Putting in a heated steering wheel in '15 LT

I am wanting to know a little more about the clockspring wiring for my project. I need 2 -3 spare wires for adding steering wheel controls. The best I can tell is the data plug has 10 pins, it looks like 6 are used on my 16 WT and 7 are used on the wheel with the controls. I bought a damaged wheel for $60 that had the steering wheel controls. After tearing into the controls I have decided to just use the housing and I am making a custom circuit board with 7 buttons to fit the "factory" switch. I will be using a Pioneer stereo with the wired remote input and I have the resistor codes for the functions. I can make the 7 buttons on the wheel anything I want. I only need 2-3 (depending what functions I decide to use) wires going through the clockspring to send the signal to the radio. The controls will go directly to the radio and not through any of the truck computers. Reading this it seems if I change my ckockspring to the heated wheel model I will gain 2 direct wires. My question is are there unused wires in the 10pin plug? With this setup I will still have the factory wheel and will not have controls on the back of the wheel but can have vol up down mode seek phone answer disconnect. I also would like to add a led to my circuit board to have lights in my buttons and was wondering if I can tap the light circuit in the cruise button.

Wiring diagrams I have don't provide anything more than the circuits that do pass through, along with a pin-out, but that's it. You'd probably have to buy one and dissect it to reverse engineer for your purposes.

 

Can't speak to the light circuit. If possible, it ain't easy.

Thank you, that is what I was afraid of, that is what I did to figure out the radio controls. I've spent more money on less stuff before so why not. I will probably just buy a heated wheel clockspring because I know it has 2 extra wires so that will get me the main radio functions. The tip and sleeve of the 3.5mm input jack will give me most of the functions so the two wires will do what I was hoping. I will test the other circuits while I have it out and update what I found. Do you have the part # for the clockspring that is for heated wheel?

Do you have the diagram for the wiring in the clockspring? Is so can you share it?

I do not and can not. You may try pleading your case with a dealer or tech who does. Given the potential safety issues involved with futzing around with a component of the SRS system, I suspect you have a bit of work cut out for you.

Got ya, I understand. I basically need to know which of the wires in the 10 pin harness which is separate from the airbag wiring which wire is ground. With the heated wheel clockspring I will have the two extra wires I need I just need a ground. I am close to achieving my goal.

Update, I have not spent a lot of time but I did have a mechanic tell me the clockspring has all 10 circuits. I also have confirmed the iData link kit for my truck has the harness that will plug into the clockspring under the dash. It has all 10 wires so I can just tap into this harness and not the factory wires. This is also the same plug that fits the clockspring under the airbag so I can buy an extra kit and do the same at the wheel. All factory wires and plugs will be intact and I will have what I need to send the signal to the radio. I have a working button set that I will try and add the video.

Both clock springs do have all 10 wires. Only difference is if it has the heated wheel circuit or not.

Where could I purchase the heated steering wheel upgrade with clock spring and harness. I have a 2016 GMC Sierra 1500 SLE. Thanks for any help

got mine on gmpartsdirect. The sierra has alittle different silver trim shape than the silverado steering wheel and is about $30 more. could use either, but the sierra version would match the other trim on the dash as it is more of a brushed flat and the silverado wheel is more glossy.

    • No such thing as regenerative braking on a pure ICE vehicle.     Regenerative braking is the re-capture of energy from electric motors and stores it in the battery pack.  So hybrids, PHEV and EVs have regenerative braking.     What you are seeing is the charging system changing modes is all.  Its likely entering charge mode for some sort of reason is all.  All of the charging modes will be listed below.   As for L10 vs D.  L10 turns off automatic grade braking.  L10 puts you in control of grade downshifts where in D it will automatically do it based on brake pedal position and other factors.  Otherwise L10 and D drive exactly the same aside from that one aspect.    Battery Sulfation Mode The BCM will enter this mode when the interpreted Generator output voltage is less than 13.2 V for 45 minutes. When this condition exists the BCM will enter Charge Mode for 2–3 minutes. The BCM will then determine which mode to enter depending on voltage requirements.   Charge Mode The BCM will enter Charge Mode when ever one of the following conditions are met:   Windshield wipers are ON for more than 3 s. Climate Control Voltage Boost Mode Request is true, as sensed by the HVAC control module via serial data. High speed cooling fan, rear defogger, and HVAC high speed blower operation can cause the BCM to enter the Charge Mode. The estimated battery temperature is less than 0°C (32°F). Battery State of Charge is less than 80%. Vehicle speed is greater than 145 km/h (90 mph) A current sensor malfunction exists. System voltage is determined to be below 12.56 V When any one of these conditions is met, the system will set targeted generator output voltage to a charging voltage between 13.9–15.5 V, depending on the battery state of charge and estimated battery temperature.   Fuel Economy Mode The BCM will enter Fuel Economy Mode when the estimated battery temperature is at least 0°C (32°F) but less than or equal to 80°C (176°F), the calculated battery current is less than 15 A and greater than −8 A, and the battery state-of-charge is greater than or equal to 80%. Its targeted generator output voltage is the open circuit voltage of the battery and can be between 12.5–13.1 V. When fuel economy mode is active, the generator is not charging, only maintaining open circuit battery voltage. The BCM will exit this mode and enter Charge Mode when any of the conditions described above are present.   Headlamp Mode The BCM will enter Headlamp Mode when ever the head lamps are ON (high or low beams). Voltage will be regulated between 13.9–14.5 V.   Start Up Mode When the engine is started the BCM sets a targeted generator output voltage of 14.5 V for 30 s.   Tow/Haul Mode (if applicable) Pressing the Tow/Haul Mode button located on the center stack, the vehicle system voltage is raised and the remote (non-vehicle) battery will be charged. Having the headlamps on will raise the system voltage and if the Tow/Haul button is applied it will not serve any purpose. The voltage is regulated between 13.9-14.5 V.      
    • Hello from Australia Just sharing that there is now a way to delete the active shutters entirely with just a plug in module. Opens up tons of room to light bars etc.
    • I have an observation and a question... 1) I watch the voltage closely because I have had to dial in the cut-in/cut-out voltages of the battery separator to my camper.  The "smart" charging drives me nuts.  Anyway, I noticed that when coasting for a while, and especially if lightly using the brakes (though not necessary), the voltage goes up from mid/high-13 volts to mid/high-14 volts.  Then it drops back down after stopping or going again.  Consistently!   The only explanation I can come up with is REGENERATIVE BRAKING!  Well, maybe that's a little bit of an exaggeration, but it's certainly free extra battery charging.   2) Driving on mountain roads I will use L and vary the max gear.  Things straighten out and I end up in L10.  Sometimes I leave it there for a while.  Is there any difference between L10 and D?   
    • Do you think this width might affect the chalk test with a higher pressure closer to 65psi? I think lowering the pressure makes sense to get the tread to lay flatter
