Park brake

I have a 2004 GMC Sierra, regular cab, short box, V-6, 5 speed, 2wd, 154,000 miles.  I replaced the park brake shoes when I did the rear pads, but the pedal still goes to the floor, with no holding.  The nut on the stud/cable at the "Y" is all the way up.  Am I missing another location for an adjustment?

Is the cable attached to the pedal inside the truck? I’d make sure all the hardware for the shoes is installed correctly.

You can cheat and shim that nut up with another larger nut, and a few washers - will give you an extra 1/4" to 1/2" of adjustment, depending on how thick the nut you use is.

 

I'd check everything out first - shouldn't be that loose with new parts ...

There is a small star wheel inside that pushes the shoe out a little.  I did each side about 3/16" and then readjusted the cable at the 'y'. 

I've been retired too long.

Ahh, I assumed you'd already done that, since you were in there. Guess it's true what they say about assumptions ...

We're supposed to use a giant caliper and measure the inside diameter of the hat and adjust the shoes so they are .6604mm less in size.

I just adjust them until there's a very slight drag, then go up the road at about 40 and apply the brake a few times for a couple seconds at a time. Seems to work pretty good.

I thought the difference in material on the shoe would take up the 'slack'.   {Assume}  So, I ignored the star wheel at first.  I adjusted them to get a slight drag, then adjusted the cable accordingly.  Ta da.
