Air compressor in spare battery tray?

Recommended Posts

Really a 2 part question. I take my truck to the beach a lot during the summer so a lot of airing down and up. Most of the beaches have compressors available but some don't. I've currently got some dinky $30 compressor from Autozone that takes 40 min to fill my tires back up.

So question 1: what's a good compressor to get? I've been looking at the ARB ones but would rather not spend $250+ if I can help it.

Question 2: would it be possible to mount it on the spare battery tray?

I have always run the ARB on-board Twin compressor on my 4Runners and IMHO they simply can't be beat.  They will air up all 4 of my 35s from 12 to 35psi in minutes......precious time when your worn from a long day of wheeling.  Once I take the time to have my custom mount guy (Leroy aka Bandiworld) to make me a spare battery tray mount for this new rig, I'll be installing one here as well.

This came today. Am hoping to install it tomorrow morning but it's supposed to rain, so probably Friday. Getting my KO2's on Friday as well so when everything ready I'll be hitting the sand. Will update with pics and install

Let me preface this with saying I am as mechanically inclined as a gorilla, if you have an easier way to do this please let me know. The first thing I did was a very scientific test consisting of driving in the rain and through puddles to make sure the tray stays dry. It does.

This is part 1: mounting the compressor

Step 1. Remove battery tray. More of a pain in the ass than I expected. You'll have to also remove the 2 bolts that are holding down the fuse box, and the clip holding the plastic wire guide so you can maneuver the tray out. cf87325d8c79c40a587475c923ca682d.jpg

Step 2. Drill your holes in the battery tray. I marked them and then used a 1/4" bit and then mount the compressor (Tip: I discovered by accident after the fact you can easily remove the compressor body from the bracket. Would have made mounting it much easier) I also rotated the compressor body so the Air chuck will be pointing up.

Step 3: reinstall the battery tray. Much easier than removing it.

Step 4: wiring. I have stuff I have to do so this won't get done today. Also I ordered a switch bracket because I don't want to cut into my dash for this so have to think of where I want to mount it. I'm thinking of just putting it on the fender wall next to my HID ballast. Also, this compressor comes compressor only. The pieces you need to connect an air hose are sold separately and I won't have mine til Wednesday so I'll finish everything up then.

Forgot this pic for drilling the holes. I put the bracket the only spot where all 4 holes laid flat. It's also convenient because it lets you rotate the compressor body so the Air chuck will point up instead of to the side. cfbb45b36b0af1a3dc6cd8fc0e446abe.jpg

Nice work....maybe I won't have to wait on that custom mount after all like I had to on my 4Runner.  May try direct mounting my ARB Dual tank compressor direct to the spare battery tray.

PS for your wiring:  I've always ran the SPod system with great results.  Compressor is powered direct to battery but power (on/off) controlled by the SPod system from in-cab switching.  I'll probably go this route in this truck as well when adding my compressor ( http://www.4x4spod.com/product_p/700-mod.htm )

Finished it up. Will probably clean up the wiring at a later date but I'll probably forget and get lazy. I kept the switch under the hood cause I'm not ready to start cutting my interior lol. The only downside to that is instead of it being connected to an ignition source it just directly wired to the battery, so it can run with the truck off if I ever forget or accidentally hit it and drain the battery, but I don't really foresee that happening given how obvious it is when it's on. After I lift her and get some light bars I'll look into an s-pod or some custom interior switches and redo the whole thing.

That's a great location for the compressor.  Do you know the specs on the ARB?  I'm sure it's a pretty penny to buy;  I was looking at this one:  https://www.amazon.com/VIAIR-85P-Portable-Air-Compressor/dp/B0036E9VB6/ref=dp_ob_title_auto

...but I think it's a good bit bigger and not sure up to snuff.  It is rated for 1.26 cfm, which I think is slightly more than gramma huffing around her oxygen equipment when she loses again at the casinos....

Ha, just looked up your ARB, says it'll air up a 35" tire in around 2 minutes.  That might just be a teeeenie bit mo better than the one I was looking at!

I have 275/55/20 (stock size) d range KO2's and it goes from 20psi to 50psi in about a minute. Roughly 10psi every 30 seconds. The only thing I don't like is that it gets HOT. Like when you're done and you take unhook the air hose, the male piece on the end of the hose will leave a burn mark if you touch it. I was actually a little nervous putting the hose into stowage right after use it was so hot.

I recently mounted an ARB twin compressor in our 2016 Sierra 1500 light service truck. It works really well for filling flat tires, spares. It’s my third one of these and none have had any Issues. ARB does offer a rebuild kit for something like $70 if you smoke one.

I mounted it to the second battery tray. This tray wasn’t set up for mounting a battery but a tray capable of battery mounting would bolt right in in-place. My plan was to mount the ARB to a plastic cutting board, shaped like a battery, then install the board like a battery. I was in a time crunch so I improvised when I figured out the tray had no hold-down spot. I shaped the cutting board to fit the tray. Mounted the ARB to the board. Next drilled the board/tray at the corners and tapped the tray holes to 1/4-20. Counter-sunk the corner board holes and installed the unit (ARB/Board) using tapered Allen head stainless screws.

I wired the switch signal to the S48A dash switch as in the “Aux switch install” on this forum and labeled it “Aux 1”. I ran a hose to the bed and plumbed in a Flexzilla 50’ hose reel.
