Complete LED replacement

Hello all!

I'm looking at doing a complete LED replacement on my truck. I have the LTZ with projectors also. I want to replace headlights, taillights, and license plate bulbs, and idk if it's possible but also the power mirror lights to all be the same color LED. I've seen the whole HID/LED thread and there is a ton of information on there but not any specific brands to buy or anything. I don't really know why I would replace the projectors in my LTZ with the FR ones either since I don't do a lot of off-roading at all. So my questions are these:

1. What would you suggest brand wise for high output WHITE LED? (No real blue tint)

2. Has anyone color matched them all?

3. Any real reason to switch out my projectors?

4. Looked at opt7 for LED headlights. Any experience?

5. For headlights is it better to go with HID or LED for light output?

Thanks a ton in advance!!

I have VLED license plate lights, reverse lights and cargo lights and they are bright as hell! only downside is due to the lenses it gives off a zebra striped light output, but still bright. there is a sticky in the modifications sub-forum that discusses all this.

The reason to switch out the projectors are the stock factory ones are designed for halogen bulbs, not HID. They will have a lot of light scatter and possibly blind on coming traffic. There is a company that offers an adapter plate with the FXR projector that will fit without any modifications to the old housing, basically remove the 4 screws holding the old projector in, install the adapter plate, and the new projector wire up your HID's readjust your lights and your done. You will end up with a nice sharp cut off line that won't blind on coming traffic and will allow you to see a lot better than the factory system could.

Many of us have done reverse lights and cargo lights with Philips 921 bulbs and they are absolutely amazing.

I was going to switch out my taillights with LEDs but after reading several threads and websites and user reviews, I decided it's not worth it. You don't gain any real additional brightness, just the instant on feature. The way the taillights are designed I guess, there isn't much difference with LEDs regarding light output and also you have to do resistors to avoid dash warning and hyperflash.

License plate bulbs: http://smile.amazon.com/Philips-Bright-White-Interior-Vision/dp/B017VORB7M/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1457887634&sr=8-1&keywords=philips+194

The puddle lamps in the bottom of the mirror are already LED and as white as they are going to get.

I trust Philips much more than Putco. Putco is just an accessory company who makes a lot of chrome stuff and also some light bulbs. Philips is an old company and built an entire business on light bulbs of all kinds so they get my vote.

I am also considering this LED tailgate light bar. It's a popular one and seems to have good reviews and works well and it's not too expensive and easy to install.

Which sticky is that?

Can you link it?

Go to the VLED website, I switched out all my lights except the headlights with VLED.... good quality & bright.

I'm also interested in doing this. Following this post!

JRaschke11, I've got that light bar and it has great output in both brake/turn and reverse. Get it with a Curt T connector to wire it behind the bumper, and it is a very nice setup.

AaronIROCZ do you happen to know what company makes the HID adapter plate?

www.fastheadlights.com I have never used them so I do not know anything about them, I used www.theretrofitsource.com and got the FXR kit with the 35w ballasts for my old 2014, I redrilled holes in the projector housings to get them to fit, but the adapter plate looks to make the install a lot easier.

^Might answer some headlight questions on HID/LED.

My setup-

Cargo: JDM A-Stars (Amazon)

Backup: Got them from Ebay from someone who had good results in the thread whitestallion posted.

License Plate: VLED

All over the board but they all match, super bright and have lasted thus far so no complaints. Tried a couple different ones for each and found the best results with these.

    • Thanks @newdude, guess I'll keep looking.  Test driving so many trucks that have obvious things broken, I'm thinking "if they couldn't even be bothered to fix the power seat," what else is broken".   Just drove a 2021 where the power seat motor was grinding/binding and wouldn't do anything but make a terrible sound.   An owner that puts dents on the bumper, doesn't fix a seat motor, and had spotty service intervals (along with missing major services) doesn't give me the best of confidence.   Amazed at the number of people that will finance a $60k+ truck, run it into the ground, then trade with a loan balance (every single one had "loan/lien reported" on the CARFAX at the last year of registration).
    • Not true! I have been runing them since 2006 F250! suspension component that works as a sway bar, a traction bar, and a helper spring points directly to the RoadActive Suspension (RAS) kit. Works as a sway bar, a traction bar, and a helper spring.
    • Here's a starter kit:    CC Jensen, a Danish oil testing Concern gives us the following guidelines:   ISO 14/12/10 Very Clean Oil ISO 16/14/11 Clean Oil ISO 17/15/12 Lightly Contaminated ISO 19/17/14 New Oil ISO 22/20/17 Very Contaminated and not suitable for any service.   In addition CC Jensen gives a table showing how engine life is increased by cleaning up the oil. For example cleaning the oil from 19/17/14 to 13/11/8 will extend motor life by a factor of 6X.   But even cleaning it two “Life Extension Classes” will double motor life. So perhaps giving those classes would be useful:   21/19/16 20/18/15 19/17/14 18/16/13 17/15/12 16/14/11 15/13/10 14/12/9 13/11/8   *************************************   https://testoil.com/program-management/setting-iso-cleanliness-targets/   Third paragraph from the bottom will give a starting point.    Your next question should be, okay 10um at what Beta ratio and the answer is in the graph Beta 75.   Then the next question is what is your chosen filters profile? (Purolator PL series below) The red dot is Beta 75. This was the information I obtained from MANN a few years ago. So the best filters, Purolator One, AMSOIL EA, FRAM Ultra, Royal Purple, Bosch Premium should get a doubling engine life over filters like Purolator L, any service filter from any quick lube, WIX, NAPA, STP, Mobil 1, Purolator BOSS.    And as noted by CC Jensen a 2-5 micron @ Beta 200 bypass system has the capability of a six fold improvement. AMSOIL has such a system as does Donaldson.       Now having said all that testing is the touchstone. Test the oil NEW and test it with your chosen filter. Then test over milage. Do the work, get the result. But understand this in NOT absolute BECAUSE this is one factor in isolation.   Example:    A valve spring supplier can state that with cam X and a valve train of Y grams the valves will not float to 7K rpm. is that true if the builder choose a system 20 grams over limit? Common sense must be used and limits understood.
    • This doesn't look like a GM truck. Not needed on a HD truck
    • It varies a ton around me. Some places are still at $5.00 or higher and others are way down into the $4's.   Offroad diesel was $4.02 at the one station I passed today.
