My thoughts about the gas powertrain remaining unchanged

Recommended Posts

Well, the 2015 6.0L beat the 6.4L Hemi in the Ike Gauntlet pull test. And did it with 500 more lb gross weight. I would say it is more than a match for the 6.4L. But to be fair, the engine is only one part. It is how the entire drive train meshes with each other that provides the results. Displacement and HP/Torque numbers are a consideration, but how the drive train actually utilizes the the available power has as much to do with the performance. My semi truck's 12.7L 500 HP 1750 lb Torque Detroit will smoke a lot of 15L 500 HP 1850 torque engines on a hard hill pull with gross weight. Bigger doesn't imply better. How it is set up matters.

Thanks. I never saw that test, but great to know.

Sounds like there will not be much a difference between 3:73 & 4:10.

But I keep forgetting that my 04 5.3 3:73 got better mpg that my 11 4.8 3:42.

What is everyone seeing for gas mileage with the 4:10's? I currently have a 11 2500 crew with 3:73's and am considering a new one, but the gearing has me concerned for a daily driver as well as towing mileage. I realize towing is what it is but the daily driving is what I'm curious about. Thanks.

We just came back from a camping trip, here's a snapshot of the onstar app, the millage is trip A, it also shows the lifetime milage post-84385-147244571034_thumb.png

Nice setup! However, I'm in the US and KM is greek to me LOL. Do you know how that equates to MPG's?

Lol, Around 6mpg, however this was with the wife driving and she has a horrible lead foot, she was doing around 75mph

Nice set-up!

I averaged around 8-8.5MPG on a recent trip to Yellowstone, towing around 8,000 pounds. Mileage kinda sucks, but the truck handles that weight amazing!!

If you want to keep up with highway traffic, expect no more than 14 MPG. I've seen a peak of 17, but it's rare. City, I tend to see about 10 MPG, combined somewhere around 12. Towing, 7-11 MPG.

We also have a 4 cylinder crossover - in city, it gets about 12-14 MPG, highway speeds 24 MPG. It'll get its advertised 30MPG if you go 55 MPH with cruise control on and no passengers/gear. This is better than the 2500, but not better enough that fuel becomes a serious financial strain.

The 2500 gas mileage isn't a big deal, but we aren't commuting in it every day. If I had a 50 mile round trip every day, I'd be more concerned.

Thanks for the replies. I have a 38 mile round trip commute every day with some highway and some city. Not sounding good fro mileage but I understand its 4:10's. Wish I could keep my 3:73's, they worked so well all around for towing my boat and plowing plus the commute

My 2500 with the 8.1/Allison setup is a beast of a tow rig. Fuel economy was never great, especially with a 34' 5th wheel attached, but it would pull that trailer anywhere

8-8.5 towing 8000 lbs 75-80 mph. Work trailer is about 3500 lbs and I average around 11.5-12 mpg mixed hwy and city. Unloaded on the highway only 65-70 mph I average 16 mpg. I have seen high as 17 mpg a tank as low as 5 mpg for a whole tank coming across North Dakota with a travel trailer and nasty headwind.

I believe you can get 3:73's if you want. The standard is 4:10's though. You may have to order one to get them though.

Only 4.10s on the newer trucks since 2014 from what I understand?

Ok, I came up with 11.5 mpg on the lifetime. Do I win anything?

You are right. When I did the build and price I saw the option for 3:73 but apparently when you click on it, it tells you that you need to get the diesel motor to get those gears. Sorry about that.
