When to use Flex fuel/E85?

you can’t just throw it in. You need to convert your truck to accept it, but its incredibly easy compared to other vehicles

 

I personally would wait for about 20k miles to make sure you don’t have something defective in your drivetrain.

It really doesn't make sense to me, when you spend money to get shitty fuel Milage

That's the whole point of this thread.  At a certain price point, E85 cost less per mile driven.

 

Just like you can get more miles per gallon out of a gallon of diesel fuel, but it doesn't cost the same as a gallon of gasoline.

But if you to tune for flex it's not worth the savings imo

Some of us aren't tuning to run it, I have a flex-fuel vehicle to start with...and what I found is the mileage difference in a 2500hd with the 6.0l isn't as drastic as some make it out to be...so far, including tonight's fill up, 93 is around 14 and flex-fuel is around 12mpg. I dropped almost that much changing from street tires to snow tires...

Not true.

It burns cleaner.  On my vehicles the black soot around the tail pipe is gone.

Higher octane=increase timing=better performance.

Sounds about right.  I get similar with E85 in my 2015 2500 6.0.

Do you notice more water in the catch can than combustion products? I have a similar can as you have on your truck, an all aluminum conceptual polymer?

I typically get the "chocolate milkshake this time of year, but when I drained after running nothing but flex fuel, I got almost all water with very little else.

There’s another point to using flex fuel that’s a value to performance enthusiasts. In the 14 and up yellow caped 5.3s it adds 25HP. That’s worth something to more than a few people. My truck ran better on it. I was able to get it cheaper than reg gas. I always put hand held tunes in my trucks, in this case I didn’t tune the engine just the transmission. I was thrilled to be able to switch to reg gas on trips. Best of both worlds.

My situation didn't allow me to get flex fuel reliably on my trips, being able to use any pump gas was a benefit.

Yeah, I noticed more water in the CP can also in cold weather. Same. On my previous 2013 1500 5.3.

Agree...but the 6.2 in the 2017 Yukon Denali is not designated Flex Fuel.
