Running A Tuner on a '98

Recommended Posts

Has anyone ever ran a tuner with one of these trucks?  I wouldn't mind the little bit of extra power for towing and a couple more MPG while cruising either.  Not sure how well it would work or if it would be worth it at all.  Any insight would be nice.

If you are looking for mpg a tuneup, plugs, wires cap rotor and new o2 sensors are best bet. If your truck has over 150k and still has stock Catalitic converters then replace them as they are probably clogged.

I put a flow master high flow cat kit on my 350 with 4 new o2 sensors. Felt a noticeable difference. Then had computer mail order tuned by blackbear performance. Felt a big difference. Removed all torque management and firmed up trans shifts. Definitely recommend. And my 350 and 4l60e have 210k lol

Here’s the high flow cat system with larger diameter pipe and better flowing bends than the restrictive stock design. Of course double check vehicle fitament.

97 k1500 with 210k and original 350 5.7 and 4l60e. Everything’s stock except

shorty headers with egr (summit racing)

flowmaster performance high flow cats and larger diameter front pipe 2010023

flowmaster muffler with dual tail pipes

ac Delco cap rotor plugs, Bosch wires, Bosch o2 sensors (rock Auto)

still running original mechanical spider injection SFI. No issues (chevron gas)?

Blackbear performance tune

Ebay k2xx tow mirrors with turn signals, running lights and rear clearance lights

blazer / Astro van trip computer mod (avg / instant Mpg, gallons used, etc)

gmt800 dual display mirror outside temp / compass

if you are into that stuff, have gadget  to read live data.

some things do not trigger codes.. you'll sit there wondering until monitoring.

I fond a map sensor reading something not in this universe. pegged timing right off idle.

never nticed it. Found it by chance.

I have seen in graph there is 3 tiers for these spider computers.

there is a top one.. that is what those tuners grab. Don't pay too much.

I am guessing the bottom is 4.3L, shortbed real light gmt400.

xcab has the middle. Run of the average.

my own truck is significantly faster than factory, does more than sound the vortec woof and growl.. it is quick.

I went with new o2 and high flow cat and flow master.

I do my own welding, so I picked and chose what I wanted.

No codes triggered.

do not forget equal length plug wires...and iridiums.

another thing a tuner can grab is speed limiter.

and for some reason my truck pegs 40 degrees total timing. I learned elsewhere most are 35.

Hello Logan, not sure if you reached out to us about tuning, but we have three different options for tuning a 98. As Terrell mentioned, we can tune the computer and send it to you, . We can tune based off the datalog you do with our Scan Cable, or we can do it all via email with our AutoCal. Email us sal[email protected], we would be happy to help. Thanks
