I hope it is for all of you, if so I have no clue what is going on with mine and I am quite upset since a three month old truck with a sticker north of 56k and not even 8500 miles. I would be concerned with all the trucks and the vast mileage range this is popping up at, it could be some bring it back in ever 10-50 thousand miles for the same issue and just wait till it happens again out of warranty.  $$$$$$$$

Mines been happening since month 8 of ownership. I’ve had all my AFM collapsible  lifters replaced. Sorry guys but it didn’t change a thing.

i have 70,000km on it now and it’s 2.5 years old. It’ll be driven til it’s sold like this. It’s not worth wasting anymore time.

It crazy to me how you hear about this on here all the time. I know 4 people with these trucks with lots of miles,all stock and 0 issues.

When I get it back, I'll report my findings. When it gets out of warranty, I intend to do a cam and a true DOD/AFM delete. I'll report on that too

I just stumbled across a response that seems like there could be some logic to...

 

After numerous rides to the dealer and talking to several techs, one answer finally made sense. The valve package of the transmission is located on the drivers side. These 6-speeds are super smart, and when the truck is under lightacceleration, in a high gear like 6th, basically lugging, the transmission starts to preload the gears for optimal gearsection. You can hear right before the shift the clicking of the solenoid valves in the transmission. It is completely normal.

 

 

I've always thought that there seemed to be a correlation between the ticking and the tranny. It seems like it’s in the drivetrain and not so much the motor because it doesn’t do it when you rev the engine and it directly correlates with the RPMs.

Very interesting.. my transmission makes a weird sound if I give it gas as it’s down shifting between 2-1, it’s not a clunky sound it’s a weird frog kind of sound, hard to explain. Mine is a 5.3 8 speed but it definitely makes a weird noise. Also makes sense that bumps effect it making noise or not. Also never makes a tick sound during idle, only in drive

That's the decision I came to also, my truck runs fine. Just has the annoying tick, but as long as it keeps running good I'm just gonna drive it until I trade it in.

Well I got the truck back today and they claimed nothing was wrong just an extra half a quart of oil no gas smell.... The two techs that diagnosed and originally took it in ran away and didn't come out till I was leaving, they changed the oil and said bring it back in a thousand miles and they will look it over again. The lady tried to tell me gas and oil also smell the same..... they brushed me off like nothing. Awesome to see how amazing GM customer service is.

Welp, new cylinder head is on. It still makes the ticking. The dealer tried to blame it on the small exhaust leak I have with the car back I have. I’m fixing that today and then the service manager and I are going to do a drive together.

Julianne, I have the same issue, i thought it was an exhaust leak and the dealer agreed, they replace the caskets between the manifold and the cat converter on both sides, (classic chevy Beaumont) this did not fix the issue.  what do you suggest .

Starting to think packerchev is on to something and this could be the transmission possibly making this sound. Members have been going to great lengths with the motor and other motor accessories being replaced and it did not resolve the issue. The transmissions in these trucks have had tons of issues so it wouldn’t surprise me.

Just another person chiming in. 

No audible ticking at idle outside of normal valve sounds.  When cruising around 45-50 MPH and above, what sounds like an exhaust leak is heard from driver's footwell.  Seems louder in 4cyl operation than 8cyl.  Seems to be either more quiet or plain non-existent when ambient temp is cold.  I noticed it when on a road trip with three people in the cab, and the truck had 750 miles on it.

I haven't tested it with a trailer yet, but now have 2300 miles on the truck and it persists.  No unusual transmission behavior, just the usual hesitation when reactivating the other 4cyl and dropping gears during acceleration (seems like a 185 operating temp is norm). 

Oil pressure ranges between 38-42 regardless of situation.

Nothing like the loud clacking at idle as seen on youtube videos.  I swear I heard it get louder when driving in inside lane next to barriers, but traffic was heavy and can't confirm.  

