So I bought the 2016 Silverado 1500 4x4 and I see that they are running 0w50 motor oil. I've been told to use 10w40 my entire life so I guess my question is why are they running 0w50? Is it longer lasting or better in some way?

They run 0w-20 not 50. No need to run 10w-40. It offers no better protection and reduces fuel mileage

10w-40 hasn't been used since the 80's or early 90's. Even my 1995 S-10 was 5w20

Engine clearances and oil flow rates are designed for the recommended viscosities.

 

"Use SAE 0W-20 viscosity grade for the 5.3L and 6.2L V8 engines.

Use SAE 5W-30 viscosity grade for the 4.3L V6, and 6.0L V8 engines."

The are many oils the meet the Dexos specification. (and lots of viscosities available)

The run better oils now the same reason they removed the 8 track tape deck. There is something better out there now.

There probably isn't a single vehicle sold today that needs 10W-40. Follow manufacturer recommendations.
