2016 Silverado 1500 first oil change

While it is true that many full syn oils will easily go to 10,000+ miles, that doesn't mean it is wise to do so. A used oil sample analysis will show the condition of the oil, but unless you are doing regular UOA's all the time, you have no way to track trend lines and patterns in the oil over intervals and detect changes that are happening that might indicate a shorter interval is better. Accelerated wear metal rates, faster depletion of TBN, oxidation rates, etc need to be tracked to see where there are variances that can indicate going beyond a certain point is detrimental. Most folks don't have the desire to go to that extreme, except commercial users, so going that long might not be the wisest idea.

Another oil thread.

Real simple to me. Oil and filters don't have to be expensive, so change them. Easy. :happysad:

What convinced me away from the 3,000/3mo myth was having the oil in my 10qrt capacity Duramax analyzed at 10,000 miles and 10 months. It still was good to run. Now I go by the manual which is usually 6,000-7,500 or 1 year whichever occurs first. GM's DIC for me is often too long - I will agree with that.

The 6.2L holds 8qrts - so that will help oil life.

:driving:

I've ran regular Rotella to 45k and UOAs came back suitable for continued use...the oil and engine of today, are definitely not the poor oils and loose engines of the 70s/80s.

Just did my 2nd oil change on the '16 in my signature...............bought in mid July 2016. Just over 15,000 miles now. Did both changes just prior to or just over when the DIC said 0% left on the oil. Both times the oil was darker than new; but not black. Haven't had to add any oil in the time I've owned this truck either.

Mobile 1 0w20 full synthetic both times.

With today's engines, running a quality full synthetic less than 7,500 hundred miles is a waste of money.

So is about 90% of what folks spend money for on their vehicles. Oil changes are one of the cheaper "wastes". In many cases, cheaper than eating out on a weekend.

Dexos 1 is full synthetic and Dexos is the blend.

Just want to clarify, it is dexos1™ and dexos2™

The 1 is for gasoline engines and 2 is for diesel's. There is no plain dexos.

Also dexos1™ should be full synthetic in all dealerships by the end of March as they sell out of the older stock.

If you are going to run an OCI less than 7,500 miles, you're better off buying any quality conventional oil. No need whatsoever to waste money on a synthetic. Better to just go out an eat on the weekend twice.

It's whatever give people that warm fuzzy. If they want to spend the extra money on synthetic, so be it.

I would take the middle ground and use a blend. Can be had at roughly same price point as many conventional oils yet offer best of both worlds. But I do use a Pennz conventional 10w30 in my Cadillac that GM feels it needs a M1 5w30. Car is over 11 years old and runs great. A true keeper. Full syns are somewhat overrated at times and not always the best value. I concern myself primarily with the additive package that makes up 20% of any motor oil. That has as much to do with whether an oil is good, better, or best as the.base oil does.

I don't understand why people complain about oil price. When you can get 5 qts of a full synthetic for $20 and a top of the line filter for $10 what's the point in talking money?

Let's be real here. A $40-$50k vehicle and people want to argue over $50 a year in additional cost?

For those saying 5k is a waste. That's you. In 18yrs I've never once had a vehicle in the shop for anything mechanical. Only something electrical like cruise control not working. If you spent the weekend towing a trailer at max load up a steep grade or off-roading and running high temps there's nothing wrong with going ahead and changing oil or a filter. The oil might be in great condition chemically but could have particulates in it.

All I know is A) I'm not some overly cheap-o that looks at the cost of it now as prohibitive

B) Sees a few bucks here worth the savings in the long run of no issues.

Not sure but oil plays a big part that wears over time like old age. When's the last time there's been a report of someone dying specifically because of preservatives in their food? Anyone want to argue that organic isn't healthier? Fastest country in the world here but can't face the facts.

Why is it multiple oils all of the same weight can have completely different qualities? Look on YouTube at pour tests. Why is it they have different protection abilities and why you can sometimes hear or feel the difference with different t brands. I could easily tell the difference in engine sounds on my Ecodiesel based on the oil type alone. Something making that happen.

Is mechanic failure really a failure to you? I'd probably consider something a failure long before it actually breaks. Deposit build ups, power loss, vibrations, noises. All can happen before there's a failure. I'm not looking to stop failures I'm looking to keeping something running like it was new.

I just checked WalMart's site and you can get 5qts of full synthetic for as low as $13 and can get a reputable brand with high ware ratings of 100k psi+ for $20. It's absolutely ridiculous that anyone would complain about the cost of it overall. There is factual evidence that all oils are not alike and that longer oil change intervals lead to more issues.

that's correct. for some reason I thought the blend didn't have a number. i checked the drums at work and the old and new ones say dexos 1,