 

I'm going to haul a little trailer around with some extra folks in the car to prove it's load-dependent.   Either way, truck runs fine.  I know it's not a helpful post...sorry.

welcome to the club.. I noticed mine early on like you about 500 miles on my first highway road trip over the summer. Towed my snowmobile trailer this winter (about 400 mile highway trips) a few times with about 5k on the truck and it still made the same "exhaust leak" like sound from the drivers footwell. It seemed a little more intermittent in the winter but was definitely still the same sound.

    • Common failure.  You need to replace the fuel door housing.   The painted cover transfers over to the new housing.  To remove the old one there is 4 spots where you poke the plastic to release it.  
    • No such thing as regenerative braking on a pure ICE vehicle.     Regenerative braking is the re-capture of energy from electric motors and stores it in the battery pack.  So hybrids, PHEV and EVs have regenerative braking.     What you are seeing is the charging system changing modes is all.  Its likely entering charge mode for some sort of reason is all.  All of the charging modes will be listed below.   As for L10 vs D.  L10 turns off automatic grade braking.  L10 puts you in control of grade downshifts where in D it will automatically do it based on brake pedal position and other factors.  Otherwise L10 and D drive exactly the same aside from that one aspect.    Battery Sulfation Mode The BCM will enter this mode when the interpreted Generator output voltage is less than 13.2 V for 45 minutes. When this condition exists the BCM will enter Charge Mode for 2–3 minutes. The BCM will then determine which mode to enter depending on voltage requirements.   Charge Mode The BCM will enter Charge Mode when ever one of the following conditions are met:   Windshield wipers are ON for more than 3 s. Climate Control Voltage Boost Mode Request is true, as sensed by the HVAC control module via serial data. High speed cooling fan, rear defogger, and HVAC high speed blower operation can cause the BCM to enter the Charge Mode. The estimated battery temperature is less than 0°C (32°F). Battery State of Charge is less than 80%. Vehicle speed is greater than 145 km/h (90 mph) A current sensor malfunction exists. System voltage is determined to be below 12.56 V When any one of these conditions is met, the system will set targeted generator output voltage to a charging voltage between 13.9–15.5 V, depending on the battery state of charge and estimated battery temperature.   Fuel Economy Mode The BCM will enter Fuel Economy Mode when the estimated battery temperature is at least 0°C (32°F) but less than or equal to 80°C (176°F), the calculated battery current is less than 15 A and greater than −8 A, and the battery state-of-charge is greater than or equal to 80%. Its targeted generator output voltage is the open circuit voltage of the battery and can be between 12.5–13.1 V. When fuel economy mode is active, the generator is not charging, only maintaining open circuit battery voltage. The BCM will exit this mode and enter Charge Mode when any of the conditions described above are present.   Headlamp Mode The BCM will enter Headlamp Mode when ever the head lamps are ON (high or low beams). Voltage will be regulated between 13.9–14.5 V.   Start Up Mode When the engine is started the BCM sets a targeted generator output voltage of 14.5 V for 30 s.   Tow/Haul Mode (if applicable) Pressing the Tow/Haul Mode button located on the center stack, the vehicle system voltage is raised and the remote (non-vehicle) battery will be charged. Having the headlamps on will raise the system voltage and if the Tow/Haul button is applied it will not serve any purpose. The voltage is regulated between 13.9-14.5 V.      
    • Hello from Australia Just sharing that there is now a way to delete the active shutters entirely with just a plug in module. Opens up tons of room to light bars etc.
    • I have an observation and a question... 1) I watch the voltage closely because I have had to dial in the cut-in/cut-out voltages of the battery separator to my camper.  The "smart" charging drives me nuts.  Anyway, I noticed that when coasting for a while, and especially if lightly using the brakes (though not necessary), the voltage goes up from mid/high-13 volts to mid/high-14 volts.  Then it drops back down after stopping or going again.  Consistently!   The only explanation I can come up with is REGENERATIVE BRAKING!  Well, maybe that's a little bit of an exaggeration, but it's certainly free extra battery charging.   2) Driving on mountain roads I will use L and vary the max gear.  Things straighten out and I end up in L10.  Sometimes I leave it there for a while.  Is there any difference between L10 and D?
