275/55/20 vs 285/55/20 tires

The 275 is a factory size tire, the 285 is going to be wider and taller. 285 is tread width and the 55 means 55 percent of 285mm is the sidewall height

I run a Pro Comp 295/55R20 (they call it a 33x12.5R20 but its slightly smaller) I have a slight rub on my gatorback flap at full lock when the suspension travels. I can fix it with a tie back but I rarely rub it so i havent bothered yet. My buddy runs a 305/55R20 BFG AT's with molded mud flaps and he doesn't rub at all. It all depends on your wheel offset. Both our stock 20's have a +26 and leaves me no where near my control arm or sway bar like everyone else says. You will have no issue running either of your selected tires. You will notice a decrease in power and fuel economy with a wider taller tire. My E load Pro Comps are 35lbs heavier per tire than the passenger car rated Wrangler SRA's it came with. My bud and I are both running R.L. 2 1/4" front and 3" blocks in the rear. You wont need either to clear a 285. Here is a link I used to get a rough idea: https://tiresize.com/comparison/. Note that aggressive sidewalls and raised lettering will make a tire wider than its advertised width, all tires from different brands with have differences in actual geometry. I've got the 2.5" Ready Lift and run 275/65-20 BFG KO2's. No issues.

Be sure to look at the ACTUAL TIRE SIZE, each brand differes in actual size. I use tireracks website to see actual specs for each tire.

285-55-20 all the way!

I've had both. They are pretty close. The 285's are 10mm wider and about 0.4" taller. Not really a substantial increase over stock.

I had 285's when I had Cooper tires. But I traded the coopers for BFG's and went back to OEM 275's. I can't really tell the difference.

Is it possible to run these size wheels and tires without a leveling kit ?

Yes, you can fit 285/55/20 without any suspension mods. And, in my opinion, they'll look better than the 275's.

Going from stock 275's to a 285 or 295 all terrain won't make much difference. Running something like a 305 mud tire will be noticeable.

I'm running 295/55/R20's with 0 Offset rims. No rubbing. 2.5" Level though
