F150 calling?

Get a Ford and don't look back.  The only reason I own a GM truck currently is because it's an HD and it stands up well where i work.  I drove a bunch of ecoboost 10 speed Ford's (as well as the 2.7 which I found very impressive) and only decided against it because they are just a half ton.  This GM was cheaper than a 6.2 Super Duty and I know the old L96 and 6L90e (owned before) are solid so it worked well when I found this truck and got a good deal. 

 

I am dumping my 2014 Impala.. it's a piece of shit that eats antifreeze and is falling apart with 40000 miles on it so off it goes.  I won't replace it right away but if I do it might be a half ton truck... which will be an F150.  Already owned Ram (no more), GM half tons (no more), Tundra(was a pile of junk) and Nissan(if they did a more powerful gas V8 I would try one again).  Had a couple F150s but they were both 6.2 trucks and I liked them...no problems.  

 

It's a GM forum.. if you are serious you don't ask..  Just do It!

I believe op is right in asking.  We all have reasons for choosing a particular brand and its good to hear others' opinions.  I believe the comments so far support him no matter which brand he chooses.  The point I wish to stress is not to give up on a brand because of a lemon.  They will be found in all brands!

I guess in part I was ruined by my Honda Ridgeline. I drove it for 9 long years, and I only had one trip to the dealer for a leaking hose. That's it. I would have bought another one had they not murdered the re-design. I went with the Chevy because it had the bang for the buck in terms of trim level and features.

what ever you do don't go with a Nissan, had a rental on last week 2018 with 640 miles thing had more rattles than a baby rattler, and the trim was terrible, thing wouldn't pull a greasy string out of a cats a**

Yeah, I second that it has a chinzy bolted together bed?  The oil filter is conveniently placed right out in front under the engine and is the size of my "nutsack"  No joke!  My ball sack is tiny and this thing is tiny?  I was also told on this forum that has little to do with anything....Really, Same thing for the Caterpillar equipment and every diesel engine on a truck I have changed?  Smaller is no problem for a truck! Same thing with the ladies.... Good Luck!

I guess I'm a lucky one, I have been to the dealer I think 3 times in 3 years and two were for scheduled oil changes that ended up including some recall work. Though my truck is a double cab made in America while the few here look like crew cabs which are made in Mexico.

So the other day I asked my dad about his 2016 1500 and he said it has been trouble free. Today he texted me that his truck threw an engine light and just shut itself off while he was driving on the expressway. That could have caused hi. To wreck and die. Not cool. His truck has less than 20k miles. Of course now he says I jinxed him.

Well, just an update. Decided to keep the truck. Worked with my service manager and Chevy Customer Care. I won't say what they did, but given the number of problems with my truck, they definitely made it worth my while. I was honestly impressed with my service manager as he went to bat for me and came through. Cheers.

Great news!  GM has always been better to the Customer than FERD by a long shot!  These scenario's don't happen over at FERD....

so coming from a 2015 F150 and a 2017 F150 , we shall call them Lemon 1 and Lemon 2... I can tell you to not answer this call.

Lemon 1 was at the dealer for 77 days in the first 7 months for water leaks in the cab of the truck, Parts were replaced, over and over and over with no luck in fixing the leak.

Lemon 2 was in the shop for 25 days int he first 8 months, mainly again for the water leaks , but also the 2.7 was "smoking" at startup after it had 5,000 miles on it and it was looking like it was going to need new heads and turbos.  

I never owned a truck prior to the fords, I had driven Nissan xterra  for 9 years and prior to that was another Nissan Xterra for 3...

I looked at the new Nissan, and while they are unproven on the redesign I nearly purchased one


I test drove the tundra and left the dealer after getting in a argument with the "truck specialist"  over payload capacity... it had 2 stickers 1 was factory ( 1310 lbs) and 1 was dealer add on( saying payload decreased by 90 lbs) so I was like 1310-90 = 1220 and I would be over payload with my camper and kids... he wanted to use the website that shows max available of 1600... ah no sticker on the truck is what it is not some spec on a website.

 

Dodge was looked at and quickly dismissed when the knob for the transmission showed and error on the test drive...

