Crew cab vs double cab

You need a crew cab if you have kids. Unless you can afford to trade in a few years as they grow. 

 

Double cab is lighter, more efficient, made in the USA, looks better, bigger standard box, cheaper overall cost, will work for small kids, but would be unlivable for people in the back on trips the room just isn't there. A dbl cab is essentially a 3 seater with storage, or able to take people on short runs. 

 

Crew is heavier and less efficient, made in Mexico, looks uglier, grocery getter bed standard, more expensive overall. 

 

With that said, it is a no-brainer to make the jump to a crew if you have a family in tow. My friend just took a huge loss on his 16 dbl cab because he just had his first kid and needed to go to a crew cab.

This is my 3rd DC truck in a row. In your case with growing kids, I would go CC for sure.

This is me... DC and in truck 99% of the time alone. Neighbor with kids has the crew cab with the short bed and loves it. I would have been fine with a single, but it is nice to have the room to be able to drive others if needed. Back seat is storage most of the time...

I settled for a 13 extended cab after a 3 day grind searching. Had less miles than all the cc and was a few years newer but I REGRET 100% not getting the crew cab. Get the crew cab! More room and they look way better than the double cabs. Something about the shorter doors with handles on them look dumb in my opinion. GM shoulda just kept the extended cab look with the handles on the inside of the doors.

As if it hasn’t been said enough already, definitely a crew cab. We have a 22 month old and a newborn on the way.  Our rear facing infant car seat nearly touches the back of the passenger seat in a crew cab.  If we had a double cab instead, the passenger seat would have to slide forward more to fit it. Plus the extra room gives you some distance from your kids kicking the back of the seat.

 

Dont worry about weight and fuel economy....the trucks are nearly identical. This decision should be based purely on room/space.

I went crew in 08 as I planned on road trips with my folks. It was a no brainer to go crew again in 16 with the arrival of our daughter.

Kids = Crew Cab  no matter what age. Even with the shorter box it is better for the most important cargo.  I only carry dogs and cargo so the DC works fine for me.

i do think they’re built for people like me who have no kids but don’t wanna pay 5-6k for a little extra room

 

i went from an older CC to a DC and there is no way I’d front an extra 5-6k for the little added space 

 

but to answer your question, with 2 kids the crew cab will give you time to grow into the truck

double cab is great for one kid with a rear facing car seat.

 

you put the car seat in the middle of the backseat. Unlike nearly every other regular car, the truck is so wide that the car seat can actually fit between the two front seats. I have a read facing seat in my double cab and I can also comfortably drive 4 adults and a baby.

 

If you have two kids, one will likely be foward facing. So it could potentionally work.

 

That being said, I still wish I had a crew cab. Just saying that a double cab can work.

Many of us baby boomers traded our regular cabs in for super or extended cabs when they first appeared.  They were a stretched 2 door cab with opposing jump seats or a narrow, flat "bench" seat.  Crew Cabs were available but they were marketed to work crews.  The extended cab went from 2-3-4 doors and recently the crew cab has been hailed as the family truckster. My kids have long since left the nest but even though I had decades of "double" and standard cabs, crewcabs are my favorite.   If space was a problem then DC would be my second choice. I've often thought a double cab with a short box would be an interesting option for GM to offer to urban customers.

If you're gonna spend $40k+ then spend it well.    Nothing worse than botching a major purchase, especially if it is (let's face it) a status symbol.

 

My 6-passenger leather crew cab gets compliments everywhere, and does everything.   No regrets, no apologies.

Long time reader, first time poster - I think the DC vs CC argument is a little silly.  When I was shopping, a CC was not on my radar.  I bought my truck to pull my camper and boat.  When we boat, the launch is a mile from my house.  Nobody complains about comfort when there's a boat ride involved, even my 6ft 3in son.  When we pull the camper, we always take two vehicles.  That was the case when I had my previous SUV as well.  We go camping for no less than a week at a time, and having a second vehicle is just practical for our family.

 

My truck is not a daily driver - the fact is, I actually use the bed of my truck more than I ever have passengers, so a DC was really what I was interested in, and that's what I bought.

Welcome to this forum!  This is not really an argument and it is interesting to hear differing opinions.   I think cost saving is the major factor currently in support of the DC.  Once (if) GM lowers the pricing gap,  I  think we'll see the market for the smaller cab become not practical to produce.

have a double cab, wish I spent the extra $ and got the crew with 6.5 bed... o well, live and learn.  I'm not about to lose 10-15k on this truck to get a new one.  

 

I've also heard that some "crew" have the famous shake, so in a way I'm glad I didn't get a crew.

But my other car (wife's car) that I drive is the new Subaru Ascent 8 passenger so.. I use my truck for what it is.. a Truck.  Haul stuff, pack stuff, drive it to work like it's just all mine.

It’s all personal preference... but I think the crew cabs look better with the bigger doors and windows.

More proportional I guess.
