Apple CarPlay/Android Auto. A deal breaker?

Recommended Posts

I'm ready to pull the trigger on a truck. One of my options is an aggressively priced Silverado with "Apple CarPlay Android Auto not available". Savings of a whopping $200.

I don't even know what this feature is. Should it be a deal breaker? Maybe that's why the price is so good?

do you have a Iphone or an Android phone?

Aggressively priced ~ Savings of a whopping $200? I'm not quite following what's happening here. From what I hear the carplay feature is really nice but I would not consider it a must have.

Sorry. They have one without CarPlay for a great price. The sticker is only $200 less but they've got a fat discount on it.

They basically ran out of Carplay/Andriod Auto head units for a while and had to put 2015 head units in some 2016 trucks. They are discounting sticker price $200 for the inconvenience. It is going to be a preference thing to make your decision.

For me, trading in my 2014 silverado for a 2016, I did it because the front end looks so much better than my 14, it has leather seats, it is 4x4 and it had Carplay. But I am a tech guy, so just a preference thing. I personally love carplay and use it everytime I am in the car for messages being read to me, dictating new messages to people, apple maps. Which is much better than the built in navigation in my opinion. You don't ever have to pay for map upgrades for sure. Pandora, and many other audio apps.

To counter that a little, I rarely use my apply play I just connect via wifi. It will read my texts to me but I can't dictate them. I think you can use the phones navigation and hear the prompts but not see the road.

If I am on wifi I can call up Siri via the steering wheel talk button. I assume that would be gone too.

See if it has the projection feature which puts some items up on the screen if the phone is plugged in. This may not be included in your discounted version. Sit in one with Apple play and and yours and see if you are missing anything you have to have

In my opinion Android Auto and Apple Car Play are simply technology for technology sake. I think most owners want it for the free navigation. Although techincally, it isn't. You have to pay for the data required to use the navigation. Beyond that the only thing that it offers that the earlier Mylink/Intellilink didn't was the ability to project and access the apps from your phone on the infotainment screen. Frankly, I think the roads are dangerous enough without having drivers playing with their apps while trying to negotiate a vehicle through traffic. I'm sure that a lot of owners will consider AA/ACP a must have but I don't consider it anything close to a deal breaker. Technology moves so fast today that probably the next generation of vehicles will be offering technology that will make AA/ACP look stone age. Why do we need phones at all? Just build an iPad into the infotainment center and skip the middle man. Could happen. Keep in mind, vehicle manufacturers are under pressure to make the newest generation the "latest and greatest" to maintain sales. They aren't concerned about the true value of the changes they make. The just want to hang the shiny thing in the window to attract consumers to their product. Look how many of the forum members went wild and, in some cases, actually traded their '14s and '15s in just because of the grille changes to the '16s.

2 sided coin!

You can always add it from MVI (vender on here for the updated parts) its a bit more expensive than $200. (These guys can do other things as well to the HMI unit and Nav)

I like driving to a local dealer for updates and warranty issues and not shipping my HMI unit out for updates to 3rd party.

I really enjoy my Apple Car Play, SQ is much improved even over HD radio when using the USB and since I am user since the 3g days I have loads of music, totally worth it IMO! got the android update so my buddies could see how it works, not as refined as Apple Car Play you have do download an app on your android phone and then agree and then connect, but its basically the same for both.

The point is, if you didn't know what it was before, you probly won't miss not having it.

If you already know how to get from your house, to work, to the liquor store without a map, then 90% of the time you wouldn't even need the navigation function. I just use Google maps on my phone when i need to find somewhere new.

Like others have said, if its something you really want, you can get it by waiting for the newer trucks, or paying for aftermarket.

The thing is if you wanted to buy this at a later date you would need a new unit and it would cost 1k. Personally I can live with or without, the thing is they would have to give a better discount than 200 for it. If you have two identical trucks and one with and one without, you are better off having the feature.

I have it on my '16, didnt have it on my '15. I could still do texts through siri with the '15, use apple maps to play audio through the radio with HFP prompts (have to look at the phone screen for visual) via bluetooth. Carplay/AA the phone has to be plugged in to work, its kinda cool but I buy a truck for the truck, not phone capability.

I'm two weeks into owning a '16 and the novelty and ease using text and podcasts is pretty cool. My last vehicle had comparable (but not quite as slick) phone integration, so I call that a wash.

If I could get a roaring deal on a truck that didn't have ACP but had everything else and I wasn't already a proficient user dependent on it, I wouldn't hesitate to take the better deal.

Your phone has to be connected by usb for AA or CP to work.

Your phone can still connect to the truck using BT, but AA and CP require a wired connection.

Usually I can't be bothered to plug my android phone in.

I agree completely. To only discount $200 for this year's hot ticket is a little out of line. You might want to discuss a few dealer add ons and then close the deal.
