Filling with Gas

Recommended Posts

Hey everyone,

Am I the only one who thinks it's a pain to fill these trucks up or is it just my truck? Every time I go to the pump, regardless of which gas station, I can't set the pump to automatically fill because it keeps popping for the first couple minutes?

Thoughts?

Yup, everyone of the trucks does this...........I would assume there is a reason for it. Look at your off center cocked steering wheel too! Reason for that everyone has it!

It doesn't shut off as often if you point the spout towards the rear of the vehicle, but you still have to stand there and hold the damn thing. Mine's got a 34 gal tank for even more fun.

mine generally doesn't have the problem either, though I have had it happen a few times.

I think it has to do with how far you jam the nozzle into the hole. the gas bounces around in the tube and shuts off the "full" sensor. Try pulling the nozzle 1/4" farther out and see if that helps.

I've only noticed this happening on my two trucks when I am below a 1/4 tank, above that the auto fill works. Below that I basically have to trickle the gas in!

I used to have this problem my first few fill ups, ever since then I've always been able to do the auto fill. I'm not sure exactly what I did to fix it. Maybe after consciously releasing it slowly, I "automatically" pull my fingers off of of the "trigger" slowly. Set it on the lock and gently release your fingers, like defusing a bomb haha. That's probably what I do, but I can't honestly tell you for sure how I solved my issue. Also I noticed I changed the angle that I insert the nozzle. Not sure if I try to angle it more "vertical" or "horizontal". I know there isn't much play in that hole (no pun intended) but like how it is set in there may also have an effect.

It was quite frustrating initially as I bought the truck in the midst of a chilly winter and keeping my hand on the cold pump was not fun.

I filled my 2017 Silverado for the 1st time yesterday and had no problem. My 2007 Sierra had the issue and I just got in the habit of pulling the spout out and inch or so and no more problem. I do this on all my vehicles now.

My '16 is a bit "finicky" withthe fuel nozzle...just have to find the sweet spot. Sucks in cold weather, but kinda is what it is. Most stations have eliminated the lock on the nozzle anyway.

Really?!?! I sure hope that doesn't make its way to the midwest.

Most are gone here as well. I do use one on occasion and have no trouble.

Never had this issue with my truck. Their are a few reason it does happen and it may not be GMs fault. If the pump dispenses fuel too fast it can't flow down the filler neck fast enough, so auto stop on the gas pump kicks in. If the fuel nozzle isn't angled correctly, creating the same issue as I stated previously and the pump shuts off.

I have this issue constantly on my 91 mustang and have to pump gas at about 1/4 the speed of any of my other vehicles. On that car it's due to the filler neck angle on the car. I've owned other fox body mustangs and never had the issue.

Sometimes pulling the pump nozzle out slightly allows the gas to flow better and eliminates the issue as well. That said, it sucks to trickle gas into a 14 gallon tank, I can't imagine how long it takes on a 26 gallon. I feel sorry for yall lol.

According to my memory, which is fairly jacked, they broke the dog off of the nozzle 3-5yrs ago. Not all stations, but most of them. I assume they did because people were over-filling their tanks. I've had issues with the automatic stop working a few times.
