Catch can questions from a noob

I have been reading about these a lot these days. I have never heard of things before but it seems the consensus is I should install a good quality one and the sooner the better. I'm at 1700 miles now. My question is other then potential warranty issues which I have decided are a non issue as I can quickly replace before any service, why shouldn't I put one in? Not having mechanical know how it seems obvious I don't want this gunk reaching my engine but is this just snake oil? I have read a lot about elite what other good brands should I look for? Summer time i do quite a bit of cross country towing with a travel trailer. Otherwise a daily driver with some off road hunting trips.

Look at my build thread. I just installed mine just over 15xx miles. It's and awesome plug n play system. Clean!

Personal choice IMO.

What truck???

GM didn't put one on from the factory. Why? Maybe they want to sell parts, engines.

Could be worse on direct injection engines.

IMO opinion a lot factors involved. Oil change intervals, oil type, gasoline quality, to name a few. :happysad:

I would assume because people wouldn't know about it from the factory and never empty it

Well...I would have to think GM has more R&D, and a lot more qualified personal designing these engines than a speed shop trying to sell a product does. That being said if anyone thinks they left a system that is as important as people think it is off for fear that people wouldn't drain it....c'mon you have to be joking. You get an alert when the freaking windshield washer fluid is low, you think they couldn't do the same thing when the catch can is full of snake oil? How hard would it honestly be to create a catch can that self drains back into the oil pan via a pump or some form of vacuum assisted system???

So if they had put in a "full catch can light" on, you think people would still pay attention to it? People drive with check lights on. People don't refill washer fluid for days, weeks, months. Pump the nasty crap in the catch can, back into the oil pan? Yea that isn't going to work. And add a pump, just another thing that will need replacing when it breaksdown. Just my 0.02.

Well a lot of people will go 10-15k miles or more without ever getting an oil change, hasn't stopped manufacturers from putting oil filters on every car they sell. Ever read through a vehicles maintenance schedule? How many people skip a lot of the suggested checks and fluid flushes? They put it on there, suggest a maintenance interval, and if the end user does not follow it and there is a failure as a result it voids the warranty. Pretty simple really.

People can argue all day that they think they aren't needed but I've never heard someone give a reason why you shouldn't install one (except for the initial cost). There is no way you will hurt anything having it in there.

My opinion as to why they don't come from the factory is two-fold. One, common people would be hesitant to buy something that has this weird system on it that requires draining dirty oil out every few thousand miles. It would be a marketing nightmare. This is 2017, most people don't want to get their hands dirty working on their vehicle (and many more shouldn't be working on their own vehicle). Also, what would most people do with the old oil/sludge that they drain out? Can you imagine the salesman telling customers that they will have to drain out dirty oil periodically and then you will have to keep an old bucket at home to keep it in and then occasionally bring that bucket in to somewhere that takes used motor oil??

Secondly, I have no doubt these motors will go 100k - 150k miles without any real issues without a catch can. GM has no motivation to make a motor last any longer than that. I do feel that after 50,000 - 75,000 miles without one you will start to see a loss of power and efficiency. Most people won't notice it and if they do they will just chalk it up to the mileage and probably start thinking about what color the new truck they buy will be!

Here is a picture of what I drained after the first 1000 miles. I have and would recommend the Moroso brand.
