I was really interested in the advanced safety features, but there was no way I could find an equipped truck in my price range.

I personally think its a waste of money.  The low speed breaking might save you something but the rest of it seems to have little value.

What my manual says is not how my truck acts.  But what I have seems to be typical.

Well interesting enough was on a residential street and the system kicked in as a car swerved in front of me. I guess because of the rate of close, it was fairly in my face.

My experience with most car sales persons is I usually end up explaining to them how features on new cars work. A lot of people out there selling cars know very little about the product they are selling. sometime it is fun to play with them a little just to show them just how little that know about the car or truck they are trying to sell.

So the new Jeep Cherokee came out, and they fixed that juke looking front end. Went to a dealership to test drive one, asking what the difference is between a trailhawk and trailhawk elite were. They tried to tell us there was no such thing... Then I asked about the new turbo motor and was indirectly asked to leave...

There used to be a time when a car salesman knew the difference between DOHV vs pushrods. Now, they probably wouldn't know the difference between diesel and gas... Except one is green vs one is black.

I'm not sure they should be expected to know everything there is to know about everything they have to sell, but they might make an effort. What is particularly annoying is that most of them hand you a large, steaming pile of turtle shit rather than finding the correct answer for you.

I still think the dealers are untrained on this system as I have found everyone has a different opinion on how it works.  The part that concerns me is the Shop foreman worked on my truck all yesterday. He had GM "Engineering" on the phone off and on all day.

The manual says this.

Lane Departure Warning (LDW)

If equipped, LDW may help avoid unintentional lane departures at speeds of 56 km/h (35 mph) or greater. LDW uses a camera sensor to detect the lane markings. The LDW light, , is green if a lane marking is detected. If the vehicle departs the lane, the light will change to amber and flash. In addition, beeps will sound or the driver seat will pulse.

My truck does not do this.  The shop foreman told me yesterday based on his conversations with GM that after you zig back and forth so many times it would alert you.  I am not buying that.

This was the response from the dealer.

YES , I DROVE IT THIS MORNING AROUND 11:00 ISH AND FOUND THAT THE ALERTS FOR THE STEERING ASSIST DO COME ON. IT VIBRATED THE SEAT AND THE DASH HAD A WARNING COME ON, STATING TAKE CONTROL OF THE STEERING, BUT IT DOES TAKE SOMETIME FOR THEM TO ALERT THE DRIVER IF THERE HANDS ARE OFF THE

STEERING WHEEL,  I HAVE A VIDEO OF ME DRIVING IT AND IT TOOK 2 MINTUES THE FIRST TIME AND THE SECOND TIME WAS LESS THAN A MINTUE.

We have a 2013 GM Terrain and although it does not have lane keep assist, it does alert you properly if you cross the center line if your signal is not on.

I don't know all the details of how it is supposed to work but I can tell you that this 2018 with the enhanced driver alert system versus the 2017 with the system are a bit different.

1. The lane keep assist on the 17 would almost snatch the steering wheel out of your hand to put you back in your lane where this 18 is much more gentle.

2. The red led warning light system seems a bit slower to react but only slightly. One thing to keep in mind is it WILL NOT COME ON if you touch the brakes at all. A lot of people are confused by that.

3. At slower speeds if the red led light pops on the it feels like it is actually braking on this 18? not just boosting the brake pressure? That surprised me a bit.

I am only at 900 miles so not a lot of seat time yet in the 18 for a good comparison but that is what I noticed so far............

Actually brakes, accelerate, steer the truck  and turn signal will all disable it.

Mine will usually steer back but does not alert if it crosses the line.  So my lane keep assist seems to work. Its the lane departure warning that does not.

Pretty sure he told me they all work the same from 2016 on.  The 14s were different for sure.

Thanks for the info Darryl.

I always turn as much of that stuff off as possible. Just more things to take your attention away from driving. I do like the parking sensors though, they come in really handy.

In all honestly,  I probably will too.  But it does have some advantages for late night driving out on the road. So I would like the option to turn it on if needed.  Besides, it was a lot of money and GM makes a big deal out of it so I expect it to work.

Agreed. My 2018 has all of that on it too, and I can see if you drive a lot where it would be nice for it to work correctly.

My 2017 Denali Ultimate CCSB has all those features and when heading out of the lane it does not jerk the wheel at all.  Just gently nudges you back into the lane.  The only time you get the seat to vibrate is when you bounce from left to right with out grabbing the wheel.  The DIC say take control of the wheel.   I have had several times that the FCA saved me from a rear ended.  Mine flashes the red lights, seat vibrates, and slows you down with the brakes just enough for you to react and finish braking yourself if need be.   I have never tested it to see if it would actually being me to a complete stop though.  Not sure that is what this system is designed to do.   I haven't had the courage to actually try it with a real vehicle I  front of me.

Does yours ever fail and cross the center lane and not alert you? Once again, the manual says  If the vehicle departs the lane, the light will change to amber and flash. In addition, beeps will sound or the driver seat will pulse.

This is my main issue. That and I don't think my FCA works, but not sure how to test it beyond the inappropriate driving I have already done. LOL

I don't think I have ran across anyone that has it work like the GM video says.

    • Are you going to take long trips in it?  If so, try out the seats in the various trims. For me the lower trim level seats were not comfortable.
    • I have a 2016 that I bought new and still own. I'm around 129,000 miles now. The biggest problem was a transmission failure about 2 years ago around 95000 miles. No warning, just failed while driving down a back road. A reman GM transmission installed and it's been fine ever since. A few other minor problems along the way. I am in no hurry to replace it. It's been paid off long ago and do plan on driving this as long as I can.   I will admit I am leery about all the additional electronics in the newer models and feel that it is just more potential problems. I think there's actually more than I would have wanted in this 2016 but so far so good. I think even if something major like lifter failure happened, it would still be cheaper to at worst, drop a new engine in than buy a new vehicle.
    • I’ve own several successful businesses. I’ve bought homes and lived in different states. I’d witness several generations buy homes and survive in different economic circumstances. You get awful sippy when people have different experiences than you do. You live a life. I’ve lived a life. It seems our experience has been different. You can point out generalized statistics. Some people learn how to thrive when the odds are against them. Living in different states does make a difference in a persons quality of life and economic outcomes and opportunities. That’s a fact Jack. It’s my truth, my life. Hard work and long hours the right environment made my families life easier. And yes moving to a different state increased the odds of that happening. Stats are generalized. People who thrive don’t make excuses. They beat the odds. Others get mad and point to those statistics. I guess that’s you. My post pointed out how you helped people beat the odds. Somehow your panties got in a wad. Go figure.
    • Good question, I don't remember for sure but I believe it was the HD. I will check and get back to you.
