hi, currently have a 2014 2500 LT...looking to upgrade to a new 2500 LTZ....seems like you can save ~$5k by getting a leftover 2016 vs. a 2017...what was changed from 2016 to 2017?

2017 vs. 2016, the 2017 has the new Duramax (if you are shopping diesel and really want the new one), capless fuel fill, teen driver and a couple paint colors. Pretty much it. Nothing else really changes from 16 to 17 otherwise. If you are looking to get into a truck really quick/soon, a 2016 might be the thing to get, especially the $$$ off, especially if its a bonus tag truck. For example, we had a 2500hd double cab LTZ 6.0 Z71. MSRP was $54k and change, with bonus tag it was $45,630.

I got a 16 recently and got it $11k off sticker, so for me, that was the selling point! Didn't want a diesel so it was a no brainer

My local dealers are selling '17 Duramax trucks for $6K off MSRP

I saw an TV ad on 1 of the Detroit stations this week & the Ford dealers still have '16s on the lots. (Hold the Ford jokes for a moment) Either they have a HUGE inventory of '16s or they had a long build for the model year.

Is it normal for past model year stock to hang around this close to the New Year?

I bought my '16 in January of '16, and most places I looked had many '15s leftover. So yes, I believe that is somewhat normal. In my case, my '16 was only a few dollars and it came with more options that many of the '15s I looked at.

thanks for the feedback...looking at gas, not diesel, should have mentioned that...I'm seeing ~$14k off '16 models and ~$8k off '17 models. I'm guessing that the MSRP for '17 is slightly higher as well, although I don't know that...meaning with apples to apples trucks, the '16 would start off cheaper even before the discounts. trouble is finding a '16 in the color I want...and of course playing the trade-in game...anyone have a link to a good site for getting an accurate trade value? kbb.com seems very optimistic, indicating my trade is worth ~$30k which I would ecstatic about as I figured that is about what I'd be lucky to get in a private party sale...

Before I ordered my '17, the salesman did a search for a Ocean Blue regular cab. We only found 1 in southern Ontario & it wasn't optioned all that close to I wanted.

Bro's '16 CC came from Quebec. GMC Dmaxes were scarce in the paint & trim colours they wanted (Iridium Metallic & black). He did the deal for it before we "searched" for a '16 for me.

As was posted before very little difference between the 2 model years in the gasser category.

I would hope that the '17s w/ the Digital Steering Assist have had the problems straightened out.

Indeed! The '17 and the '16 are the same, with the latter having much better discounts. Heck, if you can find a new '15 LTZ, I would jump on that!!! That would be a steal. Not likely, but some internet shopping and might be doable. A dealer can have a pickup brought it to you from anywhere in the country, within reason. I have done state to state buys before. Dealer located what I wanted and had it brought in from another state. And it wasn't just some driving across the state line thing. It was 400 miles. I only had to make a commitment to buy when it showed up. All the spec's were what I wanted so I bought it.

A left over will have more discount BUT the newer will have a higher value in a year or 2,3,4,5 years later ...

say discount leftover of $10,000 vs discount of $5000 for current year BUT book value of maybe $2500 more for the newer next year ...

I think there is more savings buying a leftover at more discount if you can find what you want ...

some trade offs moneywise - more important is having the truck you really want and will enjoy the most

That capless fuel fill idea is a total turn off to me. If that is the way they are going, will either not ever buy another GM pickup or find a way to replace it with a cap. I drive in far too much nasty, dirty environments to risk dirt getting in the tank because of that capless setup. GM really needs to stop advertising their pickups as built for work. This nanny state stuff is getting way out of hand.

It going to be hilarious in about six months when all these 15 and 16 HD's are sitting on dealer lots as trade ins once folks take a test drive in the new 2017.

Yea they may look the same, but Ive driven both and the 17 drives like a totally different truck. The new Duramax engine is the best of any of the big three. It makes the truck feel like it weighs 2000 lbs. lighter do to the added torque and horsepower. I could not believe the difference. Go try one for your self and you decide. Once the new body (aluminum) goes on I doubt any of the big three truck builders will be able to touch the performance of the Duramax.
