How many regret leaving....

We had a 2003 Tahoe. Loved it. Went to a 2012 Grand Cherokee. Stuck it out for 2.5 yrs. Bought it used with 30k on it. Had more issues with it in 44k than the old Tahoe that had nearly 200k on it. Traded the JGC for a new 2017 Tahoe a few weeks ago. Loving it so far (except the DVD player that doesn't transmit wireless sound, but working on getting that fixed).

Funny how some get bad ones and other get good ones. I also own a 2012 JGC and have 100k miles on it and it has not ever had the first problem. Driven it from TN to Montana twice now plus multiple trips to the gulf coast. Actually gonna miss it when we do decide to get rid of it in the next year or two. My 2014 silverado has had multiple issues since I bought it 2.5 years ago, nothing major just annoying to have to take off work to get it fixed. I've owned 4 silverados in a row with 3 of them bought new (82,92,02,14) and I still regret getting rid of my 02 model.

I'll be one of the first to say they regret getting this truck. My last full size truck, a '99 ECSB GMC Z71, was a squeaky, clunky POS despite my maintenance from 40k to 84k miles; every shift from park to drive was followed by an audible clunk that could be felt (felt like the rear moving on the springs) that neither myself nor the dealer could pinpoint. Horrible fit and finish, ride, power, et al., so much so that I swore off GM and their trucks for a decade, and went German. Fast forward and last April my father bought a loaded CCLB Colorado Z71, a truck that thoroughly impressed me, so much so that it planted the seeds of wanting to get back into a newer truck. I'd been daily driving my '08 BMW X3, a vehicle that at 130k still has both this '17 Silverado and Dad's '16 Colorado beat in every qualitative category, from fit and finish, to comfort, to engineering, to features, etc., but after buying a larger spread of land last summer, my '84 GMC just didn't have the comfort or the capability (mostly the capability) for 400 mile round-trip tows/hauls fully loaded with a trailer any more. I went out looking for a Colorado Diesel, but wound up being sold on this Silverado simply because there were better incentives on the Silverado, and I didn't want to pay more for less capability (even though I'd never find myself between the Colorado's and Silverado's max tow ratings).

Now, remorse has set in, and after less than 7k miles, I want to get out of this Silverado and into a Colorado if I can make the numbers work. I thought front coil springs would have helped ail the ride and handling that I loathed about my '99; nope. I thought 18 years of quality upgrades would help the poor fit and finish, and reality is marginal. I find the Colorado to be a better put together vehicle. Not sure why Ford and Ram can put together capable full-size trucks that drive without squeaks and clunks and GM can't, yet the F-450 I drive at work has been through 4 years of obscene abuse, and continues to do so in operational silence. I'm not sure if GM still does it, but in previous generations the ECM would cut engine power when shifting to preserve the transmission, as the transmission couldn't handle the power levels of the 5.3 over a decade ago; I wouldn't doubt they still do, and that's why so many people complain about shifting issues from both the 6 and 8 speeds. The 6L50 of my dad's Colorado and my X3 sure don't exhibit those shifting issues.

Is the Silverado horrible? No, and for some it's probably just fine. Perhaps I've just been spoiled from driving the Roundel for 5 years, but there is cause for concern when the 44 passenger bus I drive at work drives with less clunks, squeaks, and vibrations than a brand new '17 Chevy.

You can't compare these to a brand like BMW... there is no comparison at all. As I have said many times before, if BMW or Merc ever came out with a pickup I would buy it in a heartbeat. They are just that much better.

It sounds to me like your truck fell of the top deck of the transport truck and your dealer did a poor job of putting it back together. I have a 15 GMC Sierra and the fit and finish is outstanding. It drives and rides quietly and smoothly. I once had to take in for service when the left front signal light needed replacing. If my truck made noises or rode worse than a bus, I'd take it back for service. I do appreciate and recognize a nice riding vehicle. Your particular vehicle as you describe it is not an accurate representation of the brand, imo

Agreed! My 2016 Silverado rides nice a quiet. Much quieter than the 2015 Honda CRV my wife drives and much quieter than my old Honda Ridgeline. This truck is probably one of the quietest vehicles I have ever owned.

I have to second that, my 2014 is extremely quiet no matter what road or speed I am travelling.

Never left GM.....Just turned 25,000 miles on GMC Sierra 2016 and I have put new Wiper blades on it and had the trans flushed and filled on my dime! This thing is driving more solid than when I picked it up....pretty impressed!

Maybe I had a bunch of BMW lemons, but my Silverado is quieter and rides better than any of those German machines I used to have. And I had a bunch of them. From the smallest to the largest.

BMW's are great if you like to drive aggressively and push it to the limit. You have to pay to play though, BMW's are expensive to fix and they need a lot of fixing.

I'm way past the days of pushing cars to the limit, so I really enjoy driving my truck.

I will bet any day of the week that a Tahoe (or Expedition, or even the Armada or Sequoia) will outlast an X5 or whatever the big BMW SUV is with half the maintenance. Not comparing apples to apples, any Chevy/Ford/Dodge/Nissan/Toyota truck I would be pretty willing to put money on as being more durable than any German car except MAYBE that Mercedes squarebody SUV who's name escapes me right now, especially when put under severe duty. German cars might be "fancier" or faster, I totally understand the market for luxury. But they're not made to be beat on.

I've been driving my BMW hard (like it is meant to) for 10 years now and I have not done anything but regular maintenance. I would pit it's reliability against any other manufacturer. Same story with my ex's 6 year old Merc SUV.

