A few pounds for winter!

Wanted a little winter weight before the snow flies. I built a small frame out of 2x6 to hold four 24" x 30" concrete patio stones. They weigh 96lbs each so it should do the trick just being shy of 400lbs right over the axle and the best part is no sand to clean up :D . Should help the winter tires bite for some traction...

It probably will help a little but as long as you have 4x4 I don't think that's much of a difference. But, I've always had a toolbox with a ton of weight so I don't think I've driven a truck in the snow without weight already in the bed,

Looks awesome. Are you planning on strapping it down?

You bet...you can see the red straps in the second pic. Just never had them set for the pics

I will only offer one bit of thought...run another two boards from the front of your box to the front of your bed. Even strapped, that box will want to pop apart and the blocks slide forward.

If you look at the 2nd pic you see he put blocks of wood in front to keep them from sliding around.

I tend to over do it or over build (should see me strap something down), I would had support gussets in the corners of the front and rear boards.

Nah, I'm talking clear to front of bed...

Can't add any more...done here.

I know but with it strapped down tight I don't see the whole thing moving around. I would use the rings on the lower corners of the bed and cross the straps. The rings being lower than the top of the box the straps will also push down and with the front and rear boards around the wheel wells I think he's good. I would just add corner supports for the front, rear and side boards on the top so they don't flex any.

What's the point? Unless you need ballast for a plow.

Just put it in 4WD and go.

Personal preference for me! I have always added a little weight to my trucks and since the truck was designed to carry a payload, the empty cargo bed leaves very little weight on the rear axle, and therefore limited traction at the rear wheels. I find the added weight helps with traction and I don't need to be in 4x4 all the time when the road conditions turn to crap. Last year I rarely had to use 4x4...plenty of traction! To each there own I guess...

Gotcha...this is my first 3/4 ton truck. Never felt the need in the half tons but maybe I will in the one.

I don't run any extra weight in winter (I have a 2500 also), but I can't have the bed full of weight either.

cool idea! much cleaner than sand. Used chopped fire wood in my truck back in high school. I was the only kid at school with almost a cord of firewood ready to go
