Do you take a hit with the mpg?

The usual outcome around here is: the mileage takes a huge hit with a new exhaust, due to the added weight of the driver's right foot. Same thing applies for a tune and any other "performance" modification. LOL

But seriously... in theory, lower exhaust backpressure can have a positive effect on mileage, when engine tuning is adjusted appropriately.

The real benefit of a tune is not necessarily the peak dyno horsepower increase, but rather the lower rpm benefits, where the ECM torque management limits the available horsepower to a schedule. Nearly all custom tunes remove some or all of the torque management schedule. This makes the truck more peppy down in the lower rpm range in real everyday driving situations, which is really what most of us need. This is sometimes referred to as "horsepower under the curve". (when you look at a dyno run chart with a plot of the horsepower vs RPM, it's shown as a curved line. Removing torque management will allow for more horsepower at the lower RPM range.)
