Maybe call a GM shop and ask what the labor time is for this standard job?

If you're the customer and looking to get the best deal you can call around and get estimates but when in business you really can't or at least shouldn't do that. On rare occasions I sometimes do that but I try to avoid it. They're in the business to make money, not tell other guys how much they should charge. I want to get a better labor guide but it's hard to tell which ones are good and which ones aren't just by looking at their websites.

If someone has a good "for pay" labor guide and really likes it I would love to hear a recommendation. I posted that question in a different topic and didn't get a reply.

Thanks Ryan, the middle one doesn't open, says access forbidden or something the last one I've seen, the first one I have not.

The free labor guides are usually...well, it's a get what you pay for kinda deal mostly. They may be pretty accurate but often they seem to only cover the generic stuff. Anything odd, like an engine oil pump on a 6.0, I haven't tried to look it up on the one you sent me but on the few I use NONE even had a listing for that.

There used to be a good "pay estimator" that was very comprehensive, really good but not the "Mercedes Benz" guide in terms of cost. I can't recall the name...seems like Miller rings a bell. Does that sound familiar to you? There are obviously really high end ones that I could never afford for my little operation. But I need something a little better than the free guides.

My dad has access to a gm program at work they use for manuals. I am thinking it is pretty pricey though

I don't know

I don't know either on a couple points.

You would be correct sir..I'm trying to remember the exact amount my mechanic was telling me but it was a fair chunk of change.

Yea, that's the issue Ryan, a high end program a dealership uses would be far more expensive than I could justify. What I don't know is if there more affordable ones are any better than the free ones.

That middle link you posted didn't open, is that a passworded guide?

I finally finished that damn truck and boy is that guy happy! We saved a motor he wanted me to scrap and put another used one in. I knew when I drove it home to the shop it just ran too damn good to be ready for the scrap heap, even with 275k on it. Now, with the fresh oil pump on it it's got 40+ psi at an idle and around 55+ at cruising speed. But he's happier than a pig in poop, that motor will probably last a long time I made a fairly decent payday on it.

I hated to change the heater core knowing it wasn't leaking. I told him he wasn't loosing pressure and no coolant was leaking, that it didn't need to be changed but he insisted his guy said, "he saw water on the floor one time and one time he didn't have heat". I told him that the water wasn't from the cooling system and the only reason he didn't have heat was because the coolant was low. He just said, "yea, do it anyway". LOL. What are ya gonna do, tell a buddy and a good customer "no, I refuse"? Of course not.

I'd like to do a write up, a "how to" kinda thing on both the heater core and the oil pump. How do I go about doing that? I don't have any photos of the process. It would just be instructions. I'm assuming it'll end up being a sticky.

Unless of course I've offended too many people with my comment. If the administrator/moderator doesn't want me to do a write up I won't. But I'd be more than happy to do so if it helps someone with this miserable pain in the ass of a heater core job and semi pain in the ass oil pump job. That's what these forums are intended for. The manuals don't get into the little odd things you run into during the process and you can't post a question to the person the wrote the manual. AND it appears that the person that writes manuals is not a mechanic. At least that's been my experience with repair manuals. Hanes manuals are the worst. They'll just say, "remove necessary components to access, heater core, replace core, reassemble." I'm like "no shit sherloc!" "thanks a effin bunch!" LOL

So as soon as someone tells me if they even want to me to write them up, I'll do so but I'll need to know where to put them.

Thanks again for the help,

There is a how to section in the technical forum area. This is for write ups on how to do certain tasks.
