In most states there is no such thing as diminished value for first party (contractual) claims.

In Third party claims (someone else is legally liable for your damages) there is some ability to claim DV.

Heard back on supplemental damage assessment from PDR. New assessment totals:

Silverado. - $4K

Traverse. -$6K

So just about double from the original estimate...

Had this happen to me with my reg cab truck. Have owned it 3 years and have had hail damage 3 times. 2 times minor damage fixed with paintless, the other time $12,000 damage. Most of that fix was by way of re-skinning the roof and box side. What hurt the most was that the truck was only a month old.

PS: Also had $25,000 damage to my house in that bad storm.

Wife had roof replaced. Mine was assessed as needing roof replacement but ended up getting PDR.

On that note: Another line of storms came through tonight! These are not my photos as we got in our rentals and drove south this time (about 5 miles). But from folks around our neighborhood (within 5 miles) had this size hail.

Parked in a parking garage and didn't want to deal with another insurance claim this go around.

Should have my truck Monday and wife's traverse Wednesday.

I'm more amazed with the hood. The roof is flimsy to begin with I figured that could be pushed back with removing the headliner. But the aluminum hood stretches so easy I figured it was a goner. Also it looks like you guys really need a garage in your area.

We have a 2 car garage but they don't fit. The previous owner has built ins toward the front of the garage. Just another project to add and see if it can be removed to accommodate. We also have the center post which limits the entry into the garage.

Was the roof on your house hit with hail that big?

10-15 years ago had a new 6 month old sportcar get hit in a hail storm in Atlanta, I bet there was close to 75 hits or more on that thing. I told them I guarantee I would know where it was hit, but after the PDR guy was done I couldn't see a thing. Since then I use PDR guys regularly, I've had a huge dent taken

out of a truck where I backed into my kids bike and I've had a few done on my Sierra, I usually buy slightly used now and first thing I do is call someone out

to go over anything I see...each time I'm amazed. As long as it's not creased they can get it out, the sheet metal is so thin on these things now almost anything is possible except bad creases and even then they can make it look a lot better.

I had to replace my roof after it got hit with hail much smaller than that. Have you had your roof inspected?

Yep. Original estimate was $2500, 2nd assessment was 2x that. Both vehicles had roof replacement on the assessment but was told they could PDR. We'll find out Monday or Tuesday.

Sorry, I meant the roof on your house. Golf ball size hail will usually do quite a bit of damage to a composition shingle roof.

And that's when the storm chasers/hail roofers will come in and sell some residential insurance work [emoji6]

Let me know if your building is commercial and I can be of service.

    • Yes, and also pulling heavy trailers or a large camper up steep grades as well as descending grades such as the more rustic off road camping locations and using engine braking with that low gearing as well as soft ground can just suck the power . I realize pickups these days tend to have an over all lower first gear ratio compared to automatic transmission pickups from years back so that has helped a lot in its ability in high range but there comes a point if in four wheel drive the torque runs out at the wheels, certainly with a gas engine. They don't put two speed transfer cases on pickups for a cool factor, they have a function if one needs that massive torque to the wheels that high range can't deliver.
    • Notes 7/18/2026   3,400 miles on this batch of Mobil 1 Euro 5W40 since the GDI pump replacement. Alcohol runs very clean when ring seal is tight and the sump isn't getting hosed with fuel. Checked oil level at fill up today as is my practice and grabbed a white Kleenex to look at the color. What color?  I was going to change it but.....
    • 4 low is really nice on steep boat ramps.
    • Interesting, I suspect I would have fueled up in Lee Vining as the day prior I would have filled up either in Laughlin or near there and maybe again before I entered Death Valley and once out the other side late that evening as I kept on driving into the night up near Lee Vining. Next morning I most likely fueled up in LV before heading over Tioga Pass into ( as I refer to it as "Yose .... Mite" 😁 ). And again that was 19 years ago but the price then must not have jumped out at me like the 5 bill a gallon theme of nutty cult hippy country Big Sir or head so far up their rear Aspen. I'd be curious to know where the highest prices are in the lower 48, I probably would not be far off to guess somewhere in Cali forn ie. Coldfoot and Prudhoe bay may have those prices beat but that is a whole other world up there and when prices are more normal elsewhere that is about what they can be up there I believe in no mans land. Anyway interesting that the 395 corridor is hosing people and the thing is, its tourist season and its not like there are a lot of competition options when driving up that highway from what I could see. Yup, big ole Boaterhomes and various other RV's ahead and behind me at the Yosemite entrance gate and they have to get their fuel somewhere.
    • Those can be high, as well as the big California cities. The ones that will pop your eyes out are the 395 corridor on the Eastern side of the Sierra Nevadas. Lee Vining, $7.19 for regular and $8.89 for diesel is what the Google said right now.
