Ok so long story short.

I don't tow much but now find the need for a travel trailer as i am more and more finding it harder to find decent places to live when getting shipped off all over the US for work.

I want a small travel trailer.... Not too small but i dont need a 30ft with pop outs or whatever. Its just me and maybe my girl if i can ever convince her to quit her job and tag along to pamper me haha.

I have a 2014 silverado 1500 double cab with the 3.08 rear end, i do plan on upgrading to 4.10s front and rear later on but right now thats what I have.

I don't know where to look, start, or even what to do.

Please someone educate me :)

3.08 rear end will tow fine for lower trailer weights. You'll give up some fuel economy, but should have NO issue towing anything up to about 4000lbs or even a bit more. As you get closer to the max tow limit for your truck, it will work harder and harder to maintain speed, climb hills, accelerate, etc. The larger gears will help you when you tow to drag heavier trailers, but you're going to sacrifice fuel economy when you aren't towing.

I would suggest that you try to get a really solid feel of what kind of weight you'll be towing before you worry about how well it will tow and whether you need to consider changing out the gears.

Gears are more for the "go faster" itch but nit necessary.

I have towed before but its always been smaller trailers and maybe i have done a 3Klb trailer with this truck. Again towing noob to the weights and propper way to tow and all that.

Im very comfortable with hauling something just want to make sure its within safe guidelines as i could be going anywhere in the US.

So something thats in the 4K lb range wouldn't be too hard on the truck?

Your specific truck will have its max rating for GVWR, GTWR, and GCWR on a label in the door frame. Those numbers are based 100% on the build for your truck, including the gear ratios. If what you're intending to tow is within all of those ratings, you're good to go.

Be advised that if you end up wanting to tow a trailer that EXCEEDS those numbers, you can make changes like you suggested for the gears, but your truck will NEVER be able to be certified to tow those heavier weights according to DOT / GM.

Got it.

Whats a good travel trailer to look for? As long as its in the low 20s i dont want to finance much more then that but if its worth it il consider it.

What do i look for and all that jazz on trailers?

To increase your number and quality of replies it's always best to use a more detailed title for each thread. Even something simple for this thread could be "Small travel trailer suggestions for my 2014 Silverado"

There is a GVWR sticker and a Payload/tire sticker. GTWR and GCWR numbers do not appear on any sticker on any part of the vehicle. If somebody wanted to hassle him they'd need to look in the owners manual....

Bought used and didn't have a manual :(

I'm partial to Airstreams. They tow great. Not the cheapest option though.

They are truly one of the best made and longest lasting trailers too... not to mention usually pretty light too.

Since you're not picky, buy used and save lots of cash. Plenty of people "plan" to camp and never do. 22' strikes me as a nice size...

RV trader.com is a good place to look new or used, with what your wanting & being an avid TT owner pulling a 32' Laredo with an HD, maybe look into a Jayco, Jay flight in the 22'-24' range we had a good used one a few yrs. back pulling it with my 1500 5.3 & 3;08s I think we paid in the mid-high teens for it out the door. Good luck in your search.

I have been looking at the Jayco's and man they are nice. I do have acess to a large RV lot back home so I will look at them in person.

Being that i will be using it to live while working i want something well equipped and preferably new since it will be where i rest while i make the bacon. To be honest i work an avg of 80 to 90 hrs a week and want something comfortable to just go and get a good rest, cook a good meal and kick back and watch a movie or 2 and go to bed.

Also.... What does "this unit is winterized" mean??

Gimic or is their actual heated plumbing tubing? Good to know since last job was in North Dakota during the winter. Now am blessed with working in Texas but still.

    • I've installed cheap eBay new aftermarket digitizers before.  They work.  Did a bunch of Cadillac CUE (aka Cadillac's MyLink) for someone years ago.  They all worked fine after the repair.    That number 22740886, that is a component part # for GM.  You can use it to search, but its not something that's obtainable at the dealer level.     So pretty much any of these will work - 2015 Colorado Digitizer for sale | eBay

    • You can install tailpipes that direct the exhaust sideways vs the OEM one that goes straight back. There are several on the market, do you own research. HOWEVER, you need to make sure the Venturi vents are still intact, otherwise it will throw a engine code. There is a sensor somewhere that detects back pressure on the exhaust. And if it doesn't collect the correct metrics, it will throw the truck into limp mode.
    • "Teardown" is complete. Head surfaces are clean and ready, new intake is prepped and ready. Coolant drained and water pump is removed, radiator is removed, new hoses and pump are ready.   The replacement intake is also from a '95 (with I think 260k, the odometer said). Noticeably less pitting where it covers the rear coolant passages. I'm not sure if that's a tribute to more frequent use, more frequent coolant changes/upkeep, or if the intake was machined at some point. But it appears I found a good one.   My coolant hoses were original, and the lower hose still retained the factory spring inside. It's not really rusty, but it's got deposits all over it. Unsure if I should re-install it (will thoroughly clean it first). Someone said hose technology has gotten better since 1995 (has it?) and I don't need the spring. I think modern EPDM is what made those hoses last from 1995-2026, so it's a question of how much suction can the water pump really pull, and will it collapse the hose without a spring?   I'm stopped and waiting for parts, however.   When I first brought the truck home, the fan was intermittently hitting the radiator shroud. I could see someone had monkeyed with the shroud (put a bunch of cardboard as a spacer between the upper/lower shroud halves. Someone said the motor mounts have likely failed and the engine has sagged. I wasn't sure I believed that. The engine is really solid in its mounts: To remove the old intake I *just* nearly permanently welded to the heads with freshly cured RTV and gasket snot two weeks ago, I literally had to use the arms on my lift and a chain with a bolt attached to the intake to pull it loose. It almost picked the front of the truck off the ground before ....scuuuuuuuuuuup.... I could actually hear the gaskets tearing and it broke loose and the whole truck settled back down. Motor barely moved.   SO, those parts I'm waiting on... The lower radiator mounts/bushings had completely failed. The radiator needs to be insulated from the rad support, and the bushings help the rad stand at the correct height. The plastic "baffle" was also destroyed at some point. Someone had attached the shroud to it incorrectly, overlapping a joint that should have been underlapped, creating another suspect issue potentially causing things to hit the fan. Broken tabs, side is busted off, and it's perma-formed/bent where it was jimmied incorrectly.   The baffle? Unobtainum. Long since discontinued from GM, of course. Aftermarket/capa/chinese? Also unobtanium. In GM's infinite wisdom, it appears there are at least two different variations whether the Blazer is 2 or 4 door, and I can't yet tell if they shared the same part with the S-pickups. Plan B, if I can't find a viable used one, will be to create a bracket to re-assemble the critical joint I need to seal a gap with the shroud. But that will bug me, it won't be...perfect.   The water pump bolts appear to have been installed with...plumber's putty. I guess, sure, if it works...? I've found a few "backyard fixes" like that. Someone's been here before....   If I can't find someone to jam bamboo under my fingernails to fill my free time this week I think I'll install the driver's power window motor and replace the rear door speaker that's inop. I've got a genuine GM "9.5" ohm working replacement. Why GM used a non-standard resistance....nevermind. Of course they did, you can get more sound from a cheap factory amp that way.   And the saga goes on...
