Let's start a 2WD thread

This is all in good fun. I lived in northern Canada for several years many miles from paved roads. I managed there with 2wd pickups, chains and some common sense. I now live on the southern west coast of Canada and have owned 4 wd pickups for several years. It is an option I value more than increased horsepower or a higher trim level. Which, of course, leads to a need vs want discussion...

No. Lot's of people do. He limited the thread to dirt busters. That kicks me to the curb pronto. Dirt? I never touch the stuff. Grand Touring and I'm in.

This is a great analogy to the topic at hand; however, it is clearly established on this forum that if you need to use 4wd, or any other identified nanny device you are an over compensating moron, suffer from penis envy, a nuisance to the road, a danger to those around you and not worthy of being on the same streets of the experts who troll these boards. Turn in your man card you 4wd using ninny!

 

A 4x4 may help with snow, but not with a snowflake.

 

A 4x4 is like concealed carry......you have it, no one sees it, and chances are you may not have to use it, but that once you may need it, it can be the difference that saves the life of you or yours. I also have the trailer brake controller, adjustable pedals, grade descent control, etc even though I have yet to use them, but that once that you may need them.......

We don't get much snow in northeast NC. Seem to only get 1 maybe 2 snows per Winter that's good enough to where you'd want 4x4. But, being in this part of the US we also get a lot of ice because usually the temps don't stay below freezing during the day. So more times than not, it will snow and then melt during the day and then freeze back into ice during the night. 4x4 really helps on ice. I remember I tried to pull into my driveway (is slightly uphill but not bad at all) in 2wd and all it did was spin. Put it in 4hi and it went up it like it was dry. So to me it's useful even if I don't take it off-road. That's also another reason where any truck I get even as a daily driver will be 4x4. If I ever have another 2wd truck it will be because it's a drag truck or in general a sport truck that's slightly lowered and is a toy. Even if I only use 4x4 once a year that's good enough for me and is worth it.

 

I don't think it's stupid if you have a 2wd, I could care less. My first truck was a 2wd manual trans and after getting a 4x4 after that I'll always have at least 1 4x4 truck. I'm certainly not against 2wd, it's just not useful for me unless it's a play truck to race with. The only reason I went back and forth with that guy is because his reason didn't make sense. He said because it's less parts that will break, yet he has a '17 which is all electronics and features that can break easier than any major part of a 4x4 system. So in my mind if you really want something that has less to break is to have a truck that's pre computer like the '83 K10 I recently bought. I never had a problem with the 4x4 system in my '98 which I had from '04 to '14 from the transfer case to the front axle and half shafts. Only part I had to replace was the push button switch in the dash which took 5 minutes to replace. Just my opinion though and I'm sure I'm still wrong.

I agree with you. 2wd and a 5.3 is more then enough for me.

Back to the topic, I love both of my 2wd trucks.

 

I did have trouble once pulling the 28ft boat out of a sugar sand storage facility. The 2wd Sierra didn't have enough traction to yank it out from where it had settled which was near the axles. So I hooked the Silverado to the tow hook on the front of the Sierra, had the wife drive the Silverado. Nothing like 640Hp and 708 lb-ft of torque, 4WD and 4 wheel steering to get something moving!!!!!

 

When you Z-71 guys can top those number let me know....

Nothing wrong with that Nick. We might be outnumbered, but we enjoy our trucks just as much as the 4x4 guys.

IMO, if you don't need 4wd, 2wd is the way to go. No reason not to enjoy your truck, its basically the same truck.

Just noticing some things after the level, it's definitely a positive change. Ride is exactly the same as factory and the biggest difference actually is the view from inside the cab; definitely feels like you're up higher when inside. But to make the post relevant to the thread, the increased ground clearance I've already taken advantage of, with positive results, 3 times today. Will probably actually go offroading later this afternoon at my usual spot. My 2WD benefitted from the change.
