Lane Keep Assist Steering Intervention explained

Great article and video, I have this on my new truck and was unsure how it worked. Of course my salesman wasn't much help explaining it to me.

I actually forwarded this link to my salesman, he can learn a LOT from it.

That's what has killed a few Tesla owners.

There are also lot of dead people that thought they knew how to drive and wandered into a head-on.

I have to agree with much here, However, if you buy a truck that has it already installed on it be careful. My 2016 has been declared as dangerous by the GMC dealer. It actually yanks you off of the road or into incoming traffic sporadically. The dealer / GMC has been unable to fix it and advised that I should get rid of my truck. I have had it 3,000 miles and they wanted me to trade out of it. I turn it off every time that I drive the truck. Anyone else having these problems?

I use it all the time while on the freeway. Great feature.

Dang man and I was just thinking how cool the new system is. Only thing I have noticed is that the steering inputs are not exactly accurate, my truck tends to try to self steer (unexpected self steering input) when in a curve and I am not actually close to the outside line. It seems to want me to hug the inside line. I think it just cannot accurately determine the trucks actual position in a curve maybe I need to have the dealer check it? If it ever even once tries to yank me off the road or into traffic or something dangerous I will trade for a Ford immediately LOL I got the red dots to pop up on the dash today this car slammed on brakes ahead of me to try to avoid a dog in the road and I almost popped him I was getting red dots/ seat shaking beeps and all kinds of chit LOL. I am not sre if it hit the brakes for me or not as I was a bit overexcited thinking about wrecking my new under 1000 mile 64k truck

This is all great but I happen to have one with a problem. GMC said that there was no fix for mine. The dealer said that they had a brand new one on the lot with the same problem. You may be correct that I have to take it in the shorts and trade it for a Ford. I have been a GMC guy forever, but it may be the end of an era.

Not good news for us customers or GM corporate. At one time there was an issue with the steering yanking out of peoples hands with a stabiltrac message on the dash. I am not sure how many vehicles were affected but here is a youtube video,

some pretty violent steering wheel action there. Apparently the resolution was a ground wire connection. Do you have any weird electrical glitches when this happens like the radio blinking or a stabiltrak message on the dash?

Not that I have noticed. Thanks for the you tube. GMC said there are no codes and they are not working on a software fix at this time.

I guess I would expect GM to buy it back, if they really do not have a fix then......... I hope ttey get the issue resolved and do not just drop it back on the lot for sale to the next unsuspecting buyer!

I had looked at some of the Ford Limited trucks but at that time they would not willing to deal on pricing. I got to have 20% off MSRP as a starting point to consider a vehicle!

I am not brand loyal I just LIKE the GM product better than the others currently and they will DEAL.

Gotta love these TriFold steps and the 6.2 engine, it puts a wide smile on my face every morning when I turn the key.

Mine works great! I found one road the system did not like on the way to see family in OKC. The lane was fresh paved black with old grey asphalt on the sides. The road curved slighly and the lane keep went crazy thinking the lane markings were zigzagging. I had to manually turn it off. Then later in the trip I missed the feature and turned it back on. Adaptive cruise would be nice.

Deja-vu. Dump it and be thankful they offered an option.

That is exactly why I dumped my '16 Malibu Premiere with less than 2K where the POS system was standard & I yet kept the older '16 LT without it.

From OP post:

"The system has two driver interventions. When it is determined that the vehicle has unintentionally approached a detected lane marking without a turn signal being activated in that direction, and the driver has not actively responded by either steering, accelerating, or braking, the electric power steering system will provide a gentle, momentary correction (torque input to the steering) to help guide the vehicle back on course. Lane Keep Assist does not continuously steer the vehicle. This steering pushback is the first stage of warning/intervention."

Gentle pushback my a$$! The owners manual in the Malibu indicates that there will not be an active pushback if the system detects positive driver hands on control of the steering wheel. BUT:

The faster the speed of the vehicle the harder the pushback........OK if you're going slow, but at 60+ the kickback is significant even if your hands are actively on the wheel.

Front camera's (even with a squeaky clean windshield) recognition a software algorithm must be buggy. Even on the same road under the same lighting conditions, sometimes it will recognize the lines other times not; and green-yellow, on-off switching is not instantaneous. Worse, sometimes it works on a single lane road with a center line and curb line in addition to a multi-lane roads. Usually a break in the curb line because of a pothole screws with it......hit a pothole at 50+ while it is off and it turns back on and it kicks like a mule and if unaware it will send you right into oncoming traffic.

Turning the collision system off was not an option since one of the visiting kids family will invariably turn it on with grandchildren in the vehicle -so I dumped for a '17 Impala with just the beep, no kickback and no vibrating seat. Seems GM is piloting different configurations in different years/bodyline vehicles and we are the guinea pigs.

What a great idea, couple the electric steering into the vehicle network so a hacker (just like OnStar) can access it. Just like OnStar can remotely start your vehicle a good hacker (just like in the Jeeps) can access your steering and send you into a ditch.

Thank you so much for your response. GMC asked me if I wanted a new truck or a refund last Thursday. Yesterday they called back and said that the General Manager had decided to do neither. GMC will not provide me with the name or contact information of the General Manager that made this decision that is putting my life at risk. Their only offer was $1,000 off of a trade in on a new vehicle. I have put 3000 miles on a new truck and they want me to pay another $6,000+ to get out of a dangerous vehicle into the exact same truck.

Depending upon whether your willing to go extra bucks or keep what you have & drive with the system off......see if you can get the dealer into a win-win.

My .02 for what it's worth. Forget about an even swap likely he won't do it because GM doesn't want to get stuck with a buyback with a lemon label......much worse with a black mark against their remarkable, magical driver assistance package....their pioneer entry toward driver-less vehicles. Try approaching as a repeat customer accommodation rather than a buyback asking for every possible discount including all owner loyalty, rebates and his holdback cash for the month against an equivalent '17 without the driver assistance crap (lower level blind spot and x-traffic alert only are OK because they don't actively screw with the steering or braking). The net cost considering the additional worth of the year newer model against a future trade and the lower MSRP minus the driver assistance package might bring it to much less than the $6000 to make it affordable or at least something you feel you can live with.

Dealer might be more receptive to a better deal because he gets GM credits against future stock with extra sales and an ultra-low mileage one for the used car lot for those who can't afford cash or ceredit for new.
