Whats Your AC Vent Temperature??

Out of curiosity I keep a cooking thermometer in the vent of my 2014 Silverado. I keep my temperature setting at 72 to 74 degrees. My vent temp usually runs around 50 degrees. What kind of temp are you guys seeing?

Usually 43.5-45. I have a digital thermometer. Thats in 95F plus south Texas heat. Good AC, much better than my 2009 Avalanche.

Cabin (mixed) temp is not supply air temp. You keep the thermostat at your house at X*F (70-75*F?) in the summer but the registers in your house are blowing air at a much cooler temp if everything's working right.

 

Yes? I'm certainly not a vehicle HVAC expert.

Idling no rec it's 73 turned full blast. At speed it will drop to 64. With rec turned on its 51 and at speed mid 40's. Taking it in this week because that seems crazy to me. 73 without rec turned on? Anybody else?

I am also no expert on HVAC, but I believe a condenser in a vehicle can only cool air by about 20 degrees (or so). If its 105 outside, it will be blowing 85 through the vents (roughly). Now when you run it on recirculate and the cabin is cooled down, then the air it blows out gets much cooler.

 

I'm glad that in my neck of the woods, 85 is a hot day. My AC sure cools the truck down fast when driving. My truck has the best AC of any vehicle I have ever owned before.

It was reading 102*F on the way home from Orange Beach, AL yesterday. Interstate but large runs of much lower/slower speeds because of traffic (Mobile Bay tunnel lead up for instance).

 

Didn't have a read on the supply temp but did have recirc on and even when the sun was in my lap, I was very comfortable. 25-33% fan speed est.

I was watching it today. Outside temp in the mid to upper 90's.

 

It is the automatic version. I have the temp set to "LO" and operate the fan and recirc manually.

 

Hot interior after sitting in the sun:

Idle, recirc off: ~70F

Idle recirc on: ~60F

 

Cool interior after A/C has been running for a while:

Highway travel, recirc on: 45F

Highway travel, recirc off: 50F

Idle, recirc on, ~50F

Idle, recirc off: ~55F

 

I'm not impressed. It is not as good as my last two Silverado's (2009 and 2010) which would run about 10F cooler. It does put out a lot of air though, so it's really not too bad, just not as good. I'm usually in shorts, so I'm ok, but if I was in a business suit, I would be sweating. I suspect the A/C is designed for maximum fuel economy just like everything else on the truck. It is always in recirc mode if left on "automatic" control. I hate recirc because it is so loud.

 

The compressor is noisy too. Makes a whirring sound. I wonder how long it will last.

I'm gonna have to check mine. Even on the 90+ muggy days keeping it at 70 on auto is actually comfortable and it cools pretty fast.

 

I also have tints all the way around which imo makes a fair impact to how hard the AC has to work.

Haha I have limo ceramic all the way around and even then non rec isn't an option. I just can't imagine that it blowing mid 70's at idle on a hot day is what it's designed to do.

Did you ever take your truck in to have the ac checked, I live in the central Valley 100+ summers and I don't think the ac is up to snuff even when it's 85 out . My girl friends jag turns into an ice box in the same temps seems like the truck struggles to stay cool

I think most vehicles are still using the R134A if I am not mistaken? Looking at a Pressure/Temperature chart for R134A Typically an automotive type system will run in mid to high 30's PSI pressure on the low side so the evaporator refrigerant temp translates to the low 40's this usually translates to a low to mid 50f air temp at the vent exit into the vehicle if the system is working correctly. A common problem in the past has been the mixing door on automotive systems your HVAC case contains both a heat and a AC coil and the mixing door controls the temp. If it is NOT moving and closing and sealing completely that could be your problem. To test I would find a place where it is as quiet as possible and run normally for a while and then stroke the system from heat to cool a few times. Listen closely for any clicks or strange noises, the door actuator gears are simply plastic and can strip easily you might help your dealership pinpoint the problem quickly plus you might find that the door resets itself after moving it a few times and your PROBLEM goes away.......................................................................
