Try to Convince Me

Good Morning All,

To start off I've owned one vehicle in my life a 2003 Chevrolet S-10 Regular Cab 4.3 Auto. I love this truck and plan to never get rid of it.

All my life I always planned on buying a Tacoma but now that I am actually in the market we have the 2016. I've looked everywhere for a New 2015 which I knew was a lost cause and I don't want a used one as the resale is horrendous. I've always been split between GM and Toyota so when I started to look at the Colorado and Canyon I was exceptionally pleased.

The 2016 Tacoma I test drove I found it to be not that attractive, cramped inside, and just not like the prior generation (2nd) like my Dad has and I truly liked. The price wasn't attractive and I realized it wasn't for me the more I thought about that new Atkinson cycle engine.

So I began looking at Canyons... Loved them but then loved the look of the Colorado more. So I've been shopping around and I truly like the truck.

I was checking inventory at a local dealer and here comes a leftover Double Cab Silverado Double Cab LT in Ruby Red with the 4.3. Hmmm I thought I think I need to test drive this before I truly decide on the Colorado. I went to the dealer on Friday met with a salesman and he let me take a test drive by myself. He tells me where to go and I ended up putting 12 miles on the truck going through the town and on the Parkway.

Truck rode nice, shifted nice, had enough power. I felt like I was driving a smoother and larger big brother to my S-10 in a lot of ways.

So I honestly can say I loved the ride and if I was to start off a full size guy if the price was right. I would have bought that exact truck. So I get back to the dealership and go to park it and thats when I realize again one of the reasons why I don't want a full size truck.

So I went back in he told me the price would be $34,000 + Tax title, etc right off the bat then and there. I said I'd think about it then we went on to talk about Colorado prices and various other things about Colorados.

So we have the snow storm yesterday (blizzard whatever you want to call it) and I sit here thinking about my future truck purchase consistently. But I continue to think about the Silverado and how nice of a truck it was but then I like the Colorado too.

So now I'm somewhat debating the two models. I love the Colorado for its size but ultimately preferred the Silverado because I preferred the engine as well as I loved having a bench seat in the front vs. that center console in the Colorado. I trust the Silverados legendary performance but also trust the Colorado too.

The thing about the Silverado that deters me is the size and parking it. Will I get used to it? Am I just biased to the size of my S-10?

Try to convince me why the Silverado would be better for me compared to the Colorado.

You will get used to parking. Resale will be better on the full size. More room in the bed. More room in the back seat for friends. The new 4.3 is a pretty capable engine. Did it have the backup cam and heated seats like mine? I have a4.3 dbl cab I've got about 2200 miles on it now. Mine seems to shift a little funny but I came from a 05 superduty diesel. That I had forever.

That price is a very decent one if it's 4wd. Sticker should be around 42k.

What's the price of a Colorado? If you can be comfortable with the payment go bigger.

Hey Thanks for replying!

This one didn't have the backout cam or heated seats.

This one stickered at $38,900.

Without Tax and Dealer fees at this specific dealer:

This Silverado would be $34,000 even.(this was with rebates what they told me it would be I didn't even begin to haggle)

Exact Colorado I want would be $33,400

If I lived in an urban setting I wouldn't get a full size, but the backup camera and park assist make parking a lot easier than I thought it would be.

My problem is I hate the thought of door dings and it takes me forever to find a suitable spot.

Where I live is quite rural and I could drive a tractor trailer but as for when I go to "town" like the grocery store and so forth the spots are so stinking small it should be illegal.

Read your sentence again. Get exactly what you want....

Good luck.

Good luck mate.

IMO I think the Toyota trucks look awful.

I agree. I loved the look of every Tacoma made from the start of production until now. The 2016 is awful. When one zooms by I think thats ok looking but when its parked and you can actually look at it YUCK. I really hate how the TACOMA is embossed into the tailgate, on the Tundra it looks ok but it looks dumb on the Tacoma IMO.

My dad has been a loyal Toyota Truck driver since 1988. He saw his first 2016 a few years ago.. Between the look and how he doesn't trust the new engine he said looks like I'll be switching to a GMC Canyon when my '03 Tacoma dies.

You will get used to it... I came from a 2005 crew cab colorado to a double cab Z71 and quickly got used to the size... Backup camera helps a lot for backing into a spot.

My colorado was my first truck and i still have it too.... It is almost laying frame now as i have dropped it a lot. I leveled up the silverado with bugger tires and find myself very used to it and its been about 8months since i have had it.

I had the colorado since brand spankin new in 2005 so yes 10yrs of driving that and all of a sudden a full size. I like it a lot and am very happy with my decision. I dont regret it as i definitely do NOT like the new colorado/canyon so it was easy for me.

You will get used to it..... Get the truck you Really want. If you can afford it take the silverado is my personal opinion. But if you are happy with the colorado by all means buy that.

Go with the Silverado! I had 2 s-10's before I got my first full size truck. That was back in 06. Trust me once you get use to it you will never go back to a smaller truck.

IMO

They call them a truck because it has a bed, Colorado, Canyon, Toyota?, Nissasn?, Ranger, what ever model they are. Buy a full size TRUCK and enjoy. I rode in most small so called trucks and they made me feel like I was cramped.

Buy what suits your taste and your wallet but I would try a full size.

The most fun I had in a truck was a Toyota so long ago they weren't even named Tacoma or Tundra. It was simply the Toyota truck. :-) 5 speed manual and a bed big enough to haul my motorcycle, go camping, move myself and friends when needed, and just do whatever I wanted at the time.

My trucks have gotten bigger over the years, and now I'm in the Sierra. Now days it isn't as much fun to sleep on the ground so I haul a trailer around with everything including the kitchen sink.

Buy what fits your needs and makes you happy.

Actually resale will be better with the midsize due to the fact that GM isn't dropping a lot of rebate money on the hood. Notice 3 of the Top 5 vehicles with the best resale are midsize trucks with the Tundra just outside at #6. True that you can buy a comparable fullsize for the same price as a midsize. Basically OP will have to decide if it's worth the price to own a midsize.

My Dad had the Toyota Truck. It was an '88, his favorite vehicle ever. Was an auto but V6 4x4. I remember how depressed he was when he sold it after he bought his '03 but the rust was the problem there. He swears up and down he wont sell the '03 ever now.

I only tow a small landscape trailer so tow rating isn't needed for me. You guys are definitely starting to get my mind to churn!!

Parking does take some getting used to, even with the small bed. But it's like anything else, you'll learn and will figure out where and how to park in parking lots (not always a fun task) and tight spaces-for example I always back into my spot if possible....

I never drove a Colorado, but cant imagine getting one over a Silverado, especially if the prices are similar. And by the way if I read your post correctly, sticker is $38,900 and there offering it to you for $34,000? I think you can do better than that. Go to the "prices paid" thread and you'll see tons of posters getting 10-12K off sticker, including me.

Get the Silverado. That's a nice color and you'll love it. Oh, BTW, it is a 4WD, correct? I see you live in S. Jersey, I would not buy a 2WD in our area. Good luck.
