Contemplating just trading my truck in on an LT or work truck that doesn't have the digital assist

Or I can get all new steering components installed every 1000 miles

I'm worried about being 500 miles away from home with a 12k pound trailer and no way to easily get it back

OK the Digital Assist is only on Double Cab LT, LTZ, and High Country with DMax engines and on all Crew Cab models Gas or diesel.

I don't think that the problem is fully related to the Digital Assist.

Speed adjusted and variable ratio steering boxes have been around for years now.

From what I have read here, this problem is more related to the steering box itself and not the digital assist. What needs to be looked at are say standard cab rigs or double cabs with gas engines - if they are also exhibiting the problem then it is not related to the digital assist.

I'm pretty sure everyone that has posted here w/ problems, has had a truck w/ the DSA.

If it's the adjustment nut backing off why are they replacing the pitman arm (my brother's included) when replacing the box?

They have to replace the pitman arm because the new box does not come with it. The GM techs are advised to replace the pitman arm with a new box.

They are not replacing the box. Check the service advisory that has been posted

They are replacing the steering box. I had mine replaced after the TSB's recommendations didn't solve the problem on 4 separate visits to the dealer.

I have the same issue with mine. Currently and the dealer with just under 11,000 KM. They told me it's not safe to drive and the parts are on national back order with no estimate....could be one week or two months. All I can say it's a good thing it's not camping season! I live in Canada and will be filing a complaint with Transport Canada. This is total BS in my opinion...GM should step up, at least have parts available for replacement! Seems like lots of people having issues.

I provided the link above for Transport Canada. My 3500 had less than 7000km when it started acting up.

Repairs this past week still holding.

I waited almost 5 weeks for parts btw. GM paid for the rental

Mine is a 16 All Terrain. Had fix "D" done to it. It is better but not great. I don't find the steering tightens at speed. The wheel isn't centred as it should.. more left and I am always adjusting left. Too much play before the wheels actually turn imo. When a rig this heavy, particularly a diesel, having a solid steering, one that you don't have to fight all the time is necessary. GM has to step up and fix it or take these vehicles back. Once you lose faith in a vehicle, it is gone forever, that is how I feel.

If the mandate is to replace the steering box with a new one, why are some of us only getting fix "D"? When the steering box is replaced, does it fix the issue permanently? If not, folks need to consider a class action lawsuit because nothing less will put GM on the spot. Cannot wait until someone gets hurt.

BTW, I replaced the OEM tires and rims for winter Michelins 18" on steel rims, I think that helped more that the repair.

BIG O, are you getting "D" done to your truck or a new steering box?

My steering box is replaced with the updated part number and it is loosening up againa fter 1500 miles

The new box isnt the solution

From looking I cant tell if the nut is backing off on the new box, maybe I can try to check with a wrench

Thx...I used the link! The more people that file a complaint the better! Good to hear the repairs are holding so far. GM put me in a rental as well...

They told me they will not be replacing the steering box. I'm the same as you...I hate when sh*t goes wrong with your vehicle and they are unsure of the fix. Not a good feeling especially for what the truck is used for...towing a camper. Kinda want the steering to work especially when loaded up towing through the rockies. I'm really disappointed in GM right now! I have two buddies that just bought the 2017 F250 and they are totally rubbing in my face. :nopity:

Good. Spread the word. Transport Canada has a file and will be monitoring. The more the complaints, the sooner they will act.

Once a recall is issued, they have to fix all affected vehicles, not just ones reporting a problem
