Engine temperature

I have a 2005, 1500 5.3 v8. It over heated on me so i replaced the thermostat and new fluids. Now it heats up to just to the left of 210 on the interstate and holds there but will heat up to almost the 3/4 mark when driving around town and stopping and going. Is this normal or should i replace the thermostat again.

Could be lots of things. Water pump could be starting to go. The fins of the radiators could be clogged with crap - leaves, bugs, etc. Fan clutch could be going out.

After I drive around in town and it's just about to the 3/4 mark, it'll slowly go back to normal temp ( just to the left of 210) when I get on the interstate. I check the fins, there a quiet a few bugs and dirt in there, I live out in the country. I'll clean those out for a start, then maybe new water pump?

No clutch fan on an 05, it has E-Fans. What brand of thermostat did you buy? Also make sure your fans are working.

I agree with this, you should consider a radiator flush, at the least.

Flushed the radiator and refilled with new coolant. Still stays just to the left of 210 but will go over a few marks when driving in town. Doesn't get to the 3/4 mark like before but still won't stay under 210 when in town. When I get back on the highway it will slowly go back to normal temp. Should I replace the thermostat again?

GM's coolant should be changed ebvery 5 years or 100k. I change mine every 3 years

When ever I read a post like this I always think, " it over heated for a reason"

Did you maintain the cooling system? If you had it wouldn't have over heated unless a part failed.

IMO

If you flushed the radiator and it helped cool temps in town when less air is going through the radiator I believe the radiator has some plugged up passages. This would be the case if it wasn't maintained properly. :happysad:

Passages inside the radiator or should I unhook and check all the hoses for something clogging them?

The channels inside the radiator where coolant flows across the core, also a good cleaning of the outside with some Simple Green and a good hose would help.

Another thing that you should check is what is the temp when the fans come on? I use a scan tool and an infrared thermometer for that. If the fans are coming on late then the ECT sensor might be sending a false signal to the computer.

+1

Make sure your e-fans are working properly. They have a high and low speed. Simple green is available at grocery store ect.......
