So Ford has had this since 2008. What do they not drive them up in Canada or in snowy weather?

Different style and design...

 

I had a capless full fill on the one vehicle I took to Idaho to bomb around on BLM land for work (it was a rental Toyota Rav4 if I remember correctly). Had inches of mud on the sides and underneath, ran through flooded roads; all in a place supposedly dry 99% of the time. The only thing that was clean was the interior and the inside of the fuel door and the fuel fill. There was nothing in that design that indicated it would have issues (I was skeptical of the capless design myself). Even spraying it down at a car wash would leave no visible water inside that fuel door.

 

I was sold on that design...I hate tethered fuel caps because they eventually get dropped against the paint and scratch things.

Sure, they get driven, even in my area of the midwest on rural roads. But get with those who drive them more than on streets and highways on a continual basis and ask them what they think about the capless idea. Be forewarned, you might learn some new and interesting swear words from some of the farmers and ranchers around. Not everyone has the ability to take their pickup thru the wash before filling up and cleaning all that out.

 

My main thing is it is just another example of the nanny folks trying to protect us from ourselves. Hard to imagine how folks did so well back in my younger days with fuel tanks behind the driver seat on pickups with the filler cap just behind the cab door. Of course, those caps weren't "dangling" style. Sometimes simplicity is the better option.

Ford has been down this road already. Take note on my ford work truck. They have a gasket sealing the door so crap like this doesn't happen. Come on GM at least learn from your competitors...

Not like GM invented it, Ford actually came out with the capless fuel system back in 2008 and now quite a few manufactures have followed suit because the public showed a positive interest in it, especially women.

 

I however agree there should be a sealed side door if you want to use a capless system.

I don't care who invented this stupid piece of crap or how long it's been out all im saying is it's absolutley the biggest POS gadgit in the market currently.

I can actually think of a few bigger POS than this though, lol. But lets not vear off from this devastating topic..I don't think anyone disagrees here.

My 2016 F150 has a capless fuel system but it also has a Rubber seal around the fuel door and I have not had any debris or dirt anywhere in there

And I live in Vancouver British Columbia one of the rainiest places in North America

This is definitely a thing I hate about my new 2017 also. I too am from northern ont, and when I wash my trucks/cars whatever I have I always open the gas door and wash in there as well. I'm definitely afraid to now as who knows if water and stuff will get in.. what to do lol. Definitely don't want to put a vinyl cap on there. Be a pia. Condom maybe? Haha

I don't know how either GM capless fuel system works but on my Ford I have to use a special funnel if I don't use this funnel gasoline will just pour all over the ground and if you pour straight water in there it will pour right on the ground it won't go into your fuel tank

Think I saw the design for the system somewhere online. It does make it impossible to siphon fuel. Haven't tried using a Jerry can without the funnel. Still don't want dirt/debris getting in

 

GM's cold weather testing facility is 3hrs east of me in Kapuskasing Ontario. Guess they decided against testing the soles system there lol

 

Not only is it missing a gasket for fuel door, the filler neck surround isn't sealed. So road spray goes up behind the bed and into fuel fill area

Anyone know the last year that GM had a capped fuel filler neck? Was it 2015? I'm assuming it'll swap in without issue. Might have to ditch this capless fuel garbage. Already been looking up part costs, GM components for 2015 fuel filler neck aren't that expensive

2016. Capless is a new for 2017 feature.

Haha, I am the OP lol. Instead of playing around with vinyl caps etc, just thinking of swapping out filler necks and calling it a day. Go back to a proven system and never worry about it again

Haha oops! My apologies, thought you meant this thread.

 

Called GM Canada and they just told me to take it to the dealer and see what they say. So I told them the dealer would just tell me that's the way it is and to call GM Canada.

 

They did provide me with a link where customers can submit ideas. www.gmideas.com

 

Not sure if they actually read what people submit but I fired off my input anyways

So I need to plug or cover the fuel fill hole. Getting too much debris and garbage in there. Searched online but no luck. Anyone here find a clean way to prevent debris from getting in without making it a hassle at fill ups?

