My truck has been at the dealer since Dec 1st. The dealer performed all 5 TSB's and determined that the steering box needed to be replaced. They keep giving me new ETA's for repair. Today I was told the new ETA for the part to arrive is 1/6/2017, and that it might even take longer they said because the part is on national back order and not being produced.

Have any of you had the NEWLY designed steering box/gear installed? I am told its a new part.

I have been a GM owner since I had my license, but after spending $65k on a truck thats been in the shop for a leaking 9th injector for the DPF causing a reduced power mode issue, the front brake pads and rotors destroying themself by 4k miles, an oil leak so bad it killed a qt of fluid a week and now this steering issue on a truck that doesn't even have 10000 miles on it... it sure has left a sour taste in my mouth and I likely will be getting rid of it as soon as I get it back because I hate to think what will break next.

Hello Steven,

I certainly understand how frustrating having your truck in the dealership for such a long period of time must be. Your loyalty to the brand is greatly appreciated, and this is not the lasting impression we wish for you to have. We would like to further investigate your situation.

If you wouldn’t mind could you please send us a private message? Within your message be sure to include your VIN, full contact information, the involved dealership and your current vehicle mileage.

Best,

Brandon J.

Add me to the list. Truck has 10500 miles on it and I haven't owned it 4 months yet. My steering suddenly got real sloppy on the highway this morning so I became concerned. I can move the wheel 2 inches back and forth without the tires even moving... I took a few pics...IMG_20161224_112055534.jpg

It's leaking pretty good and the steering feels like it's getting looser as I drive. Time to park it till Monday...

I had the new steering box put on, still have a little bit of a dead zone when the assist changed from about 45-80 mph, anywhere outside of that its fine.

I'm going to lay under and see if it wore out anything else, if not I guess the adjustment nut maybe wasn't to spec on the new box?

GM has to step to the plate and deal with this. Some folks are getting just a new pitman, other are getting the box calibrated, some just alignments and centering of the steering wheel and others are getting what is supposedly a new box. It is all over the map. I don't want to be going down the road towing or not and have this thing fail. There should be a North American recall and everyone gets a permanent fix for this manufacturer problem. These vehicles are new, not long off a dealer's lot. Time to pony up GM.

When I got my truck back, the paperwork shows they replaced the "(S) GEAR", PN 84224694 and "FLUID", PN 19329448. I was told they replaced the Pitman Arm as well, but I don't see that reflected on the paperwork.

It also shows:

"13858 DIAG LOOSE STEERING. FOUND PINION ADJUSTING NUT MISSING AND BOX LEAKING. REPLACE STEERING BOX ASY AND BLEED SYSTEM"

I'm assuming the missing nut mentioned is what others have referred to previously as being missing.

So far only about 300 miles since I got it back, and all seems ok. I'll probably take it back to have them adjust the alignment a bit...it seems to pull very slightly to the right on roads and conditions that it never did before the problem.

Well, I was in and out this morning. The dealer re torqued something and it seems to be ok. Drives normal and doesn't leak for now...

When you guys have you truck turned off but the key turned so you can turn the steering wheel, then move the steering wheel back and forth does it make a clunking noise?

I just got a new box 500 miles ago and its making a clunking noise, the idler arm seems to have some play also

Noise is coming from the box, looks like the shaft is moving around also

Do you happen to have the part number of the new steering box (gear)?

Been reading this topic for a month now and decided I needed to contribute so I became a member and this is my second post :)

I know this topic was started in regards to a 2500HD but I am having the same issues as most of you with my 3500HD and here they are:

  • (11/2/2016) At 13850 miles I had 3-4 inches of play (left to right) so I took it in to the dealer where they performed the STEERING GEAR OVER CENTER ADJUSTMENT

  • (12/1/2016) At 14905 miles I had 3-4 inches of play (left to right) so I took it in again where they performed the same STEERING GEAR OVER CENTER ADJUSTMENT even though I told them I didn't think this fix would work and it didn't.

  • (12/2/2016) Picked the truck up from the dealer, drove about 5 miles and again had about 1-2 inches of play. I immediately took the truck back and said it wasn't fixed. So I took the mechanic for a drive to show him first hand. During the drive he told me the fix wasn't the STEERING GEAR OVER CENTER ADJUSTMENT and that the real fix was a new steering box. So I left the truck with them for about 4 days while I drove a rental car while they ordered and installed a new steering gear/box.

  • (12/26/2016) While driving back from Christmas Vacation I noticed that I have about 1-2 inches of play in the steering wheel again. I am taking the truck in today for its 15k mile service and during my 45 min drive to the dealer I will be focusing on the sloppy steering to I can schedule another mechanical service to "fix" this problem.

I know I left a lot of information out about the road surfaces, towing, etc. but I don't think environmental or truck use has any influence on this issue but I would be happy to answer any of your questions if you have any.

I am not happy about this what-so-ever but the service person I have been dealing with has been great to work with and in fact she is also having the same (maybe worse) issue with her 2016 Chevy 3500HD so she understands what I am going through.

I will be looking into how to file a BBB complaint because I am fairly certain GM does not know how to fix this problem.

Have a good day

Drove 500 miles in the last 2 days and steering still feels tight and no leaks. Time will tell.

The dealer also told me if there has been ANY suspension modifications (even just cranking up the keys) they would deny ALL warranty claims with the steering and suspension. Food for thought...

I just want the pre 2016 steering box (if that were possible). This problem is a complete joke. If GM cannot recognize this is a widespread problem and won't initiate a recall at some point then I will have lost any desire to keep this truck.
