Another fog light thread...

A long time ago my father taught me two rules about driving, one is that you can't drive faster than the car in front of you and the other is that two cars can't occupy the same space at the same time.

 

Unfortunately I challenged that second rule the other day and while the damage was minimal and no one was hurt, I find myself in the position where I have an opportunity to remove and replace the front bumper. I figured as long as it's off I could replace those crappy fog lights with some decent driving lights but I still don't see anything even close to a drop-in module other than that ugly Rigid light cube. I'd like to stick with the stock looking round lights.

 

Has anyone yet come out with a complete drop-in driving light module that would be a plug-and-play replacement for the fogs? I know all about the conversions to HID and the LED light bulbs which don't work very well due to the reflector design of the light module.

 

What are my best options?

Oh, I should also say that this is for a 2014 Sierra SLT 1/2 ton...

To swap out the housings you're looking at the morimoto Xb leds or the rigid dot fogs.

After you turn on those rigid cubes you wont care what they look like. They are brighter then your head lights.

plug and play with factory fog harness. you do need yo cut one peice of plastic in there.

 

 

 

 

if you want to keep the factory housing in tact. you can use the philips conversion. This would be my choice.

Slight change of topic, but how the eff do you get these fog light bulbs out? Human fingers were not made to bend in the necessary angles needed to get to the bottom tabs.

Also, I'm looking for more of a driving light than a fog light. Do the Morimoto's extend your field of view at all?

They sure as hell aren't easy for me. I can't even get anything but my thumb on the bottom tab. Maybe I'm just coming at from the wrong angle.

I can pretty much drive without my headlights if I need too. They don't shine too far away but are bright enough if you're looking in front of you you'll see where you're going at a safe speed and you can see deer and everything off in the ditches by the roads.

Nothing will work correctly in the stock housing, I have tried 3 other brands and in the end had to come back to the stock bulb. Here is why.

 

The stock bulb is a regular ole incandescent bulb, it is not very long and is round like a large marble and sits right on the end of the plug end. All of the aftermarket's are long and thin HIR filaments, there is where the problem lies. When the projector housing is designed the engineers take into account the focal point that is generated from the bulb in order to design the refractor in the housing. The stock bulbs and refractor is designed around each other.

 

When you run any style bulb other than the stock style the longer and thinned bulb changes the focal point and how the light refracts off of the housing, in turn it washes the light output out and you end up with less light or maybe about the same as the stock bulb even though the new light has more candlepower.

 

I think one company makes an adjustable light that will work in our housings, you can move the filament down so that it is more in line with the stock focal length and works with the factory housing. Other the Rigid lights are the only other drop in options.

I was skeptical about the rigids too, but after installing them they are a game changer. Remarkably bright and not blinding to oncoming traffic.
