Fluids Change ?

2005 1500 5.3 L 124k had truck since 70k and figure its time to change the fluids in the front and rear diff, and also transfer case. what brand oil is good to use? is it ok to use 75w-90 in both differentials? front calls for 80w-90 and rear is 75w-90. For rear should replace the gasket or reuse old one? The cover is getting rusty should sand blast it and paint it or buy a new cover for it? For transfer case it calls for Auto Track 2, why does newer gm's call for ATF? use auto track or ATF?

It's never to late but late you are IMO.

Any brand oil is OK.

Put 75w90 in the front. GM had a bulletin a time ago when those were new for cold weather operation concerns. Called for changing the front diff fluid to 75w90.

what millage should it be changed at?

Most of us fall under the "severe service" maintenance schedule in the owners manual.

 

I'm not sure there is a scheduled change for the differentials, but the transfercase is something like every 50k?

As stated above you can use 75w-90 in front, no problem. The transfer case is Auto TrakII or AMSOIL's ATF fluid will work. It takes 2qts.

 

If you have the time, sand blast the rear cover, wash it really well and install with a new gasket. Just make sure you cover up the open rear diff so nothing can get in, even if it is inside a garage. Better safe than sorry.

only a 1/4 of a quart came out of the transfer case, it hods 2. some how 1 quart must have leaked out some time. Have not checked the fluid level on it in a while

Seems like I researched this, last winter, & the consensus was to stay with the 80-90 non-synthetic, due to leakage issues with the synthetic.

 

Must have miss-read something.

Conventional 80w90 is perfectly fine for a front differential that sees limited use...a lot of cars and trucks out there with loads of miles on 80w90 that never got changed.

Thanks for the info.

 

Even with the 80-90, differential still leaks on driver's side. Seems like most experience the same thing. Wish there was a fix.

I have run synthetic in my front and rear differentials for decades in numerous GM trucks and cars and NEVER had any leaks. Lots of misinformation about synthetics and they get blamed for poor gaskets and shoddy workmanship.