Sure there are some exceptions (i.e. e92 with the HPFP) but that was ultimately covered under warranty for anyone with issues, as are most of the issues with BMW. That is one of the reasons BMW does the 3 year all inclusive warranty (was 4 years until this past year - and is really all inclusive since it covers oil and wiper blades and other "normal wear" items)

Older pre cylinder deactivation GM full sized I'd put up against just about anything. But sadly GMs testing doesn't seem to be complete regarding new products when let out to the public. Direct injection and cylinder deactivation isn't ready for prime time. I still remember the famous 5.7 deisel, ouch!

I figured I would chime in here. I have been GM branded since my first car, 1988 Corvette, 1995 S10 blazer, 2003 Suburban Z71 and now my 2014 Sierra SLT CCSB. The only regret I have had honestly is getting rid of the 2003 Suburban with 200k miles for my Sierra.

Bought the sierra with 20,000 miles, CPO in 2015 and have had more issues with it than any of my other GM's combined.

1) Trailer brake shorted out twice

2) Heated seat element failed 3 times

3) AC condenser cracked

4) AC seat blower motor shorted out 4 times

5) Burns over a quart of oil every 4,000 miles

6) Navi screen has died

7) radiator leaking

8) numerous AFM issues

this is just to name a few of the bigger items. I am out of warranty now and deciding if I should trade up to a 2016 Sierra, get a 2015 F250/F350 SuperDuty SRW CCSB or cross my fingers that the issues have stopped as I cant afford to keep replacing these things out of warranty.

    • Hello hello looking forward to expanding my knowledge of the 2026 2500 HD that I just bought.   Truck has 3500 miles on it four-wheel-drive crew cab and I’m about to put a 6 1/2 inch BDS lift on it 18 x 10 -25 offset with 37’s   Already have the wheels and tires just waiting on the lift install in about three weeks   Question what surprises am I not gonna be happy with?  I’m not new to lifted trucks so I know that acceleration towing gas mileage all that is affected..   Question is those of you that have this truck this powertrain with a 10 speed Allison and have done the mods that I’m doing,,, how bad is it? Is that Allison constantly gonna be hunting for the right gear to go into? And what about towing, acceleration, fuel consumption as mentioned?    Lastly how come I can’t find any ring pinion gear set up for these axles and when could I expect to see them?   I apologize if there’s any typos I’m doing speech to text on my iPhone.
    • I've got a 2013 2500 6.0L Flexfuel. Drove the truck earlier today with no issues. Went to run an errand tonight and noticed key fob wouldn't work. Figured battery was dead, so replaced fob batter. Still wasn't working. Grabbed my other set of keys with the other fob and that one wasn't working either. So I manually unlock truck and insert key. Interior lights come on, dashboard lights up, turn key and truck starts. Turn truck off, like a moron, and try starting again. This time no crank, no click, no nothing. Lights still come on and dash lights up, but now I'm getting a service 4wheel drive, service tire monitor, etc. Check voltage on battery and Im showing 12.2v. Throw my battery charger on it and give it 15 mins and try starting again. But still no crank no start. Decide maybe its a bad battery, run to autozone grab a new one and put it in. Same issue. Disconnect battery and let it sit for 15 mins. Try again and still nothing. I had managed to roll the windows down earlier as its a humid night, but now I can't get them to roll up. Power locks are also not working now. Then randomly I try the key again, and it fires right up. Immediately I roll up the windows as we have nothing but rain forecast this week. I shut it back off wait 30 seconds and start up again. Worked a 2nd time. So turn it off, start putting things back together. Try one more time, and back to no crank no start. And now the car alarm starts going off. Had to disconnect battery and leave it that way for the night as I don't think my neighbors would appreciate my alarm going off again tonight. Any thoughts or help would be appreciated.
    • No one will care for you like you care for you. Do what you can for as long as you can. IMHO of course.

    • Hi there.  Long time lurker, first post.    i have read the previous posts regarding the water ingress problem with this emblem.  I bought my 1500 SLT the  summer of 2025 new and after reading the MANY problems with these emblems failing I decided to install one anyways.  As per a YouTube video, I sealed ( or tried to) this sign with silicone sealant around the outer perimeter joint and the holes that were already somewhat sealed on the rear plate of the emblem.  And installed the connector assembly using dielectric grease on the connectors. The installation looked great and worked well for about 4 months……then FAILURE.  Grrrrrr…… I live in the great white north and wash my truck weekly in an automatic car wash  to keep the salt off.  Let me tell you that removing the old, failed emblem is a whole different animal than removing the OEM individual letters without removing the grill assembly. Mainly because the illuminated logo is built differently than the original letters which  you can remove the red surface lettering with a knife or some kind of blade which gives access to the tabs which hold the logo onto the grill. So I had to essentially destroyed the old emblem to remove it. Doing so killed my chance of doing somekind of autopsy on the failed , old logo.  But there was plenty of water inside when I ripped it apart.  Prior to installing the new assembly I tried it with the old harness and it works fine.   Does anyone have any insight as to where the water is getting into this emblem? I intend to seal the new logo with slow curing epoxy this time around using a syringe.  I think this newer emblem may be an updated unit which I hope GM got the vendor to fix. It has an October 2025 date on it.    If this one  fails,  I am just going to revert back to the non-illuminated letters….AFTER PULLING THE GRILL.    Any thoughts on sealing with epoxy would be appreciated. Thx!   Doug
