Thinking about a Colorado

I've been debating downsizing to a crew colorado for better mpg. For anyone that went from a half ton to a colorado/canyon, do you regret it? I travel alot, so comfort is important. Any other things you like/dislike about the Colorado/Canyon?

I sat in a Canyon at the dealership once. Nice truck. Comfortable seats. Good ergonomics.

the one thing that bothers me is my legs are more straight out in front of me, whereas with my truck, My knees are bent and my legs are at a 90 degree angle . I like the seating position a lot better in the fullsize.

Try getting in and out of a Colorado that has running boards/tubes. Left edge of seat has a stiff vertical edge. Makes it difficult for me anyway. They are ok while sitting the seat.

My buddy special ordered one and it came in about a week ago. Its very nice. While driving, it felt more like a car to me than a truck (not necessarily a bad thing). And i couldn't help but notice how everything seemed like a baby silverado to me, for obvious reasons. All in all tho, if i were looking to downsize, this would be the one id buy vs the tacoma (which is basically your only other option in this class). But What killed me, is he paid close to what i did for his because gm really doesnt seem to move on the price because there aren't near as many as the silverados and are in high demand. I got over 10k off sticker for mine and they pretty much want sticker (or small rebates of around 500$- thousand or so)

Thanks for the info everyone. I guess I'm looking at mpg gains mainly, but seems I can get a 2015 half ton within 3k of a colorado. I'll probably look into the discounted 15 silverado.

I have 2015 Colorado Z71 with 3.6 engine. Best average MPG is 28.9 on a trip, my usual running around is close to 24. Not bad. The larger size console display is a great option! Hands free dialing through voice commands, the directions and navigation are better than my previous Tom-Tom and it is very comfortable and very quiet to ride/drive. Added the side running boards and makes it easy to get in and out without sliding off of the seat edge. Had a 2011 Sierra before and would not go back. OBTW the towing claims are for real as I just brought home a 24' Travel Trailer and no issues, handled the hills with ease.

Dbl cab rear is really tiny, but otherwise nice truck.

I'm about to do this very thing. I've test driven the Colorado. The fuel savings will be an added bonus.

I traded my 2015 z71 Colorado in on another Silverado crew cab within 9 months. Tired of ducking to get in and the lack of cab room.

Things I like better about my 2016 Colorado Z71 Crew Cab than my 2014 High Country...

1. More fun to drive (nimble)

2. Better Fuel Mileage

3. Apple Car Play

4. Automatic selector location

5. Ease of parking

6. Ease of backing up a trailer

7. $15,000 less

Of course there are limitation on size...the Silverado was cavernous, had cooled seats, power sliding back window, driver's seat memory. So far no regrets...especially with a 2016 Camaro SS. :)

I will give you No. 1, it is more nimble.

No. 2, I'm only getting about 2 mpg less in my new Silverado than I did in my Colorado.

No. 3, I have an android.

No. 4, I'm not sure I know what that means.

No. 5, I'll give you that one.

No. 6, I can't agree. The Colorado is narrower, I couldn't see around my travel trailer even with add on mirrors. The stock mirrors on my Silverado actually provide the same coverage as the Colorado did with the strap on towing mirrors. With the slide on additional mirrors I put on the Silverado I can see great now while towing.

No. 7, I paid $36,000 for my colorado in February. I paid $38,000 for my silverado a few weeks ago. Both are z71 4x4. Colorado was a crew cab, silverado is a double cab. What did I lose?

About 2 mpg empty. I expect my mpg on the silverado to get a little better as it's barely broken in.

Leatherette, whoopee, I hated those seats. Fake leather around the edges but still fabric where you sit.

The diminutive floor console with only 2 cupholders and the gear shift right in the way.

The useless angled cupholders in the door, never did figure out why they thought that was a good idea.

The one thing I did actually lose that I miss is heated seats. The Silverado they had and I liked doesn't have them. I decided I can get by without them.

What did I gain?

Integrated brake controller.

DIC controls on the steering wheel where I like them instead of on the turn signal stalk, easier to operate.

Volume and selector controls behind the steering wheel, easy to use.

Back up sensors.

Massive console space.

Another cupholder in the console and in the doors.

More storage in the doors.

Massive underseat storage under the console.

An extra glovebox.

2200 extra pounds of towing capacity.

A wider and longer bed.

A sliding back glass.

More back seat room for my lab, and no molded storage gizmo in the floor that he can't lay on when the seats are up.

I don't hit my head while getting into the silverado.

I'm getting an extra 2 mpg over the colorado when towing my travel trailer, it naturally gets up to speed easier and tows more stable and breaks faster. I expect my towing mileage to get even better as I've only made one 130 mile trip while towing the trailer and it was into a vicious head wind. Plus the truck only has 1,000 miles on it.

The Colorado is a nice truck but it was a failed experiment for me. If all I was doing was driving it to the golf course I might have kept it.

I forgot to mention the one thing I lost from the silverado when I traded for the colorado, then gained back when I got my new silverado.

Auto 4wd. My colorado only had 2wd and 4wd, no auto. I love auto, it's great for winter around here where you go from dry road to ice and snow and back again.

Auto 4wd is only available on the Canyon's the same as they did with the previous generation.

The one issue I had with my Colorado's was space. You have to take turns using the console arm rest with the passenger.

They were not good on long family camping trips or even just long road trips with a passenger.

We went through two Traverse's as I needed the cavernous space for my girls.

Now they have both gone off on there own I was ready to go back to a Truck and after two Colorado's I knew a full size was they way to go this time.

But it comes down to what you need.

If you don't mind cozy then you will be fine.

But the Sierra always goes on the long trips even though we have a smaller more fuel efficient SUV.

To be clear I'm not stating that the Colorado is a superior truck, just some areas I think it excels in. By selector I meant shifter...I like where it is as a rest for my hand. I also didn't realize some Colorados had stalk DIC controls, mine is on the wheel. Not your point it is a better fit for many. I'm sure that is why they make both. I'm loving mine!

I traded my 2011 GMC Sierra for the 2016 GMC Canyon. I have always had full sized trucks. I towed a boat, hauled Harleys and scooters and cut and hauled firewood. I do not tow trailers anymore but I still cut firewood and the 5-foot cargo box is sufficient. When I scraped the full sized truck against the gas grill trying to get it into my auxilliary garage by myself I knew it was time to downsize. The full sized trucks are just way too big for me now. I like the 2016 GMC Canyon.

The All-Terrain package was on my Sierra so I opted for it on my Canyon. I really enjoy driving my Canyon. My Sierra gave me 14-18 average mpg. The Canyon gives me 19-24 mpg. Both trucks in the 4x4 gas configuration. The Sierra had the powered sunroof. I never used it in the four years I owned it. I wouldn't have wanted one in the Canyon even if it was available. My Canyon has the sliding back glass window. They need to electric power it soon. My Canyon with the All-Terrain package does not have the heated outside rear mirrors. I miss that from my full sized truck. I also miss the turn signals in the outside mirrors and their power retractibility that was in the Sierra.

The Infotainment 8" media screen is outstanding. It has hands free callingI have used the GPS maps to guide me and the colors on the screen are vivid and the directions very accurate. The Apple CarPlay feature puts them on the Canyon's built in display. I get directions with Maps, make calls, send and receive messages and listen to my iPhone's music library. This is really a nice feature!

The 2016 Canyon's ride is firm and confortable. It has leather heated seats with power lumbar support. The seats heat up real quick in the winter.

I am very pleased with my 2016 GMC Canyon and highly recommend it.