 

Please spare me the replies about not getting dirt in yours when you live in the beauty states lol.

One week of ownership and filled it today when the low fuel warning popped up. The cap-less fill worked fine - it's like not knowing you are pumping gas. I do have it covered with this dust cap to keep things clean and dry:

    • The “engine hours” display is there because the truck detects the key presence as you were thinking.   My first step would be to call a dealer service person and ask if this a known issue and how they deal with it. If you don’t get meaningful advice there, i would try a couple of DIY things before bringing it in for troubleshooting/repair.   It sounds like a mechanical key detection switch is stuck, but I have not actually seen what the internals look like. Maybe spray some Caig Deoxit (electrical contact cleaner) in the key hole and work the key in and out in case it’s an electrical contact cleanliness issue.  If that doesn’t work, next apply whatever lubricant GM recommends and work the key in and out a few times.    Good luck with it. 
    • Carbon on valves would be the least of my worries on a light duty, 1500-series pickup with 357k provided the engine still ran halfway decently. Everything else is likely toast, on its way out, or has already been mauled to death by cheap mechanics and backyard fixes. Those kinds of trucks nickel and dime a guy to death.   I wouldn't think having the top end cleaned once or twice would be a big deal on a 5.3 but maybe it is?

    • When I had a Bumper subscription for a few days when I needed to run title histories on cars I was looking at, I decided to look up a few of my old/past vehicles.   My 2015 Silverado was still actively registered and it last sold in 2024 with 160k on the clock. No idea if that's on the original engine but someone's keeping it on the road or the original AFM stuff is still going.   It used 0w20. I remember feeding it Mobil 0w20 AFE for the first 30k of its life on <5k OCI's.     Edit: Just did a nationwide search on Autotrader for 2015-2025 Silverados with 5.3's and sorted by highest mileage first.   357k 352k 292k 291k 290k 277k 271k 268k 266k 259k 256k   High mileage on a modern 5.3 doesn't seem all that uncommon, but that's just searching mostly dealer ads on Autotrader. FB Marketplace has all kinds of high mileage 5.3's going back to 2007    
    • I can't say I have ever heard of someone getting that type of mileage out of a set of tires even though they rotated on a regular basis but without a doubt if the front end gets wear and those tires are no longer able to track straight it scrubs them off, and driving style and road surface make a huge difference as well.    However that is not what prompted me to comment as it was the new tire theme of sitting in storage waiting to be used scenario. I am sure some tires can last for quite a while in storage if its not too warm and out of the sunlight but unfortunately some tires the way they their rubber compound is formulated they can age and dry out even in a reasonably decent storage location. My brother ran into this maybe three years ago when he was looking at the tires that were on his dually truck and a combination of wear on the rear ones and noticing that the front tires had some cracks around the sidewall of the tire not far from the bead but he had replaced only the front ones not long ago with 2 of the remaining 6 he had left from the initial two sets of takeoffs he had all bought at the same time .... 10 years ago ! ( the years fly by, a truck that only gets used a bit to haul a camper during the summer and sits in a shed for a large part of the year ). That second set of 6 tires, two he had put on the front prior like I said and they had very little wear but those cracks were now present. So we go into the shed where the other 4 tires had been stored all this time and every one of them had the same cracks in the sidewalls and so in the end it amounted to throwing away 6 brand new but 10 year old takeoff tires into the dump that he got a deal on at a tire shop because they aged out. They were a Ford factory equipment BFG tire and those tires did not age well compared to some tires I've seen far older then that and did not show that type of aging. True, they always say up here anyway that 7 years is sort of a limit for age by rights, we don't have the intense prolonged heat that many of you have down in the states that just cook tires and depends on where the vehicle sits when not in use. GB, another words maybe had you bought a set of tires to store it would have been fine as long as you used them up fast enough but there are no guarantees when it comes to rubber, tires or of that other type stored in some guys wallets 😆
