Opinions on towing?

... and anything beyond that could be a "spare" or "leeway" left by the engineers. For your safety in hairy situations.
If you stay within the ratings, your truck combined with your driving skills can handle these situations.
If you overload your truck, you lose that side of the equation and you depend solely on your abilities.

I have the same weight Montana fifth wheel  and until last Friday I was towing with a 2015 CCSB Duramax,  you could hardly tell it was back there, it had very little sag and with the engine brake stopping is not a problem.

Anyone that says "you can hardly tell it was back there" when pulling a 12,000lb trailer with a 2500 or 3500 SRW is completely full of crap!  Of course you can tell it's back there. 

I pull an 11,000 travel trailer with an 2016 2500HD Duramax and an 2017 2500HD 6.0.  On a flat, level well paved road neither truck accelerates, stops or rides like it does empty.  Not even freaking close.  You know full well "it's back there".

You are correct.  Your statement was opinion.  Mine, on the other hand, was fact.  Your trucks performance when pulling a 12k lb trailer is not even close to its performance when not pulling that load.  F-A-C-T!

Does that make you full of crap?  No.  I apologize.  It simply means you have a VERY broad definition of "hardly".

Yeah.  The 53' van trailer for my semi truck is about 13,000 lb empty.   Even empty, I know it is back there and feel it.  I find it hard to believe that the same weight trailer on a pickup truck, one can hardly tell  it is back there.

One thing to remember is if you plan on hauling or towing max limit weight is to make sure you have the proper tires to do so.  Just saying.

I think you are very close to the maximum capabilities of the 2500, but may be ok.  I am assuming that is the maximum weight/tongue weight of the trailer with maxed out CCC.  If thats the UVW, then your truck wont be enough.

I am not calling anyone out here, but to say I towed a 10k trailer on any 1500 or 2500 or 3500 with any engine with any gear ratio with any transmission and didnt even know it was back there is just ridiculous nonsense.  You and the truck are feeling this trailer.

I went ahead and got the trailer after and I’m happy  I stuck with the purchase. I’m actually very surprised how well it towed... in a few years I will no doubt buy the 3500 SRW just to have the added  ratings.

As far as the "argument" above - my 34ft. TT is about 8500# (yes, quite a bit less than 12k, but still heavy). I have a 2500HD 6.0 gasser. 

 

I would state that I "hardly" knew the trailer was there as a simple and "broad" statement. Yes, on the WV turnpike and Fancy Gap, the performance was not the same as a solo truck, but trailer tracked very well and I really didn't feel a huge difference in handling. The most surprising thing for me was that it really didn't weigh enough to induce Grade Braking. I had to hit brakes or downshift manually. 

 

After towing this trailer with a 1500 Sierra - saying you "hardly know it's there" is a very fair statement with the 2500 in comparison. Can we just be friends and drink some beer?
