a 2-3 flare by driving the truck, letting it sit for 20 minutes to 5 hours and as long as I did not use reverse when I got back in it would flare 500 RPM. They took the trans out and took it apart to find nothing. Instead of putting it back in, they ordered a new one and sent my in to GM. Less than a week on this one and it is better, but it still flares, still clunks, still tries to slide the rear tires while braking. Downshifting is also sketchy.

After washing my truck I can see the rub marks where the weather stripping is rubbing on the plastic of the door and the door weather stripping is rubbing on the paint.

Also found that when the dealer painted the frame for the second time they got over spray all over the nerf bars. Going to be a fun one next week.

andy I have had the same promblem with my drivers side door. I hear popping and rattles every time I go over any type of bump . There is no question it's the weatherstripping and rubber seals around the door and window . I have had the plastic and rubber trim replaced and the door adjusted and still hear noises . I have even tried Lubing all the rubber and still hear it. To me it just seems there is to much play in the door when it's shut . Between that and the steering column rattle ( which is mentioned in a another post ) both are pretty annoying .

I was looking at it this morning and I think it is actually the plastic around the window. If you push it straight in and then release it you will get the noise. Maybe it just needs some adhesive under it or some foam tape.

For your steering column rattle have you checked if it's coming from the hood release? I have a rattle coming from the steering column and determined I think it's the hood release. If I put pressure on it while driving it stops. I just started a thread about this. Looking for a solution to get it stop outside of putting some kind of tape on it. Thinking about wedging a piece of foam in there or something that I can easily replace when I need to pop the hood.

It took driving in some odd positions to figure out where it was coming from. It didn't seem to start until after the first time I used the hood release.

Found the hood release cable problem already. It seemed like the problem was the cable inside would rattle against the sheathing, I rerouted it so it does not rattle. Dealership put some rope caulking behind the plastic trim around the window and the rattle is gone. Also had them fix the shifter solenoid lock. Their solution was to grease the actuator which pretty much fixed the rattle, will still get a little rattle if the bump is bad enough.

I have the same problem with the door rattle or popping when you hit bumps. I think its the plastic trim on the door that meets the weather stripping. If you crack the window just a little it will stop. IT drives me crazy but if you put a little wd-40 on the window edge it will stop it for a little while. So could be the window track since the wd-40 helps for a while. I was getting a squeaking from the door after I washed the truck the other day turned out to be the rubber strip at the top of the door where it meets the cab you can see it from the outside of the truck looking at the top door seam. I rubbed some wd-40 on it and it has stopped it. Have also had the squeaking from the door latches yep wd-40 stopped it. These trucks should come with a can of wd-40 in the glove box with a note saying apply as needed.

^I have the same rattle that goes away if I crack the window some. I already took my interior door panel off but didn't find anything rattling in there. However, I couldn't get further inside the door to access the window tracks without taking off this black membrane that is stuck onto to door with strong adhesive, and I didn't want to mess that up.

Is the plastic trim you guys are referring to on the inside or outside of the door?

My truck has always had a tapping noise around the top of the weather strip. I just stick my fingers in there for a second and it goes away.

It is the black trim on the inside that goes around the window frame. It covers the window frame from the window weatherstripping to the weatherstripping for the door. You can pull if out far enough to get something behind and stop the rattle.

^thanks, I'll try the rope caulking myself instead of going to the dealer.