 

That left me with GMC and Chevy... I  like Chevy headlights better than the GMC but I didnt like the agressive hood/ rims that came on the chevy so alas I now have a 2017 GMC SLT

I lemon Lawed the 2015 and got the 2017 thinking it was a fluke, the second time around I got my money back... all but $500, went to the GMC dealer and used everything i got plus 1500 to get my new truck out the door

If you are switching to the darkside, I would stay as farrrrrrr away from the "ecoboost" as humanly possible. Even though the 5L is a sports car engine, and in turn a very poor choice of a V8 for a truck, it still wont warp heads and kill turbochargers. Coworker is on turbo # 5 and 6 now on his 2013, warped head, skipped timing chain etc. Nightmare engine, piss poor economy under light load. Ford does make a beautiful truck though, in and out, always quality. I just can't come to terms with their powertrains, or thought process on engines.

A guy at works has a 2016 F-150. It's always in the shop. Doors get frozen shut in the winter, truck wont lock with the key fob, wipers go off whenever, and they chipped the paint off both doors while in the shop. A few other things that I can't remember, stay away from Fords...

    • It is working as designed.  NHT and non NHT trucks have the same exact transmission cooling setup.  NHT just gets a larger radiator.     The transmission cooler loop on these is as follows.     -Transmission out goes into an oil to water heat exchanger (item #1 in the first illustration below).  This exchanger has engine coolant opposite the transmission fluid and uses engine coolant to warm and then regulate the transmission fluid temperature when its in the operating window.   - From the cooler it goes to a thermal bypass valve (item #11 in the 2nd illustration below).  If the ATF has not reached the temp to open the bypass (194F), it loops back.   - When it reaches 194F, the thermostat opens and ATF then flows out to the oil to air auxiliary cooler (item #17 in the 2nd illustration) at the front of the truck.  From there it goes back to the transmission.     Your only fix would be to swap for the PPE thermal bypass delete block which will open the loop to the aux cooler all the time.  It will STILL run warm, probably 170-200F, but that's as low as you'll get it as its still flowing through the oil to water exchanger.      
    • Most say the oil temperature needs to above the boiling point of water to rid it of moisture and long enough to dry it. Many think that is about a hour at 212 F or more. Those people have never line dried cloths in a Midwest winter. Leave a pan of water sitting on the counter and eventually it all evaporates. So heat drives the time it takes. Water in oil under 175 F, the Nitration initiation temperature, is a minimum then for temperature and samples I've done that use Karl Fisher method say about a hour (in a healthy well tuned motor) over 175 F will dry it to under 800 ppm. Low enough to not be much of a factor. Motors with weak rings will take longer and the colder the air temperature the longer it takes.   On a cold motor there is also the condensation temperature. Blowby gases that contain moisture are subject to that cold cylinder wall, like sweat on a glass of ice tea. But also subject to the Law of Partial Pressures. Wear studies by GM and the DOD  indicate wear is a real issue below 85 F and a concern to 140 F but doesn't become a minimal factor until about 160 F. You know this intuitively when you see water vapor exit the exhaust pipe until the system gets above the dew point. It isn't magic, it's physics and it fascinates me. I know you didn't ask but....I over share sometimes. 😉    You keep the Camaro's high and tight.  
    • Move further away.   Benefit of living out - none of our cars get short cycled, plenty of warm up time.   Curious how much time/temperature it takes to drive moisture/condensation out of the engine?
    • Switch a a 100% synthetic trans fluid, Amsoil works for me.
    • First of all sorry, I know there are a ton of transmission temperature threads...   My truck is a 2025 LZ0 High (10l89 10-speed) High Country with NHT max trailering package. The NHT package is supposed to have "enhanced cooling."   Normally the trans temp sits around 200. It seems like with any real stress it quickly jumps into the 220s (for example climbing a grade unloaded at lower speeds). I haven't towed much with this truck, but I'm concerned if it gets this hot unloaded.    I've tried a few different things to keep the temps down (tow/haul mode, sport mode, low range when that makes sense) and nothing seems to affect it.    I'm curious if others are the same behavior or if anyone has found techniques to keep the temps down. It seems like it just can't handle reduced airflow at lower speeds, even with relatively light loading.    Thanks!
