Crew cab vs double cab

Recommended Posts

Hello all,

I am in the market for a pick up truck, I guess there is a big sales event in Canada to get rid of all the K2xx before T1 rolls out.

Double cabs have 0% 8 years finance and other benefits and Crew cabs also have good deals but finance is .99%. It seems like overall I need to spend 5-6,000 more dollars to purchase crew cab.

I would like to avoid buying crew cab all possible but, I do have two children.. One with front facing car seat and one with rear facing car seat.

I am not sure if double cab would fit car seats comfortably?

Are there anyone out there who bought double cab and regret not buying crew cab because of just a few thousand dollars?

It crew cab totally worthwhile over double cab if you have children?

Your advice would be greatly appreciated.

Regards,

My opinion with 2 in car seats, is a crew cab all the way..... Go to your local dealer and put the seats in both trucks and decide for yourself.

crew cab hands down. has much more room and when the kids get bigger it is so nice.

also gives you more room inside so you don't have to use the bed as much.

I have no kids, and %100 stand behind the crew cab. If you've ever had one, and you like a double cab, not sure what to tell you. The extra space is way worth it in my book.

* To add a note of regret.

I purchased a brand new doublecab. My wife and I couldn't stand it, and within a month traded it back for a used crew cab and even though I lost money, it was a learning experience I won't forget - I will never buy a double cab unless unforeseen circumstances.

This was a couple years ago, and now I'm back with a different crew cab again, but didn't for a second debate for a double cab.

I have the 2018 CC with an 8 y/o and a 2 month old. I love the room I have back there for them. I bought the CC specifically because we were having another kiddo and I didn't want to fight getting the seat in and out. I had an 07 classic extended cab before and it worked for my first but it was getting tight for her and with another on the way it was time for more room.

I recently went from a double cab to a crew cab, and I’ll never go back to a double. I had no idea how much more room the crew cab truly was.

i believe that double cabs will be a thing of the past in the next few years.

I have a kid in a rear facing seat and a kid in a front facing seat in my crew cab.

I'm a tall fellow, but I wish there was MORE legroom for them.  I have to slide my seat up further than I'd like to get the car seat in.

I have no experience with a modern double cab, but I know a front facing carseat barely fits in the backseat of my dad's 2005 Chevy extended cab.  :D

Rear facing seat still touched the back of my headrest in a crew cab. That was with the extra pad under it to alter the angle. I can't imagine putting rear facing kid seats in a double. Now if they are front facing and you don't mind them kicking your seat and getting all kinds of mud, crud, whatever on the back of your upholstery, then you can live with a double.

My last pick-up was a 1994 Ford Ranger extend cab so my 18, Z71 double cab is like a dance hall.  I chose the double cab because I needed something to tow a TT, I wanted the standard box and the shorter wheel base.  The kids are gone and just the dog rides in the back.

I'm a double cab guy all the way, but my kids are grown and I'm alone in the truck 99.9% of the time. I preferred the extra bed space.

This is my 3rd DC truck in a row. In your case with growing kids, I would go CC for sure.

Not even a question, crew cab 100%. Rear facing car seats take up a ridiculous amount of room. You have to move the front seat in a double cab way up on the dash to fit a rear facing car seat.

    • This is a really late reply but I just found this thread. They won't sell the hinges. I've gone 7 rounds with them. Their solution is to buy a new cover. I'm about to buy a new cover and it won't be a Bakflip. It also won't be from realtruck.com.
    • Yes, and also pulling heavy trailers or a large camper up steep grades as well as descending grades such as the more rustic off road camping locations and using engine braking with that low gearing as well as soft ground can just suck the power . I realize pickups these days tend to have an over all lower first gear ratio compared to automatic transmission pickups from years back so that has helped a lot in its ability in high range but there comes a point if in four wheel drive the torque runs out at the wheels, certainly with a gas engine. They don't put two speed transfer cases on pickups for a cool factor, they have a function if one needs that massive torque to the wheels that high range can't deliver.
    • Notes 7/18/2026   3,400 miles on this batch of Mobil 1 Euro 5W40 since the GDI pump replacement. Alcohol runs very clean when ring seal is tight and the sump isn't getting hosed with fuel. Checked oil level at fill up today as is my practice and grabbed a white Kleenex to look at the color. What color?  I was going to change it but.....
    • 4 low is really nice on steep boat ramps.
    • Interesting, I suspect I would have fueled up in Lee Vining as the day prior I would have filled up either in Laughlin or near there and maybe again before I entered Death Valley and once out the other side late that evening as I kept on driving into the night up near Lee Vining. Next morning I most likely fueled up in LV before heading over Tioga Pass into ( as I refer to it as "Yose .... Mite" 😁 ). And again that was 19 years ago but the price then must not have jumped out at me like the 5 bill a gallon theme of nutty cult hippy country Big Sir or head so far up their rear Aspen. I'd be curious to know where the highest prices are in the lower 48, I probably would not be far off to guess somewhere in Cali forn ie. Coldfoot and Prudhoe bay may have those prices beat but that is a whole other world up there and when prices are more normal elsewhere that is about what they can be up there I believe in no mans land. Anyway interesting that the 395 corridor is hosing people and the thing is, its tourist season and its not like there are a lot of competition options when driving up that highway from what I could see. Yup, big ole Boaterhomes and various other RV's ahead and behind me at the Yosemite entrance gate and they have to get their fuel somewhere.
