Checking DTC without scanner

Is there a way to check to see if there are any codes on our trucks without a scanner?

I know the ford's superduty can, had a Cadillac that could, all by pressing a series of buttons.

Been searching for awhile and can't seem to find a way

Was towing boat up to the cabin this weekend and 5 times while on smooth level ground, the trans would appear to pop out of gear, rpm would jump to 5000 then calm down to where it was, as if nothing happened. All without cruise on...

Can get a Bluetooth dlc connector and use an app to read codes. Got mine on amazon for 8-bucks.

I know obd1 can do this via flashing CEL code, never heard of being able to do it with obd2

That being said, there's not much of a reason to do that when its so easy and cheap to use and buy a scanner

understood, but being up in the north woods, was hoping for a quick check without having to run out and buy something. Since other OBDII cars have the capability, figured ours did as well.

IF you subscribe to OnStar, press the blue button on the review mirror, tell them your truck is acting funny, and ask them to do a remote diagnostic. They can tell you any trouble code numbers. It's free.

I did check the trans fluid and it does not smell burnt, level is fine. I am burning lots of oil and in the process of an oil consumption test with the dealership

Have you monitored your trans temp via dash?

My truck had a blocked trans thermostat, so it was not allowing flow to the trans cooler.

Maybe nothing..try to duplicate the run without the load..even though a static weight, level ground and steady gas pedal doesn't mean that is what the ECU and tranny controller want to see. Could be something as stupid as sensor triggering an obscure emission related code in their algorithm reading it was producing increased emissions for too long a period, the timing was operating at a steady level for too long that would increase engine temp, or some some other condition that pi$$ed it off and called for a forced downshift to increase flow too cool off or reduce load on the convertors or some other reason based on a sensor input feeding some lines of code buried in the controller.

If it revved to 5K without downshifting and there was no significant increase in speed, tranny slippage is a concern, but if it revved and downshifted to a lower gear even without an increase in speed could be perfectly normal to temporarily reduce stress on the drivetrain. Don't always expect the thing to do what might appear logical, might be coded using Popeye's logic: "That's all I can stands 'cause I can't stands no more!" and the damn thing will downshift in a turn or say screw this I'm tired of this constant load, temporarily shifting to a lower gear.
